Default What Would You Do?
So here's a question for you guys.

I live in a little one bedroom apartment in the ghetto...It's 600 a month for this apartment and it's trashed...it was when we moved in.
Since moving in we have had no light in one of the rooms, The bathtub leaks..there is a hole in the ceiling that looks straight up into the people upstairs bathroom...The neighbors are all nice however I keep having a problem with one of them snooping through my trash and caught him the other day stopping the washing machines (they are right out our kitchen door) to pull out a pair of my under clothes. To top all that off my apartment window was broken out today and the apartment was broken in to...whoever it was let my dog out and i Think she run them off. The only reason we moved into this place was because the landlord was okay with all 4 dogs.

Well today I found the perfect place 675 a month all bills paid +cable tv. Big yard and in a nice part of town He is okay with only 3 dogs however :/, which means to move I would have to get rid of a dog. The only dog I would be willing to part with is Gauge my 1 yr old deaf pit mix. He has a lot of problems and keeps getting more as he grows older...He has Separation Anxiety to the point of vomiting and defecating when left alone, he is currently on prozac which only seems to take the edge off. He is a MAJOR barker when left alone he barks...if it's just in the other room. He has allergies both environmental and food as well as cronic ear infections. If i had to rehome him and could not find someone willing to take on these problems I would consider euthanasia..which sadly would more them likely would be what would happen.

So what would you guys do if it was the choice between a safe home, non-trashed House or keeping a dog that is going to be a problem all his life?

If i moved or now?

If I moved I would try to rehome him or euthnization....I know it's terrible bit I could not leave him at a shelter kill or no-kill knowing his adoption chances are slim.

Hard to say as it is such a personal decision. Can ''keep looking for a place'' be added to the list of options?

IMO, if having the new place is what made you consider putting him down in the first place, then no. If he truly does have a poor quality of life that cannot be improved, then yes. I think most people here would consider having a dog with poor quality of life PTS regardless of if you're allowed to have him in the new place or not.

We've been looking for over six months. This is the 1st place I've found that I can afford that would still allow me to keep on one other pit.

ADDED:

I've always considered having Gauge PTS due to his mental/ health problems but with LOTS of cash and constant training and walking I've been able to manage his problem I just worry no one else would go to those lengths?

Honestly, it's your choice.
No one here can tell you what you should do, the best we can do is tell you what we would do in your shoes according to what you've posted.

That said, in my case, no. I would not have the dog put down. For nearly two years we have been living in the same shitty place in a shitty neighborhood, not even gonna list what's wrong with this house and neighborhood. We can't move simply because there are very few places within our price range that allow dogs and the ones that do don't allow Pit Bull type dogs. If one of my dogs had issues like you described and I was able to manage them enough for them to still enjoy life, I simply couldn't do it. Again, that's just me. I don't know your whole situation, you or your dog so really what I say is irrelevant anyway.

Sometimes you have to cull for personal reasons. When you have alot of dogs you sometimes have to weigh those more practical/financial/quality of life issues a little differently than someone with say one single dog that has dibs on all the resouces. lol I know with my girl Scarling, we are pretty well at the point of weighing the worth of a financial investment into a dog that is not likely to succeed at life just due to shitty temperament. Now if she was my only dog, I'd probably veiw that differently.

Honestly, I'd put all my dogs down before I'd consider passing them on to someone else who might wind up giving them a horrible life. I'd rather they left the earth while happy. My dogs live and die by my hand. I don't envy your decision. I'm at a similar point myself and it's agony trying to know what to do. I think I'm coming to the point of realizing that OUR quality of life counts, too. Living with a dog with issues is no cake walk from financial, to emotional.... they can be a heavy burden.

Lets not beat around the bush. Euthanization seems like the best option here in this situation.

I would put Gage down. If you stay where you are you all could be at risk(or are at risk). Poor Gage is the type of unstable dog I would have put down if he came into my rescue. Who's gonna want him? Nobody.... The general public can not deal with his handicaps, most people who could deal, already have problem dogs. Better dead by your loving hand then... well like Zoe said. Have a Gage day, feed him some chicken nuggets and put him to sleep.

As others have said, you have to weigh your quality of life, the other dogs quality of life and Gauges quality of life. You also have to factor in safety, expense and the details I can't imagine of caring for a mentally ill dog.

I don't see staying where you are as a real option considering the condition of the house and the freaky underwear stealing neighbor. Living under that kind of stress for an extended period of time isn't healthy for you mentally and that passes off to the dogs. Plus, since the place was broken into and a dog was let out it is entirely possible staying there is risking the lives of your dogs because any one or all of them could be stolen or simply turned loose in a future break in.

The way I see it, you can rehome him, put him down or accept the burden of his care for the rest of his life and rehome a different dog who has a chance of getting a permanent home and living a good life. Considering everything you have said and how difficult I imagine the situation to be, I would probably euthanize him. Course, I am not in that situation so I can only speculate as to what I would do. Much easier than actually having to make a decision and do it.

Billy stated his opinion and cut through all the BS as he sees it and got straight to the point. Perfectly intelligent.

As usual, Zoe hit the nail on the head. Youve got a tough choice ahead. I will always put my well being before my dogs, so having him PTS is probably what I would do. Hugs to you.

Edited to add.. The OP came here looking for opinions, ALL opinions are welcome. Please dont insult other members for speaking what they think about the situation. Thanks!

Agreed, I think you have to look at his quality of life overall. Have the management and drugs truly helped? Its a tough decision for sure, but I've found the right choice is rarely easy.

And living in the ghetto can't be helping his issues honestly. I say this as someone who also lives in the ghetto and also has a dog (foster no less, oi) with anxiety issues. Its rough because she' s such an awesome dog aside from the anxiety. Luckily the two main disruptive neighbors of mine both are in jail currently. So that helps.
