Kong? My bully will destroy a red Kong in a minute and a black one in 10. I can't use them as a chew toy with him. I have to use a Nylabone or Goughnuts. A Nylabone will last him a month or so and the Goughnuts will last a few as long as I take it from him occasionally. He destroyed a Goughnuts stick pretty fast, but the donut is lasting ok. Still need to send that stick back for a replacement.

Default Is this a good kong idea
Okay so I have a friend that gives her Boxer baby cereal in the Kong. She says she just mixes it with water puts it in the kong and freezes it.

She says its a cheap and good way to keep her dog occupied. Now I see no issue with the infant rice cereal but I do wonder about the others she uses.

This is a list of the cereals she uses:

Single Grain Oatmeal
Rice Cereal
Mixed Grain
Barley
Rice Cereal with Bananas.

Are all those safe? If not I think she needs to know. The reason I ask is because her dog has food allergies so she feeds grain free but she is putting these different types of cereal in there. So the dog is still getting grain. Seems counter productive. She has another dog without allergies. If it is safe do you think this would be a good kong filler.

I'm seriously considering trying the rice cereal in my dogs kong, what do you think?

Really, dampened dog food with a few "extras" mixed in is easy and works really well too. Just use it in place of some of their meal.

To keep it simple, I put a few "extras" in the DRY dog food, put the dry dog food into the kong, rinse it with water inside of the kong. Leave it out for a half hours so the food "swells" a bit, then freeze it. Really easy and no extra money.

I agree, it seems weird to feed your dog grains when you're... trying NOT to feed your dog grains LOL. But I don't know anything about grains really, maybe dogs are only allergic to certain kinds? The rice cereal sounds fine though.

Yeah that just kind of threw me off a bit. I mean I would think the rice cereal would be fine because when a dog gets sick, what do you usually feed them, rice. I thought I might give it a try, though I doubt she would take her kong, she hates rice.
But I was a little concerned that she is feeding a grain free food because of her dogs allergies yet she is stuffing kongs full of grain daily.

While it probably wouldn't hurt a dog without allergies, she is kinda canceling out the grain free kibble by feeding it.

I mix kibble, mashed banana, some peanut butter and a crushed Glucosamine pill and fill Bella's, then freeze over night. You could always add some raw carrots, small bites of apple, a few blueberries, some pumpkin, or frozen green beans and then freeze it.

I've read that a lot of baby foods have onion powder and that is an ingredient you want to avoid.

If her dog has grain sensitivies wtf is she doing feeding it cheap cereal full of grain?

There is so much better stuff out there to stuff kongs with!
Canned grain free for one... then just freeze.
Grain free kibble!!
Peanut butter.
Hamburger or other ground meat, then freeze.
Plain low fat yoghurt or cottage cheese could be frozen in it. If the dog isn't lactose intolerant of course.

If you do give peanut butter to a dog, how do you ensure he doesn't choke on it like a baby would? (not sure whether to use ensure or insure)

Give the dog creamy PB if you are worried about it choking on the peanuts in chunky PB

I fill the kong with kibble and then let it soak in low sodium chicken broth and hot water. Peanut butter inside the kong makes for nasty cleanup, sometimes even the dishwasher can't get it all out and its just gross lol. So I only use the peanut butter to clog the bottom hole (chunky is good for this, because the peanut pieces help to clog that hole a little better) and to cover the top once I'm done filling it. Sometimes I add in a bit of cheese or some of his favorite dog treats, esp the Charlee Bear ones, since they are only 3 calories per biscuit.

I wouldn't put grain in my kong. I don't think it's only an allergy, but I've also read that dogs just can't really digest grain well. It isn't a natural food they'd eat in the wild. (But I guess peanut butter, and yogurt isn't really, either :P)

I put peanut butter in our kong with either carrots or apples. Then I freeze. I also switch and use plain yogurt and freeze that as well. Sometimes I put his kibble in there as well.

I'm looking for other stuff that is a good filler and good to freeze.

Yeah I do the peanut butter (I get it at the store and crush it there, so there is nothing in it but peanuts) or I use the plain non fat yogurt. And mix her kibble in with it with peices of her peanut butter cookie or carrots. Sometimes I put bananas in it.

But I tell you that peanut butter is some nasty stuff and hard to clean if the dog doesn't get it all. Luckily Sasha is a vacuum and tends to clean her plate whether its her food bowl or her kong.

The only time I've had issues with peanut butter or anything is when Dylan was eating his kong, but I wasn't paying attention and it ended up under the couch... then I found it two weeks later with moldy, black carrots and yogurt. THAT was gross, yuck!
