Default possible first heat?? help?
I think violet may be having her first heat.. her vulva is a little swollen but the area aroung it is super swollen and starting to like engulf the actual vuvla.. is that normal?? i heard of them swelling but this is like extreme and been gettin bigger over the last week.. she will be 7 months old in Friday.. she isn't bleeding but sometimes has some stuff that kinda looks like discharge?? sound like heat or another problem? also if she is in heat my dad said when he breed he would put the females in little boys tightie whities with a unscented pad in them for the blood and put the tail through the under wear pee hole.. is this a good method besides keeping her in her kennel when inside?

Sounds like heat to me. It varies a bit from dog to dog but it sounds like it's going pretty normal. Your dad's idea sounds like a precursor to the doggie diapers they have now. If it worked for him years ago it will probably work for you now, but there are diapers available. I'm counting down the seconds until somebody asks you why she isn't spayed yet and tells you you should do it immediately after this heat and reminds you that there are many dogs in shelters now without homes.

reason not spayed is because after she is fully matured i want to see how she turns out before i decide the show and breed or spay and make into pet only route.. i know many people decide this as a puppy but i believe she should have a chance to fully develop and see how she turns out.. some dogs make horrid looking pups and end up looking great and vice versa.. reason i probably wont get questioned is because i have been asked 20 times before.

Even if you do decide to show her that does NOT mean you should breed her.
Not everyone that shows a dog is qualified to breed, and just because a dog is shown doesn't make them breeding quality. She needs to prove herself with champion and/or working titles, preferably both. And you will need to seek a breeder who is reputable and willing to mentor you while getting into breeding.

Just remember you could lose her in the process of breeding at any time... pups can die inside her, they could be still born, get stuck on the way out, she could require an emergency C section, she could have too many in her to handle, she could refuse to accepts them etc etc.

Picking a stud who is worthy of breeding also takes A LOT of time.

Who is she registered with, what breeder did you get her from, what does her lineage look like, etc? Even all of that can help you in your decision.

Sounds pretty normal. I was lucky that Shelby never had a heat before I had her spayed at 10 months - never once thought about breeding her as she doesn't have papers and is a nervy dog. But start taking her to some shows and getting her in the ring.

Oh also, for the bleeding, just use reg. diapers.
Go by her weight, I had a 8lb yorkie that went through heat and she wore a size 0 [5-9lbs] diaper through her heat, just had to cut a spot for her tail in them.

Easy Peasy!

she is registered UKC and waiting back from ABKC.. and i wouldnt breed unless she championed.. i know how it all works.. my dad was a breeder in the 80s and early 90s until he lost his first dog and with it his heart for dogs until recently

---------- Post added at 08:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:22 PM ----------

im afraid she will eat the diapers because if i remember right they have a stuffing in them.. diapers have no stuffing she can eat.. plus a 60 pound pup would need a big diaper most i see in stores show up until 50 pounds .. and honestly the reason i got the idea of showing was a breeder i know in my town always tells me how good looking she is and i should think about showing her if she turns out how we will think and one of his dogs just went grand champ so made me believe he knows somewhat of what she might make.. but i also know anything could happen.. either way in the end show dog and breed or pet dog and not breed i dont really care i wont love her any less

You should do a google search of dog diapers... they make cloth ones for bigger dogs that have a place for a feminine pad... super easy to do as well. She is still a pup so it'll be easier starting her on some kind of diaper now. My 8lb yorkie left tiny blood spots everywhere before we used a diaper, so a 60lb dog will probably be a li'l worse.

We found diapers for our female at Petco. They are denim, and have a place for a doggie pad to be attached. It has velcro to go around her waist and come is several different sizes. Did you female start to behave differently when she was getting ready to go in heat. We have a 6 1/2 month old, and she is starting to have some discharge when we check, but she is whiny and very clingy to me, more than my husband. She is just starting to eat less too.

Let's see, don't know if a female is in heat but is considering breeding. Let's see dad was a "breeder" (and i use that term loosely) but still don't know if dog is in heat. Let's see the chi is in heat but don't know if the dog is in heat. Let's see.....can anybody see anything stupid about this besides me?

Let's see the best part of the whole thread is "I know how it all works"

Throw some old blankets over your good furniture and don't let her on the bed unless you don't care about your blankets and sheets.

When Rita had her first heat with us she started bleeding in the middle of the night. Ruined a blanket that we had for more years than I care to remember and loved!

Tried regular diapers with a cut out for the tail. FAIL! When the diaper was cut it would shed its stuffing. On top of that, if Rita wasn't trying to take it off ti was falling off on it's own. Go with the actual made for dogs cloth diaper with the insert.

i didnt know if she was going into heat because of how it was acting all dogs are different my father who came by said she was but said she might also have a infection so she went to the vet to find out she was both in heat and had a yeast infection because of the way it swelled up.. so i actually did have a reason to be worried and confused.. as far as my dad being a breeder in the 80s and early 90s being used loosely yea a breeder as in went to shows had both champion and grand champion ADBA APBT
