so Im rescuing a pittie pup and Im very confused as to pick a boy or a girl!
I have had 4 dogs in the past and all have been pittie crosses except my last lil guy who is a ankle sized pittie (chihuahua)... I was wondering if any of you have noticed anything distinct differences in temperments of male and female pitties...Ive heard males are more rowdy and even tempered but tend to wander and that females are more laid back but tend to get moody when they get older any suggestions would be awesome at first I thought boy but my chi is a boy so then I thought a companion so maybe a girl??? |

I would venture to say that you cannot generalize when it comes to gender ...
It all depends - IMHO - on the individual dog's genetic make-up/temperament. My female (RIP), Madeleine, was giddy, silly and NOT laid back, and not moody in any way, shape or form. She lived to be 9 and 1/2 years of age. My male, Trusty, is laid back and a 'Zen' dog with people, but high prey-drive around many other critters ... Generally, opposite gender is a best bet - but not a guarantee that the pair gets along. |

I agree with all the info given, but also wanted to add...I like boys better, I donno I just do...also if your not going to do anything with the pup, and its just ganna be a pet, and your planning on getting it spay/neutered...neuters cost less >.< so that might be a reason to go with a male, also spays have a chance to cause incontinence so another reason I like males more hehe...that is about all the stuff I can think of to add, let us know what your getting and make sure you introduces the pup to the chi before you bring it in the home

I've owned both male and female dogs and really, it depends on the actual animal themselves.
Our previous dogs, a female Caviler (RIP) and a female Aussie Shepherd are so different, like night and day. Harley, the Caviler, was howdy, loud, bouncy- everything that a puppy is and then some as she carried her attitude into adult life. Athena, our Aussie, on the other hand, was quiet, reserved and a big, BIG scardy cat. Harley never let anything bother her- when it storms, Athena shakes like the world is ending. Our new boy, Dylan, is more like Harley. He likes to run, to play, to bark. He enjoys chewing and playing tug of war. So it's just really the individual, not so much as a "boys do this and girls do that" thing. |

It depends on the dog really. There is no "all females act like this" and "all males act like this", they're all individuals.
That said, I grew up around all male animals, so I do prefer them. However, I LOVE my female, Piper, and how different her personality is from Wilson's. She is more of a challenge, training wise, because she thinks a lot more than he does. When she's given a command, she's more like "but.. why?" whereas Wilson is like "oh, okay then" So she can be frustrating, but I still love her. She is also by far more personable and people oriented. Wilson loves people (he's a therapy dog, so he kind of has to), but he's more calm about it and is happy to just sit beside you and be petted. Piper is an OCD face licker and is all about being right in someones lap if they'll let her. But not all females are like Piper, and not all males are like Wilson. |

A little here, a little there.... just piss already dog and get it over with! ![]() ![]() If you have a male, I'd probably go with a female to decrease the chance of same sex aggression but that is, like others mentioned, no guarantee they will get along. Honestly, if I had a small dog and I was looking for a compatable match, I'd go with an adult that has been proven good with smaller dogs. What rescue are you looking to adopt from? |

My first pit bull dog was a neutered male pit mix (He was american pit bull terrier mixed with siberian husky) He was simply a doll, and he was very sweet, laid back and gentle.Such a strong heart.Just adored his people. He passed away from cancer at a young age.My current full APBT is female (well sorta, she was a ''sex reversed'' female-now spayed), she can be moody at times (grumpypants) but is gennerally a very well mannered dog, very human oreinted,LOVES attention (attention whore)and is also a very nice snuggle bug,and really LOVES to play!
I will allways own female dogs.I prefer them to males.... |
