Default Lazy or bored?
Does anyone else's Pit Bull lay around during the day? We take our dog out to run and play. But when she is inside she has many toys to choose from and even bones. But she just lays around and sleeps. Is this normal? I am a first time Pit Bull owner and am learning their personalities quirks.

I think it's pretty normal to be lazy. My dog lays around all day and sleeps, but when we go outside, it's on! He jumps into action outside but will sleep all day if you let him.

With Roxie, I honestly think she's just conserving her energy... the second you even look like you're about to ask her if she wants to play outside or go for a run or walk, she is up and ready to bounce off the walls, lol.

So this is normal Pit Bull behavior then? I don't want her to be bored or anything. When we had a 2nd dog she would play with her inside the house. But when we try to play with her she doesn't want to.

How long have you had her? How old was she when you go her? She might still be going through her adjustment time.

Okay then she should be adjusted. She might just be lazy.

PS- I don't know if this ran through your mind or not so I'm going to put it out there in case you haven't yet read the stickies I posted in your other thread. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT, get another dog to be a companion to Sadie. Pit bull-type dogs do NOT need doggy friends. If she's not dog aggressive now, there is a good chance that she will be in the future. You don't want to run the risk of getting another dog to keep her company and then being forced to keep them separate for the remainder of their lives when her dog aggression "turns on".

That is wise advice. We were wondering if she was bored and needed a playmate, but will fore go that idea.

My dogs sleep all day and I have one that is the energizer bunny. She can go and go and go but when we are in the house she sleeps. I also agree with unoriginal. Don't ever get a companion for your dog. If you feel you are ready for another dog for YOURSELF great but don't expect them to get along.

Yes, these dogs do not need other "doggy friends". All they need is you. I think it's pretty normal. Mine lay around inside when they get the chance to come in, I think because it's cool and more relaxing. And are all go non stop, once they hit the door.

No problem, just glad to see that you're open to the knowledge that we have here.

I'm going to repost the stickies here so you can read up.

Odin loves sleeping. When I come home from work, he's usually upstairs in the bed and I have to go up to see him- he won't even run to the door some days. I think relaxing is the sign of a happy dog. When dogs are bored, they become destructive and anxious. You seem to have a well adjusted happy dog.

I am glad to know other Pits are like this as well. As I stated, I am a first time Pit owner and love the breed. I just hate all the bad reputations they have. They can be very lovable and affectionate. I am open to any advice I can get. I have trained Sadie with the idea of me being the leader and not over powering her with flipping her on her back as one of the stickies said. She knows many tricks and commands. Many people have said they wished I would of trained their dog, but I just tell them they too have a great dog...it just takes time and dedication.

My boy is pretty lazy. He will play a bit now and then, but even when he is outside with my lab for potty time he just does his business and then wants back inside where he finds a place to lay down and he relaxes (from 12 to 3 hes out cold because thats my sons nap time as it is his lol) My lab will grab a rope and shake it in his face trying to get him to play tug with her and he just stops turns and walks around her like shes the annoying little sister (shes 4 and hes 2). There are a few things that get him going though (bike rides, swimming, sand and being chased lol) but other than that most of the time he just wants to lay around and relax.

Slayer pulls that sleeping all day business...then she drags me around on our walks or runs laps of the back yard. Silly evil little dog i tire her out and then she just sleeps all the energy back up and unloads again.

My pup Cookie is 4 months, 3 wks old and can be a rather lazy pup, well at least when compared to what I've heard others say about this breed being a 'high energy' breed, so far Cookie is at best 'medium energy'.

That is one of the great things about Jake. He's ready to rock and roll when we are, but if we are just kicking back and nothing going on, he's perfectly content to just hang out too. Now if I could just get my 6 year old Rottweiler to do that. I swear she is a border collie in Rottie clothing!
