Sam is entirely white with just two little black spots and some skin ticking. Shes been getting rashes, one under her arm pit and one between her legs. Ive been using antibiotic ointment on it which seems to help but these rashes come and go. I think she just has sensitive skin and ive heard a couple times that white pits do sometimes have this problem. Is it true? anything other than the ointment that I can use to help keep her skin healthy?

Yes, it's generally the rule not the exception that white pit bulls have skin hypersensitivities. Lily, for example, has a hypersensitivity to staph and is on a special injectable 'vaccine' to help her body cope.

Welcome to the world of white pit bulls. I'd look into getting her on a fish-based, grain free food to avoid food allergies. You can wipe her down with a cool wet cloth after rolling around in grass (a common hypersensitivity). You can also use hypoallergenic detergent to wash bedding. And, in the end, like Lily, the dog may end up living on antihistamines and shots. Good luck .

Have her looked at by a vet. Could be allergies, could be yeast or fungus, could be staph or turn into a staph infection from being raw and open, could be a lot of things. Best to start having the vet monitor it so that you can start eliminating causes and find the reason. If it comes and goes before you get her in to the vet then take pictures to show the vet so he/she can at least see whats happening.

Just curious, what are you feeding her? Grain free or no? Do you see outbreaks after you clean with certain cleaners or when you use things like carpet fresheners? After you wash bedding she lays on?

Youre all gunna kill me but right now shes on pedegree food :/ from what ive read, switching her to better food should help.. Its really hard to find good quality food here in MX, but ill go on a hunt this weekend when i get paid! Also i see a trip to the vet this weekend cuz right now the rash in her arm pit is pretty bad she recently got a bath.. I guess ill be buying new shampoo too!

Good point MJ. Vet visits should also be included; I was just kind of listing stuff you can do to prevent breakouts.

Ill have to see what they have online. Hopefully its not too expensive, my husband and i dont make much money down here. But hopefully i can find it locally in a pet store here! Shell drfinitely be seeing the vet this weekend and until then ill make sure i keep ointment on it to avoid infection.

You could also start researching now to put her on a raw diet, if no good kibbles are available/ it's too expensive.

You might research and consider raw feeding. It would be LOTS better than kibble (maybe cheaper too) and there are folks here that could help you with it.

As MJ and perhaps others said, you need to try and determine the cause, not just an effective treatment. Do you wash/bathe her often (common activity for those with white dogs) and if so, what do you use?

If you can't find TOTW check for other brands that don't have grain, chicken or beef in them. There are a few out there.

As far as shampoo, look for oatmeal based with no fragrance and dyes. It will cost you a few dollars more, but it's worth it.

Try to keep her away from surfaces cleaned with chemical cleaners including bedding.

i dont use chemical cleaners in the areas she is allowed in.. Im totally guilty of using MY shampoo to bathe her (which is about once every 2 weeks).. It was never a problem for my old family dog but he didnt have skin sensitivity either so ill try something more gentle. So i guess ill do a vet trip, better food, gentler shampoo and hopefully that all helps! Thanks so much for all the help guys, this is all great advice!

I used Taste of the Wild Salmon dog food, but found it COSTLY with my crappy job. I did lots of searching on the internet and found that Costco sells a food (which I now have been using for 2 years) called Natures Domain, also Salmon flavor...and it IS THE SAME FOOD AS TOTW. They are both made by Diamond and have the same ingredients, but its about $15.00 cheaper and if i remember correctly is 5 lbs more per bag. It's 31.99 for 35 lbs. It's just marketed for Costco under different labeling. They make a chicken flavor too but I stick to the fish for allergy reasons. Good luck. Also, get that pup on flea meds! i find Dr. Foster and Smiths has the best pricing for advantage 2 which i use in the winter months and advantix for summer months when ticks are around (advantage is obv. cheaper so i switch when i can).
If your vet recommends an antihistimine....ive tried them all and the best for my izzy has been Tavist. They dont sell it on the shelves where i live because other allergy drugs such as claritin and benedryl are more popular (tried those as well) but my vet said tavist for one reason or another tends to work better in dogs than people. i order it through my local pharmacy, I dont need an rx for it though its just a special order. Its also called Clemastine Fumerate 1.34 mg. I give her 1 in the am and 1 in the pm. hope this helps!

Our dog, Nick is maybe 30% white, and he's had a cancerous lump removed from his leg a couple years ago. My vet (at the time) did some research and found that white bully breeds are more likely to get cancer. I've had a couple other people ask me about cancer in white bully dogs.
So that's something else to be aware of. Avoid the sun as possible, and look for some dog-safe sunscreen.

Zoey is 98% white and has never shown even the slightest, of a skin sensitivity to anything, including the sun. She also is a raw fed dog.
