My Pit Bulls all bark.. but it's a "HEY!! OVER HERE!! PET MEEEEE!" bark haha. My hounds are the ones who will take someone down is they are uninvited or ill-intentioned, and they have barks that can not be mistaken for anything other than they mean BUSINESS.
My Boston Terrier is the best watch dog - She barks at everything (she's also deaf, so she barks at shadows and things blowing in the wind that catch her eye haha). I second having a little dog who is going to make a racket! |

My dog will bark and with a very nasty tone if you approach my house and he does not know you. It does look intimidating to someone that does not know the dog. But of course if you approach him and pet him he will stop and quickly become your best friend. I am sure if he could talk he would then lead you to all the valuables in the hopes you will give him a treat or take him for a ride. Want a good guard dog get a Plott Hound, we have one and judging by her howl you can tell what kind of person she is alerting us about. She doesn't really bark she howls and its a good deep aggressive tone so it stardolls people. She's not aggressive but she certainly doesn't show she isn't. |

I agree with either the little dog or maybe a small hound, like a beagle. Hounds are generally great barkers/watchdogs. I have a beagle/cur mix and he is an excellent watch dog. He doesn't bark at random stuff, only when people are coming up our driveway, lingering in front of our house, or in our yard. He's very alert--recognizes neighbors and doesn't mouth off to them.
The great thing about either of these two choices--Little dogs raised with larger dogs and not treated like pampered dolls generally tend to have a more balanced temperament. And you really can't go wrong with a hound, especially a beagle. They're dog friendly, like to be in a pack, and are very sweet and lovable. Plus, there are tons of beagles in rescue! |

I have a hound/pitbull mix, and she's a fantastic, more than needed in the suburbs alarm dog....lol If she sees a person or another dog even a few blocks away, the whole neighborhood hears about it. lol We'd actually prefer her to stop this, but she'd be perfect for your situation! lol She is very reactive, but if someone actually approaches her, she's all folded in half, wagging her tail licking on em...lol Def. all bark, no bite.
I think a beagle/mix would be a great choice. I agree that they're generally good alarm dogs, easy to care for, good in groups of dogs, etc. And they're WAAAYYY cuter than a freaking min pin or chi. lol |

Mine bark at EVERYTHING. Bella( shes a year and a half) was abused as a pup before we took her in so if she hears a leaf in the back yard she goes nuts, or she will see someone walking or a car driving by our house and she'll growl(not in an attack way, just a warning) and go to the middle of the driveway and watch them until they're out of site. Which in return is teaching my 6 month old (who we got at 6 weeks) to do the same. Believe me, you are LUCKY!!! I cannot break either of them as to when its good to bark, when its not necessary, and when enough is enough... especially when having guests over..it'll take her a good 15 minutes to get out of "protective" mode. If someone actually did break in...she would more then likely run away and hide.

For the price of a good watch dog and training, you can get some motion sensors installed at the entrance of your driveway and there will be an audible tone in your home when a vehicle passes it. They aren't that expensive at all. Get a good one and they never fail either |

Hounds are great watch dogs. You may want to steer clear of the more serious guardian breeds, as they are often more guard than bark, and wont warn an intruder of their presence. They'll simply go for them.
My bullies are excellent watch dogs. They'll raise hell everytime someone walks by the yard while they're out. Lucky me. -.- Motion sensor lights wont do much to deter people, but a couple cameras will. Get you a security system with cameras and such and you'll have a good setup to deter people without the risk of a lawsuit that dogs can bring about. Because sometimes shit just goes wrong and you never know how the law is going to work out for you in a situation with an intruder and dogs. It's not always fair. |

There was a poll done also that houses with any sort of dog are lease likely to broken into, especially if someone knows you have them. But yes, motion sensors work awesome. A friend of mine has a system that every time someone drives into the driveway or opens a door it tells you that someone is in the driveway or what door has been opened. Not sure of the price though. If you want an actual guard dog that can be trained easily I'd go for a shepherd...yours can also be trained to know when something isn't right..just takes a lot of dedication on both parts

Skylar (grandma pit bull in our house) is and has always been an awesome watch dog. Whenever someone pulls in our driveway or stops in front of the house her hackles go up and she barks (strong bark) to alert us that someone's here. The others couldn't care less, but Skylar is a very attentive girl. Of course anyone could walk right in our house and she'd run up to them looking for some lovin...but they don't have to know that!!

My pit bull mix is a terrible guard dog. I have very little doubt she'd smother intruders with love and slime. The only time she ever really barks is when the neighbor's Chihuahua does.
My German Shepherd/Lab mix is a great guard dog, he alerts for reasonable things and stands his ground but isn't out of control by any means. Tazzy... Toy Poodle... barks at everything that moves. Someone could close a car door 2 blocks away and he'd bark. |

I second the Beagle!!! Mine is a great watch dog and he alerts the Rottie as needed! But my Cur/Lab/Bully looking breed thing is a great one as well and she will back up her bark. So why not a Cur? |

Whoever said Minpins make the best watchdogs was right on target. I have three (not sure what I was smoking...) and they bark at EVERYTHING it drives me nuts. They will even bark if I walk into a room half the time. Love them to death, but hell I just want to strangle them because they don't shut the fuck up.
My APBT will bark, but only because her brother and sister Pins have started it all. If those little mouthpieces weren't around, I'm pretty sure that anyone coming around would only get a sock smushed into their face. ![]() |

I hate that my dogs bark...I would trade ya lol, seriously my 3 year old will bark at people he knows, like my parents, my hubby's parents, the neighbor that is not next to his fence (the one that likes him lol) and sound mean doing it, but if I am there and they come in the fence he is all fine, if he is inside the house its the same thing as if they are outside the fence, the weird dog. Anyway he has something in him, he is a mutt that has some bully breed features. I would get a small breed dog though if you want barks you can hear easy.

Gunther will do a low growl and bark at noises he doesn't think belong. He'll do it until I tell him to stop. He's very good at only barking at things that really aren't 'our noises'. We're planning on getting a Fila at some point. They will gaurd property/their people. BUT they dont like anyone but their people.
