Default What's Your Comeback?
We all deal with the anti-Pit Bull crowd all the time. We all hear the ignorant and misinformed snide remarks.

What do you say to people who make the 'Pit Bull/Bully Breed comments' towards your dog?

I usually try to kill em with kindness and smack em with facts.

I usually use one comeback that usually stumps people, it's a cold hard fact too.
"The APBT was actually bred not to be Aggresive towards people at all, because they were bred for Dog fighting and imagine trying to seperate two strong, Human Aggresive dogs."
It usually shuts them up xD

It's gotten to the point where I will just stare at someone with the most obvious "Do you really believe that shit?" expression if they are being rude about it. If they are being polite, I'll throw out some facts or try to make a conversation.

I've just stopped talking to people. It's pretty easy to tell if someone's going to be open and responsive to a conversation and when they're not. Usually, they're not. And at that point you say "have a lovely day" and go on your merry way. It's really just not worth the frustration, especially when someone's calling your dog a vicious killer as it's sitting politely by your side obeying your commands and wagging its tail at each passerby. I just can't be bothered by people's willful ignorance anymore.

It depends on how ignorant the person is being. If they seem receptive to learning,I will usually go the route that Rockerpit was talking about.

If they are just flat out ignorant and hostile ,I just shake my head and politely tell them that simply have no clue what they are talking about.

I never showed my dogs to anyone who didn't have to see them. In fact, nine out of ten times,I'd lie when asked about them;Breed, How many I have, sex, etc. The less people know, the better.

I can be very acerbic but agree with Chloesredboy. It depends on if I'm being asked or told. Probably the worst I have said is " no, no, no. My dog loves kids but can't eat a whole one." More usually I remind them that the most dangerous thing is always holding the leash not attached to it.

I don't care what people think. At least my dog is trained and friendly, unlike that anklebiter that just made me bleed.

Rocker thats a good one that I do use as well. I get rolled eyes or a passive 'i dont care what you say their vicious' type of look.
Teal I am beginning to move towards that whole 'get real' attitude.

A nice lady on another Pit forum was talking about her 'elevator comment' when some woman had her dog in the elevator when this nice lady with the Pit walked in and the other dog freaked. The owner made a remark and then the Pit owner just said "Dont give me that Pit Bull sh**!" and left the elevator with "@55ho**s".

Funny as hell.

Some of you are good about avoiding the situations, I kind of relish them a bit. I see an opportunity to really change someones mind. Who knows how many minds that person will change and so on.
As for Sandi, well, lol thats funny stuff.

Not exactly what I meant. Since I do take snow out in public and just showing them how well she behaves in public means more to me then words. I don't tell them much of anything unless they ask if she bites and if they can pet her. In that case its "No and No."

Most people you just have to laugh at. If they are dumb enough to HONESTLY believe all that crap.. they aren't going to hear you out anyway. Their little ankle biters are barking and jumping at the end of a flexi lead.. My dog is sitting beside me minding his own. That says it all.

I allow Slayer's actions to speak for themselves most times and demonstrate her gentleness to people who question it. Although some people really know how to piss me off and they get yelled/laughed at.

For me, it depends on what is said and how it is said.
I was walking Nick & Rosie one day and a lady passed us on the sidewalk and said 'are those that mean breed' I stopped, and had them sit, then said, that Rosie is a APBT and Nick is an Am. Bulldog and they were both rescues. The whole time, both dogs are smiling and wagging their tails. She looks at them and said 'they look very friendly' we chatted a bit more, and before she moved on, she was petting both dogs.

Probably the worst I've heard, is when I was walking out of the feedstore one day, a couple was walking out and I heard the lady mutter to her husband "I hope they are friendly" I didn't bother saying anything.

I had a gal at a Rally trial ask me a couple question about things she's heard. She said she hears about 'red nose' and 'Gotti' (I think that's what she said) and wasn't sure what that mean. I told her that red nose didn't mean anything, other than the dog had a red nose, but that some people think it means a different type of pit bull, and that Gotti was a blood line.
She was happy that I could explain that to her.

With Frankie, I kinda judge the people before saying what she is. One day in PetCo, there was a couple with a couple kids. Frankie LOVES kids and was all over them. They asked what she was, and I said shepherd mix. Other people I'll say she's a pit mix. Others will ask 'pit mix' or don't even think she's a mix. Then there was the one guy who told me she was a bull terrier.

One thing I would never do is introduce a dog as a 'Pit Bull' when people ask what breed it is. Say 'American Pit Bull Terrer'. It's less likely to freak people out, cause you never see a news headline that reads 'American Pit bull Terrier attack'. Or at least, I haven't.

I usually will just say Raj is a terrier mix and willow is a bully breed (or staffy mix depending on who I'm talking to)
