Hey guys, I need some help. I am looking to get a Pit puppy and I need to know what sex would fit my life style better. I have 3 boys, 8 yrs, 5 yrs, and 5 months old. I have never owned a pit before and I don't know the traits specific to sex such as, temperment, aggression, overall health, and care. In other words, what should I get, male or female??? thank guys so much!!!

You need to look into finding a good breeder first, which takes time. A good breeder doesnt have pups 24/7 so you might have to wait a little while. After finding a good breeder and dogs with a temperment you like then look at the pups and see which one you think is right for you.
I have a male and a female with mine i notice that my Male is much more needy always wants to be on top of me under my feet. My female is just as happy next to me as she is laying on one of the dog beds. (but that is MY two dogs and EVERY dog is different). If you are in a rush to get a dog and cant find a breeder you like with pups, look into adopting there is plenty of puppies and adults in need of homes and if you are not going to be showing the dog then you really dont need a dog with pappers. If you dont want to adopt because you "dont know what there past was like" look into a rescue that fosteres out there dogs. Most foster homes know all the dis likes and likes of the dogs. Goodluck with what you pick but make sure to stay far away from Back yard breeders.!!! |

Do you have the time and space to have a dog? Especially one that is not exactly low maintenance?
Do you mind that your friends, family and neighbors (AND the parents of your kids' friends) may have a problem with a Pit Bull in the house? (ie, be prepared that some parents will not want their kids at your house). Honestly, with 3 young kids like that and you being inexperienced with the breed, I believe you need to re-think your decision. Carla |

I have to agree with the other posters.
---------- Post added at 02:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:56 PM ---------- on different breeds and understand there needs before you get a puupy. Every dog is different but certain breeds are going to have different energy levels, potential health issues, and temperments. I love my pit mix but had no idea what I wad getting into when I adopted him, I don't regret it for a second, he is a wonderful dog but is very activity and needs tons of stimulation. Good luck I am certainly not trying to discourage you away from the breed but ease do your homework. |

Why don't you read some of the sticky threads on this site, it might help you decide which breed to get.
I became a pitbull rehabber overnnight and read the forum threads and knew what to expect. This breed needs time for training, excercise as they can be high energy drive (45 minutes a day, at least), dog aggressive and high prey drive. not everyone wants to see you come visit their house with your dog, as these dogs can be dog aggressive. You can try to control it but it is NEVER a guarantee of how the dog will behave around another dog. |

When you go to get a pup you're buying that person as much as you are a dog. If they aren't answering questions to your satisfaction or you get a bad vibe from them walk away and don't look back. I don't know that I can say I've noticed a real standard with regards to temperment/sex when it comes to bulldogs. I will say that there is so much difference in personality from one dog to the next that I would have a hard time guessing when it comes to that.

Unless you are truly set on a puppy, I would suggest looking into adopting an older dog. You will have a great idea of temperament, adult size, energy level, etc. If you adopt out of a foster home you will have an idea of how the dog is with children and other pets (most likely). You will also not have to deal with housebreaking a puppy which is something that takes a LOT of time.
Sex is definitely a personal preference. I'd look at that less than a dog that fits into your home life and activity level. |

Hi,
We're not trying to discourage you. Obviously, we think pit bulls are some of the best dogs out there, and we love ours. But they are not for everyone. A pit bull takes a lot of time and work, and you will have to deal with negative stereotypes from ignorant people. If you're willing to put in the time and energy, you will be the owner of a truly wonderful dog, full of love and personality, and a great addition to your family. However, here in Phoenix, the shelters are full of pit bulls who had the misfortune of finding owners who WEREN'T up to the task. There's absolutely nothing wrong with those dogs, but they are paying the price for people who got them without knowing what is involved in owning a pit bull. It's a horrible tragedy. Pit bulls have diverse personalities, and choosing the sex isn't going to have much impact on the dog's personality and temperment. My recommendation is don't make your decision today. Read the articles here. Read up on the dogs. They are nothing like what the newspapers make them out to be (they're highly intelligent, extemely loving and affectionate, people loving, creative, very high energy, but they're also stubborn and strong willed). If you decide you still want a pit bull, I would highly recommend going to a shelter and looking at a slightly older dog. The shelter will have evaluated the dog and can let you know how that dog is with children and with other dogs (both of which are very important). Most pit bulls are wonderful with people, but not all. And pit bulls are all over the board when it comes to how they are with other dogs and animals. Good luck. Owning a pit bull is a very rewarding experience, but be prepared to put in the time and energy that this dog will need. |

I have no patience for puppies in the first place, and with that many young children I can't imagine training a puppy properly. I would check out local rescues and look for a youngish dog in a foster home with children. it shouldn't be hard. My dog was about one when adopted her, great with children and cats, and already housebroken.

You really have your hands full with three boys...one of which is an infant. If I were you, I would think very seriously about what you could be getting into adopting a Pit bull type puppy.
They are not for novice owners, not saying you are, but they take a HUGE commitment, and basically if you can survive the first year of pit puppy hell.... you can pretty much do anything. Sometimes puppyhood will be longer..... These dogs like to work, they like to do stuff....they basically need a job. For the most part they are not happy decorating your couch, in fact if they aren't stimulated physically and mentally they will probably be destroying that couch. As wonderful as they can be with children, they are a lot of work regardless of what sex they are. IMO you should really think long and hard about adopting this breed at this stage of your life, because they really do require a lot of you...more than you really know. |

No offense but i just don't recommend this breed for a first time owner. It's like parrots-- people go straight to the large macaws not realizing these birds require SO MUCH EFFING WORK! Start with a cockatiel I always say lol or for dogs-- maybe a little Maltese or bichon... Large breed- maybe an young adult lab or golden (one that you can see the personality of as some of those can even be high strung).
