I co-own Judge with his breeder as well as another dog. I have iron-clad contracts for both dogs. I do NOT want a co-own to ruin my relationship with a really good friend. She retained breeding rights on him providing he proves himself breed worthy-which he has done- Judge lives with me. The other dog, is a female that I have breeding rights to one litter on pending titling her for the breeder. She lives with the breeder. I'm willing with my upcoming litter to place a working puppy on a co-own if someone was that interested in one of them but didn't have the money.

I'm co-owning Indie with her breeder. With her UKC papers, The breeder and I are both on there, and its an "and" ownership thing, so it would require both our signatures to sell or breed her. (well, breed her and be able to register the pups) Also, the contract states that we will co-own her until she is health tested, and she has 2 titles. At that point, she gets entirely signed over to me.. though on her first breeding, the breeder gets second pick on a puppy. Simple, and it has apparently worked out with other puppy buyers, which I checked out before jumping in. Also, with all her male puppies, she always retains breeding rights to them. However, with the pet quality ones, she o.k.s them being neutered.

I co-own several of my dogs, which include: 2 of my APBTs, my 2 SBT, my JRT, and my PAT.
All of them were given to me by their breeders with the agreement that if I can't or decide not to keep them, they will be offered back to the breeder first.
Also, for the females, the breeder gets 2 pups (APBTs) or all of the pups (PAT), from their first litter. For the males, the breeder gets 1 pup (SBTs) from the first breeding or use as stud for one breeding (JRT).

I've really never worked in a co-own type situation, but after reading about a past experience you have had, I can understand why you are researching the idea. My husband used to co-own a dog with another man, but he gave up his half of the dog in exchange for a pup from a future litter, as the guy and that dog are in Florida, and it's just too much of a hassle for us to try to use him for breeding or anything. We have also given and sold dogs, but not so much on a co-own, but on an agreement that we may want a pup from them in the future. I suppose we shall have to see how that all plays out. My husband more or less keeps up with that stuff than I do (haha, we each have our own "duties" when it comes to our dogs) I have heard of nightmares coming from both co-own and other situations, though, unfortunately, I think the right person can find a loop hole or a way to cause problems regardless to what you do.

The deal Ultimate k9 has going on with their dogs doesn't sound all that bad.

Default Co-own?
Well, it is getting time, the wees are about to go to their new homes. Well, one of them anyway. As of right now we're keeping 3 out of the 4 (my husband doesn't know yet - trust me, he'll freak. Merry Christmas honey! )

Anyway, the one I'm wanting to place I want to do on a co-own. Has anyone here done a co-own? How were the results? Good? Bad? Ugly? Anyone have a sample of any co-own contracts?

Any advice would be wonderful!

Happy holidays!

i somewhat do a co-own, (more of a if i cant keep the dog, she goes back to him, and if she proves breeding worthy, she goes back to his yard for a breeding and we go from there for pup agreements) so far im fine with it. dont have any issues. we have a verbal agreement as we both know eachother to not do something stupid.

I've gotten screwed over a few times on verbal agreements by people I "thought" were good as gold. I have since learned there are no (real) friends in bulldogs. Friends are friends, but business is business if you know what I mean.

I do a co-own with Arson and Southern Inferno, and it's pretty open. Really in the beginning it was an "if he doesn't work out" kinda thing. He is a show/working contract, and he retains breeding rights should he prove worthy, and he decides to breed him. Arson was a dog he was planning on keeping so this just helps him to expand his yard, without having to keep a million dogs and also helps his dogs get the attention they deserve...If Arson becomes a champion then he becomes our dog, but like I said we have a pretty open relationship with Dave, so so far it has been a good experience.

My friend owns, shows, and breeds boxers. Currently, she owns 1 boxer and co-owns another. The owned boxer is a male and the co-owned is a female. Her breeder wants to breed the female with the male, and wants to charge her a stud fee, even though she bred the male (not technically the breeder's dog anymore, but she did breed him originally).
It's confusing and convoluted, and their 'puppy arrangement' is all screwed up also. I don't know. From her experience, co-owning sounds complicated and annoying. If you do do it, make sure everything is in writing, and is crystal crystal clear.

well i also have paperwork where only my name is signed as the only owner so i dont really mind. its more of an agreement if I choose to do anything, which i wont unless I feel shes worthy, and if not, i will fix her, which he also agreed that should be done, so i mean theres not much to it for me, i guess it would be different if you got some a-hole who decided to lie to you about it

I just want to retain breeding rights, make sure the dog is not abused, sold out from under me & if it is of quality it is exhibited in local shows (I don't expect a person to drive all over every hill & dale to show). It pee's me off though as I do not charge much for any dog I place on a co-own & I have had people then turn around & sell the dog for way more than they got it for. I placed a dog with a fellow once for free & he turned around & sold it for $1000! I didn't even know she was off his yard until the guy he sold her to contacted me wanting to know about her ancestors. Needless to say, I was not thrilled.
