Chloe, so I guess your next dog is gonna be named William or one of its derivatives?

In all seriousness my wife picked out his name. It's alright.

Karma got her name because she came along at a time in our lives where we needed a little "good Karma" and she was a rescue from a crappy situation, so we were sorta her good karma too. Original "owner" (for a week) named her "sissy", I think it was good to get rid of that too. lol Her more frequently used name (by me anyways) is puppy-butt.

Cassie's original name was "Cricket", because she's on the smallish side, and has a very glossy black coat. And she hops all over the place at the end of a leash like a cricket. lol Somehow, Cricket, turned into Cassie ??? and it stuck? lol Her frequent nickname is Cassie-bear.

Technically I guess you could say Sasha is named after an actress but I really also like the meaning of the name. (Its a Russian form of Alexander which translates to "Defender of Men")

I wasn't going to name her that I was saving that name for my Husky but it just seemed to fit her, so she got the name. However she is a total wuss so the definition doesn't quite fit. lol

Some of you have spent a lot of thought on your dog's name, and it's not anywhere in their registered name... Is this pretty common?
While most of my dogs are not registered or the ones that are, I didn't get their papers so don't know what it was, the ones that are registered, were named before I got them and I don't like there names!

But I've seen it go either way. Sometimes they have part of their name in the registered name, or something completely different. Sometimes breeders pick registered name or require a suffix or prefix to the name and what you want to call the dog doesn't fit.

I have retired racing Greyhounds and they have some pretty wonky registered names.

My current two, Ronon is registered as Gil's Concho (Gil is the prefix given to dogs owned by Steve Gilster).

Rebel's registered name is Bob's Dose. The rescue was calling him Bob, but I just don't like that name.

Some have really cool registered names like Drinktillshessexy or Caymen Went. Or my possible new foster Rachel McAdams after the celebrity (entire litter was given celebrity names).

Molli was a CL adoption and came with the name. We didn't see any reason to change it though it slowly morphed into "Mo" and "MoMo".

Jet (SBT/Bully mix of some type) was initially named "Wilbur" by the shelter. That didn't last long at all as he didn't fit the name. Since he's missing a front leg, "Jet" seemed appropriate (one landing gear in front, two in the rear).

Boxie Rox is named after one of my husband's White Wolf RPG characters. The story behind his character is that he was born the runt of the litter. The pups were caught and taken to a research lab where one of the techs looked at this little pup and commented "That pup is dumb as a box of rocks". The pup thought his name was Boxie Rox after that and it stuck. Needless to say, neither the character nor our pup are that dumb :-)

Tank my GSD, was a puppy when I got him. I wanted a huge dog so I named him with hopes that he would grow into it. At 100 pounds I think it worked :P

Moose my husband's husky, was named by the breeders (which I think fit seeing as he's pure white) and he was too lazy to re-name him. He made jokes about snowball/flake but I cut off those hopes. I will NOT be seen running down the street screaming "Snowball/flake get back here!".

Madison my pit bull, is named after Madison Wisconsin where I'm from. I'm stationed at Barksdale AFB so I'm way far from home and was feeling pretty home sick when she showed up.

Default Where did you get your dog's name?
As the title states where did your dog's names come from?

For Beau my 10 year old Beagle he came with his name, but I put my own spin on it. His name is ACTUALLY Mr. Bojangles from the song by Nitty Gritty Band. His registered name is Murray's Mr. Bojangles is High Rollin'.

Moe my 7 year old Dachshund is named after the food place....his name was going to be Rocky.....but my sister who was like 5 at the time I think.....named him. His registered name is Murray's Slap Happy Seal.

Takoda my 2ish year old Cur/Lab/Bully breed mutt....was from a list of indian names my boyfriend found and we settled on Takoda which means "Friend to All".

Wrigley my 5 year old Westie that I rehomed last year was named after the gum company. His registered name was Murray's Wrigley Spearmint Gum. (God I miss that fucker)

So explain yours?

There wasnt really a purpose behind my dogs name. I was going to keep the name freckles that the breeder of her gave her but then i thought about different names like Diamond, Mia, and then i thought of the name Daisy and i just stuck with that i was also thinking princess but that seemed like something a little kid would more and likely pick

When my traumatized dog was dumped at my house in the middle of the night, my weird little nephew kept petting her and saying "herz booooo-ti-ful!" in a sing-song voice. She loved it! She still does! We just shortened it to Boo for everyday use.

Gauge, my very first dog that was re-homed was named by my brother and was named after a gun.

Sunny, my brother named him that, I think it was because Sunny is always so happy as a puppy and he still is.

Serenity, in my eyes, I did and didn't pick that name. I have never thought of naming a dog Serenity. When I saw her image, her name popped in to my head and I didn't feel comfortable naming her anything else. Some one else or she herself picked that name, I just chose to keep using it. That name better fit it's meaning in a few years..

Betty, Blue, and Beetle came with their names

Lulu and Cleatus were named by my son for characters from the Dukes of Hazzard

Eagle was named by my son-I have no idea why he picked Eagle

B.A. was named for B.A. Baracus from the A-team

We don't have TV, but we do buy some DVD's from old TV shows so that's why all the old 80"s names.

Roxie was named by the shelter. I just couldn't think of a more fitting name for her. She's a pretty rockin' dog, and so it stuck.

BJ and Max are from MASH (Honeycutt & Klinger).

My first baby, Katie, was 3 years-old and already named when we adopted her. When we got Leo, my daughters (ages 7 & 9) were coming up with RIDICULOUS names. Desperate for something decent, I thought of our Kate and then Hugh Jackman (Mmmm....) in that movie Kate & Leopold. Hence, Leo. I threw my kids a bone by making his full name Leopold Thermopolous after Mia Thermopolous, Anne Hathaway's character in Princess Diaries. lol!

Gypsy (RIP) was named after my Granny's old rat terrier, Gypsy Rose Lee. I loved that dog, and at the time I named Gypsy, I hadn't intended to keep her. Her registered name is Nickerson's Gypsy Lullaby.

Mexico, well...when I found her, again, I hadn't intended to keep her. I contacted many, many rescues, but most turned me down, telling me that the 10 week old puppy I found, who was fearful, shy, and terrified of people, would likely just be put down because of her issues. So she stayed. And I am pretty bad at choosing names, and just decided that since I found her in New Mexico, I'd name her Mexico.

Umah, I wanted a german name, something not too common. It means "Tranquility" and she has yet to fit it, lol! Her registered name is O'Thaisce Lullaby Vonmarionhaus. Thaisce means 'beloved' in Gaelic.

Marsha got her name because when I first saw her in the shelter, she looked like a toasted marshmellow. White on the bottom, and golden brown on the top! Her previous name from the people who surrendered her to the shelter, was Delilah I think. And since I couldn't call her Marshmellow (no way!) I shortened it to Marsha, lol.

Miss Kitty I had a hard time choosing a name for, and out of all of the ones I liked, I think I picked the one that was least liked by everyone else, lol! To me, she really resembles a mountain lion, or 'puma', but since I already have an Umah, that was just too close..so Miss Kitty it is!

Conway, I had originally named Mikhail, which is pronounced like 'mee-high-eel', and while I liked it, it just didn't suit. And then I was researching scottish/Gaelic names and came across Conway, which means "Hound of the plains", and thought it fit. Of course, now he gets called Mr. Twitty more often than not, even though I did not name him after the singer, lol!

Zora (rip), her name just came to me. I found out later that it meant "The dawn", and it was so fitting at the time.
