Anyone ever owned a Brittany? I'm nowhere near getting another dog. An apartment with just Baloo is crazy enough. But I think the next dog I get will be a Brittany.

But I've always loved the ones I've met. So spunky and fun. But I don't know anyone personally that own any. So I was just wondering.

I would make sure they are health tested, isnt there a disease or something that their brains are screwed up or swell or something and its highly painful and debilitating for the dogs, its genetic so they can health test for it.. I dont mean to be negative but something to look up and think about before purchasing a dog

I've been attacked by a crazy one. It didn't bite me, but thats because I had the Ridgeback with me. It was lucky it didn't get its psycho ass eaten.

I've seen others in yards and Lily and I were chased by a different one... I had to throw rocks to stop it from attacking her. Never met/seen a nice one. But then this area is flush with crap bred sporting dogs.

Really? I've never met one. I've seen the little tiny spaniels in boarding/shelters but I don't like them much, lol. Met some mean ones.

I guess it depends on what kind of hunting is common around you. Up in Tennessee they do a lot of deer hunting, but where I live in central Mississippi and Northern Alabama, a bunch more people hunt birds than deer.

We had one breed fancier come to classes. She did field work with them and was hoping to get some obedience titles. She never did. The dog's were very clever and would have made great obedience dogs, she just didn't know how to... "relate" to them in obedience terms. They titled in field work without a problem.

I liked them personally. I would never get a dog so small, but they had a good head on them.

That's Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pookie. Cute dogs, full of genetic health problems as a breed. I've never heard of that in Britt's.

I really like the Britt's. A neighbor has 2 that I have visited through their fence from time to time on walks. Lovely dogs. Active, smart, friendly. One of the breeds I looked into before I got Ike and then the rest of the crew. If I was ever in the market for a non-bully breed or non-mastiff, I'd take a Britt. But I doubt I'd ever want a non-bully or non-mastiff, so I get to admire them from afar,lol.

They are pretty common here in the south. I see them pretty often, I just have never asked a lot of questions.

I looked up their common health problems and the main one is hip dysplasia, and nothing else is really too common. From what I gathered, they are a relatively healthy breed. The ones I've met have been similar to bully breeds in the "I think every person is my long lost best friend" which I really love. I don't like dogs that are aloof. And they're a perfect size for me.

I probably wouldn't buy from a breeder. There are plenty in rescues down here. A bunch of people probably just got one because they are pretty and friendly and forget that working dogs want to work. So health testing would be hit or miss.

we had 4 in handling class last night (it was pretty cool, 4 brittanys and 4 amstaffs) and it was very hard for their owners to keep control of them

I actually don't know of too much dog hunting around me other than coonhunting and the OCCASIONAL hog hunter.

Yeah, Pookie, I only knew that because the hubby was hell bent on a Cavalier until we started researching genetic defects. Those poor dogs are actually worse off than EB's when it comes to debilitating health problems. Which is when I started looking at Britts. Because I figured if he liked the Cavaliers maybe a Britt would work. Then the research of dog breeds and genetic issues lead us to the bullies and somehow we ended up with the motley crew we have.

I grew up with one. They are a very active fun breed she lived way into her teens. Kelly was a great dog!

my uncle in Oklahoma owns 6 of em for bird/duck hunting and he said they were hard to control and hard to train but if you put the time and effort into them they turn into great dogs but always have at least a mild HA towards new people and we werent aloud near them until in our teens because they couldn't be trusted with kids

I have heard they are great hunting dogs, not pets, but the only one I have EVER met was HA and came after my son.
