Luckily, I haven't had to go anywhere where I was gone overnight and leave no one at home with them. I had to go on a work convention in August, but they stayed home with the rest of the family (since it was a work conference, I went solo). Vacations consist of staying home, which is perfectly fine with me because I don't like leaving the dogs, and I don't care much to be around a bunch of strangers, so I'm fine with stay-cations at home. Living in the country, it's a vacation to just stay home and not have to go into town.
![]() If I had to leave them for a day or so, I would probably have my daughter watch them... not ideal as I know she wouldn't be home much, but I trust very few people to let them in and out with the correct crate/rotate routine that we have , and I constantly worry that people wouldn't be as careful to make sure that none of them got loose outside the fence or outside with the wrong dog. At least I can trust my daughter to make sure the right dog goes out with the right match. Otherwise, I would just stay home, but being as I'm a home body, that's perfectly fine with me. ![]() |

If I'm going to be out of town for longer than I like to leave my dogs, I have a neighbour (who also has an APBT) who will come let them out, we do the same for him when needed. If it's a matter of days then my Mom comes and stays here with them. She is not a big fan of dogs, but she knows mine and knows the schedule and rules so they make out just fine. Nyx & Annie are too big of a handful for my mom so if it is longer than 2 days those two go to a boarding kennel. The only reason the boarding kennel is an option is because I have worked at this exact one and know the staff and procedures inside and out. I know the dogs are safe, confined, well cared for and never allowed to be in situations they shouldn't be. Yes it's pricy, but that's a responsiblilty I took on. If I can afford to go on a trip or holiday it means I have enough $ for any boarding fees needed. It's a bit irresponsible in my opinion to plan something and not have a plan for your dogs in place. (Now, I don't know if this is what has happened, don't get me wrong.) I just think that it's a big risk to leave your dogs with someone not trustworthy or at a kennel you don't know. It's not something I'd do.

no i did have a place for them to stay. i was going to leave them at the boarding facility where i know the owner. but the prices have gone up drastically and i just found out this morning so now i dont know what to do because leaving my dogs at the kennel would cost me about a grand. so i am exploring all of my options before i make a decision to what i will do.. so no its not irresonible.. things happen |

We take ours with us whenever we can. They used to ride across country when my fiance drove truck. They ate that stuff up!
If not, my mom...although I don't think she wants to watch them anymore since she LET Java get out and lost her for about an hour. I'm not sure I want her to either. Last choice is work. It's 2 bucks a day per dog. It's not anywhere like the kennels I hear about from other people. Ours is very clean and I know my manager would let the dogs out for a little to stretch their legs. Although, they wouldn't get as much attention as they would at my parents. |

I take them with me. If I can't for some strange odd, weird stupid reason, then Judge's breeder, boards at my vet or my TD takes him and Red is watched by my family.
I do NOT trust ANYONE(meaning friends and such) with Judge or Red after having left them with a dog sitter when I came home one year. It was horrible, he was allowed to run off lead after I specifically asked that he NOT be and I was told when I got back that he ran across the road and almost got hit by a car. Red was chained up in the cold, something that she is NOT used to at all and had ligature marks around her leg from the chain. Yeah...Thanks for watching my dogs so well.... After that, They only get left with a very very very select few. My family isn't responsible enough to handle Judge so the TD and his breeder do or I board him at the vet. ---------- Post added at 12:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 AM ---------- |

What do you do with your dog when you go out of town? Boarding? Pet sitters? Friend/Family? If there was absolutely no way that I could possibly take him with me, and I had to go.... there are very few people that I would trust aside from my older sister. (she is a very responsible dog owner and I know she would do very well, however she doesn't live in this province!) It would have to be someone who has owned an APBT before and has a good record, that is for sure! ![]() __ On a side note to this thread I would like to mention, it has been a while since I thought of this but we could start a thread that was like "Dog Sitter Thread" and all people of the forum who may be willing to dog sit could post their info such as their locations when/how long they are willing to do so and all of the other details then work it out from there w/ the other member, yknow. Something like this: Name Location Date/Time available other details It could be a regulated easy to read fill out form or something. Obviously it would be ones own judgement call to decide whether or not they trust the sitter. I know there are many on here that I can safely say I would trust. I don't know, I have thought of that for a while... could be useful. ![]() |

Freida goes to a boarding kennel. I hate dropping her off there, but the people seem really excited to see her when I drop her off and she seems okay when I pick her up. It is really expensive $32 a day with 3 potty breaks!
I don't know anyone here that I would trust with my dogs, and personally, I'd rather take her to a kennel where (hopefully) she's under constant supervison than have a dog sitter come 3 times a day and leave her alone for the rest of the time. She's stayed there about 5 times, the place seems popular. I do usually buy packages for extras and I always worry that they just charge you and don't actually give her the kong or extra play time... |

I travel with my dogs. Usually if I can not take them then the husband stays home with them. Last time I took a real vacation with no dogs was 6 yrs ago and I had an SUPER friend who watched them for me. I have since moved though.
I do have 1 friend I would trust with my dogs now but have not had to ask her to come watch them as of yet. |

We take ours with us, when I was fostering a weimaraner, there were a few people I trusted to watch him when we went out of town to dog shows, but there were a couple even he had to come with to (some of ya met the dumb oaf, lmao) We absolutely do not trust boarding kennels. I actually personally know someone whose dog was killed due to the negligence of a boarding kennel. Also, most boarding kennels around here will not except unaltered dogs. If we absolutely had to go somewhere and leave our dogs, I don't know what we'd do, were we live currently, there really isn't anyone I trust to watch the bulldogs, because they are a lot of work, and it isn't something to take lightly. On mistake by someone and we may end up with a dead or seriously injured dog.

In the past (uhhh, 2 months that I've had her, heh) I have had to leave three times, and she stayed with a friend. In the future, I'll probably board her, or have my parents take her, because my friend owns a pit bull as well and she came back with bites last time
![]() That's only, of course, if I can't drive. She's coming to Houston with me this weekend and next month she'll be going on a 18 hour car ride with me up north. Can't leave her butt alone for that! My big problem is that I go overseas about once a year for a month. It was one of the reasons why I waited so long to get a dog, but I finally caved to my doggie desires. I imagine for that she will do a combo of kenneling (a good family friend runs a great one) and staying with my parents. And I, of course, will miss her like crazy. God, it's bad enough when it was just missing my cat. ![]() |

Most of the time Sasha goes with us. If she doesn't there is a great boarding facility/pet resort down the road from us that I leave her with. I trust the people that run it and they are really good with her. Sasha actually is happy to go there tail wagging, doesn't care that we leave. Comes home tail wagging.
Back when we boarded her at the vet she would fight them going back, she wouldn't eat and would whine the whole time I understand. And she would come home being a nervous wreck for days and has the runs. At this place she is totally comfortable. Comes home totally normal. I think she actually enjoys going. They have indoor/outdoor runs. Each run has a fenced in yard to it that the dog is allowed out 3 or 4 times a day. For an extra dollar they get an hour long walk a day. For an extra 4 dollars they get a bath before they come home. Plus they only keep a few dogs at a time so the dogs get ample attention. So at $25 dollars a day plus the walk and the bath. Its totally worth it. If she didn't seem comfortable with it, I wouldn't leave her there. Most of the time she just travels with us, but if she can't come she goes there. |

I wish I could leave Peyton with my parents. But his seperation anxiety goes completely out of control at their house for some reason when he has to stay the night without me (he lives at my boyfriend's house normally, so he doesn't sleep at my paren'ts house ever unless I'm staying overnight there too) and he pukes, poops, barks, whines, cries, paces and usually ends up sitting in their shower, for some dumb reason. No idea why he does it, he goes over there ALL the time and loves my family to pieces. I often thought about, if someone slept with him in my bedroom would it work, but haven't had a chance to test that theory out yet.
So, we take him to a boarding kennel. It's a private "hotel" lol, at $33 a day but the facility is pretty darn nice, the people are super friendly and Peyton always comes home happy and tired! So as long as he's happy comin home with no problems or issues, he'll keep goin back. ![]() |

I've boarded Ruby once - and she lost 1/4 of her fur ans about 5 lbs!!! We've lucked out so far in having a neighbor/friend who can stay here with Ruby - but she has freakout episodes from time to time and I worry that will happen while she has care of Ruby. Otherwise, we are screwed - don't know anyone. We do have a newish friend and her hubby down the street that have offered and in a pinch, I'd have htem pop in to check on Ruby like a pet sitter. However, I am going to TG out of town with my mom alone this year and DH will stay home with the Ruby....... I really wish we had a better network of friends to dogsit as needed, which isn't frequent.

I'm very much a homebody, but on the rare occasions I am away, I board my kids with my vet. They know my dogs very well and they love the vet and his techs. I don't have family close and no one else I really trust with them. It's very expensive since I have 6 dogs, but it's the only option for me that I trust. They all do well boarding except for one. He won't eat at all, so the vet keeps him in an area of his office where he can keep an eye on him. I don't stay away longer than 3 or 4 days, but the lil dude starves himself till I come back.
