I would honestly do the same thing in your situation. There's not many places that are fenced in around us.. tennis courts, fields etc. One's that are, are locked. But now we have a fenced in yard so we don't have that worry.
We recently started going to low key undeveloped industrial parks (you could also go when buisnesses are closed), wrapping the dog's 30ft leads around our waste and just walking. Of course you could do a longer lead and play fetch etc. |

Allowing a dog off leash in public where there are leash laws is illegal and is similar to what people do when they drink and drive. I mean there is a law against it but some people think they are above the law. For example there is a leash law but my dog is perfectly trained, friendly and therefore that law does not apply to me or my perfect dog, which to me is the same as saying, I have had six shots of tequila but I can handle my alcohol and am fine to drive so no problem I'm OK to drive home.
Leash laws typically specify the length of leash that is maximum (rarely over 6') and also do not distinguish between aggressive dogs, small dogs, big dogs, nice dogs, trained dogs or unruly dogs. Most laws clearly state they apply to all dogs. Rationalizing why your dog should sometimes be allowed to be off leash on public property in violation of the law is arrogant and inconsiderate. The guy I mentioned who is paying of the judgement was within five feet of his dog when it grabbed the other dog. It did not take but a couple of seconds for his pit bull to inflict $14,000 worth of vet bills and related expenses to the victim. Not only is he paying off the judgement via wage garnishment but his dog is required to be muzzled and leashed in public to prevent it from being euthanized. Great dog, jackass for an owner. When I see his muzzled dog it upsets me because a pit bull with a muzzle does not reflect well on the breed and us responsible owners. |

Flagrl; You're lucky! I wish I had a dog park that was 5 minutes from me. We do have one close but I can't drive so it's a 25minute walk for me. So, no dog park running till I can drive.
You can always use a long lead in some situations in a non fenced area. I used to use long leads when taking mine hiking/to the school. |

today i as at the park and i seen a guy with 2 dogs comming so i packed up and put the leashes on and we were at the gate, one of the dogs came running over, he wasnt on a leash, seen both were pitbulls, one seemed to be ok, the one on the leash was lunging and barking and growling, i asked him to grab his other dog and step back so we can leave, he could barley hold them cause he didnt have a leash for the other one, so after we left i heard barking i looked back someone was about to come into the park with there dog, and the dog that was on a leash was at the fence growling and barking, the guy was just sitting on the bench not doing anything, it amazes me, if your dog is that reactive, why would you come and stay when other people are there, if i see someone coming no matter how long or short ive been there ill leave, and if i see someone there i wont go,

That right there would be enough for me not to go back, low key or not. I just let them be tangled til it restricts their walk etc. It's impossible to keep it from going under them and or/just one leg. |
