Regular salt can burn paws and skin, and it can cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested (dogs generally lick their paws after coming inside from snowy/icy areas).
Pet safe "salt" isn't actually salt at all, thus eliminating those threats. I don't know the chemistry behind it, but it's not real salt, and not as dangerous. Obviously, anything foreign can cause irritation to the skin and GI tract if ingested, but it's limited with pet-safe products. The most common one is "Safe Paw", I see it in pet stores all the time (MSDS report: http://www.safepaw.com/msds.pdf) There's also a pet safe salt sold at home depot that I buy, it has a wizard on it, I can't remember the name of it though. |

We use it, it is safe. The kind we get is blue, but I found this green kind at Home Depot:
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...&Ntpc=1&Ntpr=1 I think this is what we get from Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Morton-Saf...t-8lb/16213285 |
