Sadly the farming/cattle industry has gone to shit (ie:large industry) so not much use for dogs in a factory However I do agree...I find it annoying sometimes because Irie cant DO much. I have done nosework, CGC, training, etc. with her but I wish she could have a true purpose. Maybe one day if I dont live in a city she can drag my shit around. I also thought about having her carry my groceries home...sad but SOMETHING

the apbt at the highest level of the breed has been bred for one purpose and one purpose only.....theres no opinions about it
Yea but if you dont fight dogs you shouldnt let them lay around on a couch right?

I see people taking their pits to go hog hunting here in Florida quite often. I've seen some in kevlar vets and they're ready to go. The dogs love it!!!

I am with Bostonitis, I wish Goren COULD do things, but he can't, my mutt AST has a shallow chest that makes him not have the endurance he needs, all he really can do is swim, but he takes many mini breaks doing that, and flirt pole, don't consider either of those work though, I would love to hog hunt one day, maybe one day I will get a chance, but that is not in my current future.

now its an explosion as in Atomic Dog the magazine in there opinion there is no other bull dog.
Atomic Dogg is an American Bully magazine.

I wish I could work my dogs more as well, but just hard to find hunting areas around here, and we don't have much hogs (I've never seen one, but have been told they are around). I was talking to a man that hunts with his beagles, and he was saying how he has been running out of places to hunt them, , which I found very sad.

Once I get a proper pulling harness Lily will be dragging everything everywhere! Right now though she just drags me on my bike, and soon we will be able to go for many miles once she gets her boots. Maybe by this winter we can charge kids for sled rides .
As for real work, well, I would if I could. I'd love to get into schutzhund, but therapy work is our focus right now. Just because it's not deadly doesn't mean it's not work, and Lily does love it. We will hopefully get into flyball this winter.
I applaud the people that can get out there and do things like hunt with their dogs, but there's not much big game in the city.

OMG, that's horrible. I don't understand why someone would want to do that. I mean at least they could shoot the poor hog so it doesn't have to suffer so much..........wish I never would have watched that.

The hog doesn't really suffer. A Hog's skin is very thick and strong, and the squealing, a hog will do that even if you just grab it's leg. The dogs don't kill the hog, they hold it so the Hunter can kill it.

However, yes, some people just shoot the hog.

Default what a working pit bull is about
I see alot of threads of how cute the family pet is the sweet baby ect and I agree but what I dont see is much about the working pit.Every one is so consumed about BSL and I am with all of that but I think its where it all started in the 50s daddy had colbys to work on the farm they stayed out side well cared for but not spoiled. We hunt our dogs on hogs mostly and of course they moniter the property. We can not forget there heritage a strong faithful almost in my eyes a perfect breed,we should not ever forget.

you do have a point, but i think people have so much going on in their lifes they dont have time for anything more other then their dog as a pet.... But i can say here where i live alot of the ranchers are wanting pitbull/ border collie puppy's... my sister has always breed border collies as they have alot of cattle and work their dogs everyday, but now alot of people around here are wanting some pitbull bredd into their cow dogs, they want a dog that has the smarts a nature drive to do the job but also the want to never back down!!! My sister has a half boreder collie half pit that she works every day and she a wounderful, loving, hard working dog....

Imo I think there are too many pet bulls today, or pet dogs in general... Dogs need to be worked. But yes, I agree, we need more WORKING dogs in this breed.

A good working Border Collie will NOT back down, but rather evade a head-on attack. The best breed mix I've ever seen work cattle is an ACD/BC mix. Now THOSE dogs have the grit it takes to work even the most territorial bulls.
However, getting back to the bully breeds, most good hogdogs down here are APBT/Catahoula mixes. Honestly, most kinds of working "APBTS" are simply mutts that look like "pit bulls". Many weightpulling lines are mixed with larger dogs (dogos, mastiffs, etc), to produce heavier pulling dogs. My local bully-breed club has "hangtime" competitions, and this is where I see a LOT of true APBTs shine. Given the versitality of the breed, they can excel in just about anything you train them for.
