Default that doggy in the mirror
just wondering if I am the only one

My girl LOVES other dogs, to her every dog is a potential play mate! BUT she has serious issues with the dog that lives in the mirror. When we took her on a tour of our new place she trotted into the master bedroom (which has 2 full length mirrors on the closet doors) saw a beautiful black brindle pit bull pup in front of herself and spazzed out with a spree of barking( not aggressive). I think it may have just caught her off guard and honestly i wish I had caught it on tape. I dont mind her barking at herself and in fact a mirror was how i first started working on her fear based aggression ( since at first i was NOT comfortable trying her out with an actual dog ) I am just curious if any of your dogs have issues with the dogs that live in the mirror and if they do what do you think of it?

The first time my dog saw herself in a mirror, she completely spazzed out and was growling and trying to swat the mirror It was really embarrassing because we were in a clothing store and my BF had to take her outside. No one got freaked out though because we started laughing and I said, "oh! that's the first time she's seen herself." She hasn't shown any DA yet (she's a little over 2 now) so I'm still not sure why it set her off. Every time after that first occasion, she's been fine in front of mirrors.

Odie gets a bit spazzy with the sliding back door at night when there's a reflection. He thinks someones outside, so he has to go outside and check to make sure were safe. For some reason, whenever we get a new neighbor on the one side, they're not the best people so I'm glad he checks.

Sophie loved the mirror when she was little she use to play with herself and strut her stuff. She was totally funny and I wish I had captured those moments. Now that she is older she could care less about the mirror.
I have tryed Boo infront of the mirror but he doesn't get it. He has no idea what e is looking at.
However he does not like the TV reflection on our back door. He thinks someone is trying to get in.

I am glad you brought this up. I know Boo and Sophie are different but I don't understand how she can see her self or even see the TV and watches it while he is totally aloff to all those things. The different personalities entrigue me.

Mollie used to do that too when she was little... so far Bella hasn't seen herself in the mirror.. yet!

It was cute when they were little and barked at themselves though.

Buffy will just walk by a mirror and pay zero attention.

Spanky on the other hand is such a silly billy. He is always doing silly, quirkey things that makes me lol and shake my head. In my office I have a couch and right behind the couch is a huge mirror maybe 5x6) with a fancy frame around it. He will jump up on the couch (I keep a blankie on the couch when I have no clients there so there is no dog hair on it) he will turn towards the mirror, put his front paws on the back top of the couch 2 hold himself up and stare at himself. He will then start licking the mirror. Like he is looking into the mirror and saying, "Mommy, who is that handsome devil staring back at me?" I will be in my office on my laptop working and there he is, licking the mirror staring at himself, making faces in the mirror. But then again this is a dog that will lick the walls (I am so not kidding). APBT's are so full of personality. When I watch them it makes my LOL 2 myself so much.

Kahula when she first saw herself went into protective mod. She stood there staring at it with her hair on her back standing up, with a little low growl.

Murphy see's himself in my tv (i don't have any mirrors at a level that they can see themselves in it), and thinks the dog that lives in there (when it is off) is challenging him. It is absolutely hilarious! He will start with this low growl, and then raise the challenge tail, then hackle up, then give his "mean" puppy bark, and the whole time I'm just dying laughing! Here's a pic of it!

Saw this in another thread. This is so funny!! Is this a pit bull trait? My dog used to go nuts, running back and forth, barking at herself and seeing me in the mirror too!! Sometimes she would just sit and growl with her ears perked up...lol...I just started petting her while we were looking in the mirror to show her it was OK. She doesn't do it much now. I can tell she sees it, but she kind of ignores it now. I haven't known many dogs like this. But, ever since I got her, I could tell she could see herself, even in windows at stores....lol...It is soooo cute!!
