Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
Gator is the pup in my avatar, he is 10 weeks old and is American Pitbull Terrier. He has Razor's Edge and Greyline bloodlines so he is a heavier built boy. He is UKC registered and both parents are also ADBA registered although at this point, I havn't sent anything in for ADBA. Honestly, every pit that I've owned in the past has had cropped ears, I didn't think twice about it BUT I haven't had a puppy in 10 years and now I will have to drive 6 hours to get a vet that does them on a regular basis. None of the vets in my area do it so it just made me question myself and my motivation behind wanting them done...Right now he has nice ears but I know that he would look amazing with them done. |

if you like them cropped, then crop them, who cares what someone elses opinion is, they arent feeding the dog.
also.. Hate to be the one to break it to you, your dog is not an American Pitbull Terrier, its an AMBully.. sorry but it sounds like the person you got the dog from lied to you about what breed of dog they were selling you. |

Green Machine~ I asked the breeder the same thing! I'm love him just the same but I saw the pedigree for my pups mother and father and they are both registered as APBT...I just dont' understand how I'm not supposed to say APBT if that's how he's registered...I've been reading some other threads on this issue but but now I feel more confused that when I started.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Do you plan on showing him in conformation? If not, I'd keep his ears if I were you. |

That 's how it goes most times. The bloodlines are very indicative of breed/type,depending on how you look at it.
The Bully now has it's own kennel club,is recognized by a few others and is trying to gain acceptance as a breed.More of the reputable breeders/owners are switching their dogs over to Bully registry only.Which I think is the right approach. In the words of the President of Razors Edge and the man many cite as the creator/founder of the breed: RAZORSEDGE INC. Fredericksburg.com - Come see our gentle 'bullies,' unfairly savaged by a currish editorial American Bully Kennel Club: The American Bully Registry |

Katrina, A dog Registry is a buisness, just that. They arent the breed police, its a result of people who breed these mixed breed dogs and getting them registered. Im not saying it to be mean but it is what it is. The ambully was created in the early 80s as a new breed in of itself. that is the type of dog you have.

you will most likely want to register your dog with a registery that recognizes the breed rather than calling it something it isnt.
check about the abkc...then start attending bully shows. Of course because your dog is reg with some registeries as an APBT, you technically could show in the american pitbull terrier shows, but it wouldnt do you any good. because your dogs conformation and build is alot different than an APBT is. |

im pretty sure this forum is a place for all bully breeds, they even have a section specifically for ambullies.
those pics of the parents are definately AMBullies. the American Pitbull Terrier is bred and built to be an athletic dog. NO offence to those pictures you posted but I dont see those dogs being able to run a marathon. here is a good idea of what an APBT should be built like structure wise. |

First, what look do you personally prefer? If you like the cropped ears, I say go for it! Whether you plan to show or not I would say that you should do what you prefer and don't feel guilty about it. It is your dog. If you plan to show in the UKC ring, they probably prefer cropped, though not a requirement. See how your dog matures out, if he comes out not too overdone, I say go for it and show him in the UKC ring. Go to a local UKC show and see what type of dogs are in the ring.
Also the picture of what greenmachine posted of Lil Bit is a nice example of what an APBT is (even though I personally am not a big fan of her head)but the truth is the UKC dogs being shown do not usually look like her. So go out and do your own research. ![]() |
