Default Jorvik found a starving stray....
I have been considering getting another dog for some time. I did plan on getting a dog from the pound for company for Jorvik over the coming month, but tonight i suppose i don't have to now?

[WARNING, THE IMAGE IS UPSETTING]

Disgusting how anyone can allow this to happen to a poor animal.

I had taken Jorvik for a late night walk and let him off his leash for a quick game of fetch (his favorite game might i add!) He dropped his ball and ran into the bushes. I called him and he ignored me, he rarely ignores me so i panicked. I ran down to see why he had run off and to my amazement, he had found a friend. His 'friend' was cowering in the hedge with a thick chain around his neck and tangled around his back leg and a tree. I called my partner to come collect Jorvik and then i took the stray home. He was so scared, you can tell by the picture how terrified he is of people. I've left him a bed a bit of food/water and a snuggly teddy and blanket in a quiet room away from all the pets and noise of the apartment, he is covered in urine, you can smell it a mile off. I've wiped him with scented pet wipes as it would be unfair to force him to be bathed. I'm waiting for the vets to open so i can take him down.

I have to report the incident in the morning, and if nobody claims him, and he is given the all clear from illness disease and all the other temperament checks, i will be keeping him.

Vets, first thing in the morning!

It's Argentina, i doubt doubt anyone would come forward and admit they own the dog. Not unless they really did happen to lose him and he's been missing so long he's starved...there are no reports for missing dogs, so i wouldn't really know what to think.

If you can't find the owner then by all means keep him! Just be careful in your handling of him. I think dogs that are afraid are more likely to bite out of that fear. Might be a good idea to try a 2 week shutdown to give him time to adjust and learn that you will not hurt him.

Thanks for the advice!
I'll take a look at the link, after a nap!

I can hear him shuffling around in the 'quiet room', it's not a big room and there's really not much in there so i'm not too worried about him damaging anything. It's basically like a walk in closet of nothingness.

I've told everyone to leave him be, if anyone needs to do anything for him (aka provide food) I'll do it. Don't want anyone scarring the poor thing for life!
I'm going to ask the vets for a bit of advice too, see if they have any suggestions on how to keep him comfortable with minimal contact for a while.

Oh he is really skinny, in fact, i was afraid to try handle him to bring him home, i was afraid of breaking something :/
He didn't mind me holding him once i had picked him up he just wasn't too keen on being lifted. I wrapped him in my jacket....just in case he did try warning me off. He pretty much clung to me when i tried to put him back down though and when i did eventually put him down he urinated everywhere. I felt so sorry for him. He hasn't eaten yet be has drank quite a bit, i'm not sure though if i should leave any water down or not? I'm thinking no...because he's drank two bowls and barely stops to breath. I'm not sure if he's drinking so much because he's dehydrated, or because he's afraid he wont see/get water again.. Any ideas?

If he drinks too much too fast he could throw it back up. I would not leave water down, maybe a cup every other hours or so. If he won't take food try chicken or beef broth.

Aww, poor thing Once he realizes he's safe, hopefully he'll come around!

Be careful not to overfeed him... starved dogs' systems can't handle it. Feed him small portions two or three times a day, and slooowly increase it as he starts putting on weight.

When one of my dogs was ill from something he ate and another of my dogs went off food for a while due to Pano I was told to re-introduce food very slowly. They advised a bland diet. We started by browning hamburger in a pan and cooking some rice. Then we boiled the hamburger to get the remaining grease out. Then we mixed the hamburger and cooked rice. I made a pretty large bowl of it that i could store in the fridge so it would keep for a few days. We were told to feed a few tablespoons of the mix every 3-4 hours for 3 days or so and then gradually add kibble to it. Another few days of increasing the kibble and decreasing the burger-rice mix until the dogs were able to handle regular meals.

I would also limit water as was already suggested. Maybe a cup every few hours or use ice cubes because water absorbs quickly and the ice will melt slowly so that the dog doesn't get too much water too fast.

Thanks guys!

He's been to the vets. The drama was unbelievable.
It took over an hour to get him to the car, to the vets and to be seen. Two attempts. I almost asked the vet to come to him! He wasn't having any of it.
I had a genius but risky idea, i took Jorvik with us (on the second attempted trip, the first time was a complete failure, couldn't even get him to the car)
just in hopes that he'd remember seeing him yesterday and he'd "follow"
I tried picking him up and he screamed like there was no tomorrow, he must have known i was going to put him in the car. It wasn't until Jor jumped in that he tried to jump in himself. That was already progress.

Then when we got to the vets, it was twice as much effort to get him out of the car, not to mention the mess in my boot :/

Jor must have jumped in and out of the car numerous times but the poor boy wouldn't budge, so another genius idea, (I just wish Jor didn't weigh 45lbs!, i'm only short, that's heavy! haha) I picked up Jor and placed him on the ground, within seconds the dog (lets call him pup) wanted to be picked up,so i did the same with him. He's got quite a character. He raced to hide under the car every time he saw another dog (i had a long leash on him in case he got scared)

Genius idea three. I walked Jor beside him, to 'block' the dogs from passing the pup and scaring him. He looked like he was glued to Jorviks side all the walk to the door.

Just about to walk through the door and it opens. A rottweiler bounces out, pup panicked, i mean really panicked, yelping, screaming, urinating everywhere. It was a secluded fenced off area, and to save causing him any harm i let his leash go. He bolted, as fast as he could and hid behind a post.
It was adorable but sad.

I tried walking over to him with Jorvik and without him but he wouldn't let me near - he just moved further away. So i returned to the door and let Jorvik off the lead to go over, I wasn't afraid of a fight breaking out, mostly due to the fact that Jor would just run away if he saw a danger and he usually is pretty good at guessing when he isn't wanted. (He's only 7 months old, and it's happened a few times, he's getting used to avoiding fights)

A few minutes passed with him hovering around the pup and trying to play. I then called him over, as i had hoped, the pup cautiously followed him. During all the drama the lovely vet had cleared the waiting area enough for him to not fear going inside. She knows Jor quite well so she called him straight over in to the vets office. Little pup followed, he sniffed around a little, urinated, but followed otherwise nicely. She shut the door, we went through the back door. After a bit of drama on the table, they both got their shots (Jor had one of those "empty shots" just so the pup knew it would not hurt. He had a health check, and they took some blood to make sure he's healthy (So to speak)

I've been given a few food samples to try him on, she gave a bit of milky biscuits (not sure what that was, looked like baby food..lol)

He's lost a few teeth, she thinks they were pulled out :/ Only one reason i can see someone doing that... He also has a few old scars on his sides. He's estimated to be around Jorviks age, a year old max. A bit dehydrated but considering his state she wasn't surprised.

The journey home was about as dramatic. But now the poor pup is sleeping soundly. And he's even been playing with Jorvik every now and then. We've left the quiet room door a little so he can leave when he wants.

He seems a lot happier now, i took a few photos that i will have to upload at some point!

The vet has also offered him a home if for any reason i can't keep him. It may be an option, as my 7yr old shepherd mix has become a bit naughty with Jorvik recently and for the first time since i got her back (My ex had her, had to threaten him with the law to get her back a few weeks ago)

She tried to attack him yesterday when she stole his toy and he tried to get it back. It only lasted a few seconds, it was basically a very sudden warning. The worry here was the fact that Jor stuck up for himself and if i hadn't have been there, who knows what could have happened.

Anyway, so far so good.

Do you leave your dogs alone together unsupervised?

I also noticed in your first post, you mentioned wanting to get another dog as a companion for Jorvik.. who is a puppy still himself, and a pit bull mix...

If you still want to keep Pup and maintain peace between Jor and the other dog, I would suggest supervising Jor and Pup as Jor seems to be helping Pup and then separating Jor and Pup from your other dog to keep them from fighting. We call it crate and rotate, but you don't need to actually crate. Crating is fine, but if you prefer to you can use baby gates to block off rooms or outdoor kennels or even a chain spot so the dogs can relax safely away from each other.

A lot of people manage multiple dog households when one dog is aggressive with others by keeping them separated and spending time with each dog individually. It's easy once you get into a routine.
