Default LOST DOG: What to do if you lose your dog
First of all CALM DOWN! Getting upset and just losing it wont help anyone especially not your dog.

Things to immediately do:

Think like a dog is the main thing. If a dog is scared usually it will run in a straight line just to get away, if it is chasing something it would likely go wherever the thing it was chasing would, if your dog is food motivated or likes a particular spot go that direction.

Use everyone around you! Ask any and everyone, literally everyone is valuable and there is nothing to be ashamed of to ask people. If it is a populated area ask ANY employee that would be outside when you lost your dog: parking attendants, hostesses, valet, construction workers. ALWAYS HAVE A PICTURE OF YOUR DOG ON YOUR PHONE!

Ask the nearest police officer! If there is a report of a stray dog they would get it first.

This should at least get you a general area where the dog went. If you have not found your dog yet:

Alert your microchip company they can usually send out alerts to other members who have the microchip, vets, shelters, etc.

Post on craigslist- in both the lost/found section and pets section. Pet lovers usually read this section and will get the word out to their friends who have dogs. Make sure you include a reward, phone number, photo, spayed/neutered, etc. Make sure you mention any issues the dog has (allergies, fear, etc)

Flyer your friggen face off! Make sure you get intersections where people can see the picture from their car (have the photo the biggest part of the flyer- reward info also large), paper the hell out of everything.

Have a picture printed and your phone number on tons of tiny slips- Hand them out to everyone in the area.. EVERYONE, who cares if they didnt see her they may later. Give them to tour bus drivers, pedicabs, employees of local restaurants, cops, train employees, construction workers, etc. ANYONE who works outside or within eye shot of the window could help you.

Fax- all local vets, ACO (the shelters NOT the call line, ask the number to the holding shelter), shelters, pet stores, etc.

Go on petfinder.com and find all of your local rescue groups and email them you would not believe what a big network people have make sure you send them a copy of the flyer

COME HERE! Post away- PBC may be a harsh crowd sometimes but we are all dog lovers and know how much it hurts to lose a dog so we are here to help in any way we can!

GO TO THE SHELTERS! If they claim to not have your dog demand to see what dogs they have, be nice but be aggressive. They had my dog for a day after they were sent a photo, called with a description by local shelters, and called by me THREE TIMES to see if my dog was there.

Take out ads in the local paper Send them a copy of your flyer and try to speak with someone directly to find out how to get it printed, if you have to pay to get an advertising space it is worth getting your dog back.

Lastly dont forget to have hope, dogs dont vanish into thin air your dog is out there and you would not believe how willing people are to help. If it wasnt for people helping me I would never have found Irie.
