The SPCA has collectivly killed more dogs and cats than any other organization in history and for a non profit organization they have amassed a great deal of wealth and increased wages drasticly. They are responsible in part for the attempted extermination of our breed, so I would rule them out.

I would take an add out in the local paper challanging other people ie. Vets, Pet stores etc... to match your donation and donate the sum collected to fight BSL.

That'd be good idea if anyone around here actually gave a shit about Pit Bulls and was aware there was BSL in place.

I agree though, I just donate items (collars/leads/etc) because I'm not gonna use them and the SPCA is the only shelter in town.

Either a local rescue that I knew fell in line with my beliefs, or a group that fights BSL, like the Endangered Breed Association or Stop BSL, something like that, but I'd have to do plenty of research before I gave just any organization the money.

SPCA is not an organization. The ASPCA is probably the organization that you're thinking of, but they have no affiliation with local SPCAs, such as my local one, the MDSPCA (Maryland SPCA). Now, not all SPCAs are equal (*cough*Louisiana*cough*), but most of them I'd say are just another shelter.

If it were me, I'd see how much discounted merchandise I could buy with the $1000 and spread the wealth, donate to all your 'good' local shelters. Or donate the money to a cause (not a shelter) that you really believe in.
