When i first started taking Raj out on late night walks he would jump at everything and even give a slight warning growl to certain things or people. I was so persistant on figuring out what the hell he was so afraid of i took him out EVERY night for 2 weeks straight. By the end of the first week he became completely comfortable. I think he was just weirded out because it seemed like a new environment for him.

Honestly Diesel, I think your dog might have been sick. Maybe he licked some anti-freeze at the beginning of your walk or something.

Obviously, I have no idea what happened, but maybe you should cut him loose (like you said, oops, don't tell anyone) and see how he responds.

... or maybe Destino is right.

Leash laws usually apply to all breeds not just pit bulls

Um. Has some people thought, if a dog isn't ust to walking at night, it may startle them a bit?. Common sense. I took Serenity for her first hike, her hackles were up, she was tense and unsure for awhile. She settled down at some points but never fully relaxed. The 2nd time hiking, she did fine. Sunny did great on his first hike though. All dogs are different and will handle things differently. Also, my dogs are fine through the night as they've walked a bit later then normal. I would never walk through the night since it's more risky but at least I know my dogs will be fine with walking at night.

I always walk Romeo during the night and he's fine. Although once, it was around 10pm and normally Romeo pulls on his leash trying to get to all the smells but he was walking pretty much attached to my knee and his hackles were up. When I looked around I noticed a group of 3 suspicious looking men hanging out between some cars. When I walked by them they started to follow me and I think Romeo picked up on their odd behavior and my nervousness because he started growling at them and they backed off. That was only the second time he's ever growled at someone. Now that I think about it, I think the first time he growled might have been one of those same guys creeping around the edge of my sister's property... But yeah, that was the only time Romeo's acted out of character during an outing.

Not only do most cities have leash laws for all dogs, but even if they did not I wouldn't allow a dog off leash in anything but a secure, enclosed, area. Too much could happen! A dog could run off, get into a fight with another dog, decide to chase a squirrel/rabbit/cat and get hit by a car...

From your total posts, I bet he saw or smelled something that made him uneasy and it's not something that you come across every walk. Being a pitiful human without such keen vision and sense of smell, you may never know.

Reminds me of when Ike was a younger dog. We have giant trash cans for garbage and for recycling where I live. They have hinged lids on them and make a bit of noise when you close them. Ike was sort of afraid of the cans and of our old and noisy garage door. When I went outside at night with trash bags or items for recycling, he would follow very close to my side, tense and alert, because I think he was going to make sure the mean ol' trash cans or the big, scary, door didn't eat me.

He is long over those particular fears, but he still escorts me in and out after dark.

Thanks guys, all good stuff. Weird about the leash laws, most people keep dogs on leads in cities here but on the other hand its Damn common to train staffordshire bull Terriers to walk of the lead here. I can walk diesel of the lead perfectly but I don't anymore due to other peoples dog going for him

Something spooked him. No telling what.

Peanut gets walked at night pretty often and usually is doin her thing, sniffing, lookin around etc. The other night she had her tail tucked and couldn't get close enough. For one block. She was fine before and after, it's a quiet residential area so we think she saw or smelled something. Could have been a critter we didn't see - we've had skunks, armadillos and hogs wandering around at night in the neighborhood this summer.

What?? that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The dog was scared, how the fuck does that equate to it having eaten anti-freeze?

I used to walk Nitro at night all the time, every night. One night in September we were walking along our usual path when a guy came toward us out of the trees. He appeared quite suddenly and Nitro freaked right out; he ran like the devil was on his tail, and since he was on his leash *I* had to run like the devil was on MY tail! He didn't even stop to sniff at the fence where some other dogs live, like he usually does.

Ever since then he's been hyper-alert in the dark and very protective. If he's out in the yard for a pee and he hears someone walking down the alley, or any sort of noise outside he becomes very alert and will even bark.

So yeah, your dog isn't the only one who gets spooked at night. Mine was fine until that one incident. He's never been afraid of people and still isn't but if it's dark out and he's outside he's certainly more on guard than any other time.
