Well thats nice it worked for you. I would never use it for my dog, to much risk of neck injuries using it. I will stick with my prong. That being said.. IF ITS WORKING.. USE IT. You are the that is seeing the difference. If it works.. WORK IT! ; p There are TONSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS* of threads on here about collars. Just search COLLARS.. and u'll see a shitload of posts!! |

I've tried that but sizes vary so much! What collars have you had luck with? Like I said, Bella is on the smaller side and is just between a medium and large. But it depends. :-) |

Can I ask if you have ever before attempted to actually teach your dog the correct way to walk on a leash? Or have you simply resorted to negatively reinforcing unwanted behavior? If you HAVE attempted to teach (not correct), what were your methods? Where do you believe you went wrong? How long did you attempt to teach your dog?
The reason I'm asking these things is because people use these tools like they're magic wands and still don't understand that their dogs have absolutely no idea what it really means to walk on a loose leash, where 'heel position' is, and why they should be there. |

I also use a head halter on my dog because, honestly, I suck at teaching heel. I think I cannot get my rate of reinforcement right and as a result he will heel for a short period but then lose focus. I really need to take a class so someone can verify and/or correct what I am doing wrong. I also need to figure out a way to relax him because he becomes aroused way to easy. I highly suggest at least trying to train a heel (even if you fail, it's worth a try) or if you can get to a class, that's even better!

We've done individual classes, the stop-and-go method, training with other dogs...etc, etc...I know they say no dog is "untrainable" but Bella definitely *didn't* know how to walk on a leash before the leader. I think in our case, it wasn't a "last resort" or "magic wand," because I really didn't think it would work! But now that it has, I'm convinced that Bella isn't hopeless. Every dog is different and we found what works for ours. (Finally.)
...by the way, Bella is very smart when it comes to other things. She's got a list of tricks, she's very polite when anyone new comes up to her, or rings the doorbell, and sits patiently for food and water, among other things. We were able to teach her very well in pretty much every other aspect than lose leash walking. :-) |
