Default ideas for exercise?
so JJ needs more exercise. other than hand walking, what do you suggest?

I'm planning on making another flirt pole (she broke my last one)
hand walking, a bit of jogging (she turns a year on the 28th)

I was thinking about rollerblading with a harness on her, and letting her pull me. is that a good idea? is there a certain kind of harness that would be best for that?

I need to think of ideas that don't involve my other dogs, which is how she gets the majority of her exercise right now. since they all get along at the moment, I usually spend about an hour playing with all of them in the yard together, and then walking them individually. however they are playing a bit TOO hard and she has a lot of shows coming up and I would like to avoid any more play related injuries (mostly just scratches)

so...what do you guys do to exercise your dogs?

Even if you don't want that, I like the harnesses for any exercise pulling. (Obviously for weight pulling you'd want a harness specific for it)

See if there are any agility clubs nearby that you can join. You don't have to compete. Agility is fun and good exercise.

Not really great exercise, but keeps 'em busy when rambunctious and on a tear ...
Laser pen ... just don't make your dog neurotic LOL
Couple of times a week or if it's raining hard out ... Mason plays with the Laser pen
It works outside too of course
I swear he's gonna catch that red dot one of these days

Found it in the pet section of Walmart for 7 or 8 bucks ... batteries included

Maybe the best home exercise along with hand walking is a mill and/or swimming

Throw in a bunch of mental exercise as well. That wears them out really good.
The agility is a great idea. My dogs LOVE it.

Be careful with that, Joe. Depending on Mason's personality he could become OCD with the laser and/or any reflections and end up endlessly chasing them. My brother used to do the laser pointer with Sid until he got like that. Took forever to break him of chasing any and every reflected light he saw. But Sid is the obsessive type.

Didn't even take a laser light for Spaz to start being OCD about reflected light, shadows, etc. Yay herding breeds!

I rollerblade with Hades, I don't know if I'd to do too much pulling if she's around a year, but depending on how far you can run you might be able to rollerblade longer.

I use a plain harness for rollerblading. Our sledding x-back harness' hook up is low, (pretty much looks like a weight pull harness) you want your leash to hook up high on the back. A skijoring harness would work as well. I have a pair of Landroller rollerblades and I *could not* rollerblade like I do without them. Quad rollerblades, with the four mini wheels have intense vibration, every tiny hole or rock can send you flying and it numbs out my legs. Landrollers (the ones Cesar Milan uses) just have two big ass huge wheels, so there's hardly any vibration and it's very smooth.

IMO swimming is the best exercise around. Easy on the joints but builds muscle and burns calories like no other!

Seconding swimming. It's great, just make sure if you've been doing it for a while that you walk your dog for a little afterwards to help prevent cramping

My dog won't even bat an eye at the laser pen.

My cat on the other hand used to go batshit crazy over it. Until one day he realized it was me controlling it and walked over to me, saw it in my hand, and took his paw and literally whacked me across the face.

Evil creatures.

That is cool! But I could see Hades seriously injuring himself, he's not the most dainty or agile of creatures sometimes!

OMG I love that exercise wheel!!

I wonder how you would make that..

Hubby said get the boys to run on it and generate electricity lol.. said probably not a good idea.. probably be considered animal abuse..

but I bet the boys would love that!

Wow! Very impressive.

---------- Post added at 08:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:52 PM ----------

How about fetch and or frisbee combined with obedience/agility exercises? That's pretty much how I worked my Malinois(combined with protection) and how I am starting my little girl as she gets older.

The exercise wheel is great! Too bad Romeo wouldn't do it. When he's running he likes to go places.
