I know a lot of you are going to be shocked to hear me say this, but for years I have always heard the ticking pattern came from bird dog blood being infused in the breed. I took this with a grain of salt until I ran across this:
__________________________________________________ _____________ Years ago my brother had a half pitbull and a half birddog for a watchdog. He owned a Tavern about a half mile from his house. He put that dog at the back door to keep people from breaking in. He had a good bred little pitbull bitch that got loose and went to that tavern and got bred to that half birddog. He took the pups down and gave them to Jim Williams which was a mistake. Jim Williams put papers on them and sold them all over. A man by the name of Holliday got one of those female pups and when she got grown he bred her to a Loposay dog I sold him. Everyone of those pups were good. Danny Burton ended up with one called Gorilla that was a four time winner if I'm not mistaken. Just think that Gorilla was one eighth birddog. Charley Adkisson rolled a dog at him when he was young. Gorilla did real good but we couldn't make ourselves buy him when we found out where he came from and who his dam was. - Randy Fox's Pit Bull History. __________________________________________________ _____________ I think this applies to the true ticked pattern however, not dogs who simply have pigment spots under a white coat, like Mater does for example. And before anyone says anything, I think ticked APBTs & ticked dogs in general are gorgeous. I just wanted to put this bit of interesting history out there as a possible source. Blessings ... |

Yes, there are Bluetick Coonhounds & English Coonhounds can be red ticked. I have seen blue & red ticking on beagles & have seen blue tick Basset Hounds & of course bird dogs come in several colors of ticking; I think black, blue, red & lemon are their colors but don't hold me to that. IDK if Catahoulas have ticking or not. I know they come in merle, brindle & solid colors but I've not seen a ticked one yet.
BTW, since we are having an Ohioan get-together here, I was born in raised in Toledo! ![]() Blessings ... |

Definitely American Bully, he says they are Gotti and Razor's Edge. I'd say clear of them, not because they are Ambullies, but because they don't seem to really do anything besides breed, and no health testing.
![]() Interesting, ABK. Not so sure I'd say all dogs with ticking do, but that is a good post. My dog, Morgan, has ticking, but has no papers, so, not really a good example either way. lol. |

Yes, I found it interesting as well CHJ. I had heard the rumor for many years but never found a detailed written account of it until a few years ago.
Of course we must remember not all dog here are ticked. For example, mater is a white dog who has black skin pigment that just happens to show through under his white fur. True ticked dogs are like the one the OP posted. Blessings ... ---------- Post added at 04:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:59 PM ---------- EDIT: I wanted to add, you are right CHJ, not all ticked dogs may have the tainted blood in them. But I did search just for SNG & found one of the most famous ticked dogs who ever lived, Busenbark's CH. Rattler had a lot of Williams blood in his background! ![]() But on the other hand I checked out another well known ticked dog, Lilly's Master Yoda & didn't see any Williams blood. But the ped did have a lot of unknowns, so it may or may not be there. Either way they're beautiful dogs & I guess the only way to know for sure is to know your pedigree. Blessings ... |
