Default How? Dog "proofing" the house
Any idea's?

I'm curious about what to do with the water dish and hardwood floors?

We have tried towels that we would change everyday. Now there is a mold stain on the floor.
We have tried the plastic placemats, but water would just get under them.
We have tried a dish that raised, but you know dogs...

Anna is sweet enough to lick the water around the bowl when she's finished, but I'm noticing the wood boards are warping in the area.

Am I just to resign to the idea "I have a dog, I can't have nice things" or is there something out there?

~~~~~~~~~~~
Dog Proof suggestion:
We leave coasters for the dog to "steal" and chew on, rather than the table. Seems to work.
Since she is so timid, we have a baby gate blocking her from the front door, that she would otherwise destroy if we left. Also, seems to work
What's your story? Anyone else have the hardwood floor problem?
No, she's just a slob. She drinks and water goes everywhere. I thought it was "dog thing"
The "spill proof" bowls aren't really spill proof, but they are pretty well splash proof. I keep one in my truck that really doesn't make a mess even while driving. Good idea Tanner
Omg I had one of those for my cat (obviously not the giant 5 gal one) and the dogs made such a mess with it that I put it in the storage shed.
Pricey, but here's another idea if the spillproof bowl doesn't work out: http://www.orvis.com/store/product.a...ubcat_id=10575
In my car, I put a smaller water bowl inside a larger one so if it sloshes, the water gets caught in the larger bowl.
That may work on your hardwood floors...???? maybe????
These are great ideas, my favorite:
put the water bowl in the bathtub
(except she's afraid of the bathroom)
Let her drink out of the toilet? Lol
Nevermind, I see now you said she's afraid of the bathroom. Do you have an unfinsihed basement or garage you could move her food/water to?
You can have nice things! Nice slobbery, fur covered things
I have used a similar set up in the past to what Kit mentioned... I used a GIANT turkey roasting pan that I put the water bowl on the far side of, in an attempt to catch the massive amounts of drool and water they create. I swear, half the water they drink falls right back out... only a lot slimier, and with bits of grass
Well, BooBoo the Idiot circus dog actually prefers to drink out of the tub. I give up. Now I am trained to turn the faucet on when I go in there. The water dish is only for dunking toys before slobbering goo all over my pottery barn couch.
Does anyone else have a big bungee cord on the fridge because their lovely dog learned how to open it?
No, but my cat prefers to drink water out of glasses. If you leave a glass of water unattended for 20 seconds, I guarantee the cat will come by and shove his paw into it to lick water off his paw. Argh.
We moved the water bowls into the kitchen, where there's tile. lol, and we just wipe up the corner a few times a day. Both our dogs are massive water slobs. lol Our cat will ONLY drink water from the bathroom sink. If you give her a bowl, she tips it over, and looks at you in complete disdain. lol
No bungee cords, but Cassie has learned how to open plastic cupcake containers when they're up on the counters. (pushes the lid up with her nose) She's got a thing for cupcakes, and will literally inhale them in seconds if you turn your back. Papers and all. I laugh now, but shit she's made me mad doing this before! lol I've had to re-make several orders at the last second because she's gotten into them while waiting for pickup.....
My mom has the wood floors, and she uses a big square of left over carpet under the water bowl, and under the carpet square is a rubber mat. works for her I guess! I like the coasters on the table lol, Sam never really eats furniture so I havent had to worry about that but I have to puppy proof my room before I leave for work every day (no shoes on the floor, nothing chewable within puppy reach, etc.)
I use a dish drain mat under their water bowl. It helps some. Keeps the floor dryer than a regular towel and looks a little nicer. But I have some messy drinkers. More water falls out of Ronon's mouth than stays in. The other day he is drinking and I walk past getting ready for work, he slings his head to see what I'm doing and I got soaked. I'm resigned to the "can't have nice things". That is a common saying our house!
