Default What do you do when you encounter an off leash dog?
This has happened to me quite a few times. My pit bull is a rescue he's fantastic but can be dog reactive...once again this evening we were walking in town, I saw a woman walking her dog about a block away and I crossed the street to avoid them we're working on remaining calm when we are in proximity of a pup we don't know...all of a sudden this little dog came running up to us growling and jumping up in my pit bull's face....I had my dog under control but couldn't control the little dog... my dog threw him a few times...finally the owner came up and got her dog-it was like slow motion-I'm guessing she was sitting inside a restaurant and didn't realize her dog had run out. I think he was fine and we kept walking...but what do I do? Kick the other dog? Again my dog wasn't growling or barking just annoyed. I'd just like to know what others do when you encounter this. Thanks

Unfortunately yes, sometimes your best option is to kick the other dog away. Especially in the case of a small dog because you can bet the owners will blame you if your dog defends itself unfortunately.

Keep working on that reactivity! Its awesome if you can get to the point where your dog will trust you to handle situations like that instead of taking things into his own paws.

I have no hesitations about kicking a dog before it gets to my dog. My dogs are counting on me to keep them safe, and I don't think it's fair that they be pestered by other dogs on our walks. I NEVER let another dog get within grabbing reach. You can kick at the dog, or a lot of times - especially with little dogs - if you yell at them and start walking towards them, they'll run off.

Yeah, I am in the business of protecting me and mine first, then worrying about everyone else. Being a Pit Bull owner, you know people are prejudiced and tend to blame you and your dog for any incidents. The best way to not be sued or have your dog confiscated and euthanized is to make sure he keeps his paws and mouth off of other dogs. If people are going to be irresponsible and fail to keep their dogs under their control then do what ya gotta do.

A good swift kick is much better than being eaten by an annoyed Pit Bull for the other dog and yours.

I kick them. Hard. And I'm usually wearing boots when I walk.

It is funny you posted this because that happened to me yesterday. But at the shelter, I just pulled Blu away and walked the other directions. Blu was good about it. I would push or kick the other dog away..

lol I just had to comment on this... the only footwear I own are steel toe hunting boots, or cowboy boots - either way, it can't feel good!

Whatever is necessary to protect your dog. If the owner of the other dog is nearby ... I DEMAND they get control of their dog and remind them of our city's leash law.

I've yet to encounter a little dog that wasn't scared off by yelling. The smallest dog I've had to kick away was a hunting spaniel (field spaniel/brittany mix about 35 pounds)... and really, he just seemed more like he had no manners. Good luck!

I'll try to yell at the dog first, and last resort use physical force. We had this one house where the dogs would get out through a gap in the fence. A pit and two chihuahua's isn't fun when walking three dogs. I'm trying not to step on the chihuahua's. my one dog got out of his collar due to the tussle and the female pit came after my pit and sadly I had to use my foot. I apologized to the owner and she was very apologetic as well. I hated having to use my foot to scare the dog away.

I'm a very observant person, just my nature, so if there's a dog within sight, my eyes are on it.

I'll put Hades in one hand slightly behind me and posture up, moving towards them in a confident brisk manner, yelling in a low tone to "Go away" or I might curse... just feels right, then if it gets close enough I'll whip it in the face with my lead or kick it. End of the line is mace which I carry now after a pair of Sibes came at us a few years back, I booted those dogs and whipped them in the face and they just kept coming. I don't know for sure but from the sounds of it Hades got a grab in when I was turned the other way backing the other dog up.

As long as the owner is sorry I usually don't ream them out. Honestly this stuff happens, but they better not bitch about me yelling or hitting their dog.
