Cesar. I love victoria I do, as much as I love any other postive reinforcement/cookie giving trainer. Cookies are great, when your dog is a youngin and hasnt learned that if your not close enough to grab em, they can run free. Once they figure out they can run circles around you, cookies wont mean shit. My dogs would NOT react to cookies to save there life. Victorias methods are stuff cookies in there faces and have all the time in the world to train your dog slowly and lovingly. I expect my dog to listen to me regardless of the reward. Im not into bribery. I will give my dog plenty of praise and attention but sorry, I dont carry cookies everywhere. If they dont listen, I will find another way to get a stronger preferred response. I have 4 dogs and they all live together and none are DA or HA and none have any real issues, I use Cesar's training methods and always have and I know several friends who also do it this way.

He believes in shutting a dog down completely. I remember back in the day when training a horse was of the same mentality. And guess what? It may do what you want, but there is no spirit...only fear of you. I disagree. My dogs are not "afraid" of me and I'm not mean to them and they are not "shut down" from using some of his training methods. Its the true communication message in his methods that is important. It does not have to be mean or negative. Its an ah-ha moment and like I said, you either get it or you don't. I use some of Cesar's methods, I use treats, I use targeting, and others.
Its the same kind of crap that went on years ago when Monty Roberts (the Horse Whisperer) came on the scene with his training methods built on communication. All the old school trainers and horse people bad mouthed him into the ground because they were not about to change and they felt that communicating with the horse on its level and its own way was ridiculous. That's how people see Cesar as well. I know that some rescues will not allow volunteers to use any methods from Cesar and some rescues will not adopt dogs to people who even mention his name and I think that is absolutely absurd. There isn't a perfect trainer or methods. Not all dogs respond to a particular style of training and its important to use a number of methods and styles to find what a dog will respond to. |

I would choose Victoria, i feel the only damage she could do to my dogs is make them fat. I also would fear the damage that Ceasar would do to my dog. We had a vet that we only saw once. He loved Ceasar Milan and encouraged all his patients to get the book "Ceasars Way" He tried a Ceasar technique on Sasha. He felt he was an expert on training after reading his book and watching him on TV. He forced Sasha into submission. (By the way she was already acting submissive. She wasn't acting nervous or anything. She was calm. Was letting the nurse do what she needed to do.) She actually peed herself there on the table when he did that. He physically tried to force a submissive dog into submission. It was awful. And I don't know what the issue was, why he felt like he had to do that to give her a shot. She would have laid right down for him. She is one of those you can give her a shot and she won't even flinch. She is a very submissive dog by nature. And she is trained. Offer her a cookie and tell her to lay down and he could have done the shot no problem. Heck she wasn't moving from that table, go ahead and stick her while she is standing up she won't react. He did it because the only dog that ever bit him was a Jack Russell Terrier. And because Sasha was listed as JRT mix on her file he said he wasn't taking any chances. We never went back. Dude had a bias and I did not give him permission to scare the hell out of my dog. The BIGGEST PROBLEM I have with these shows is everyone seems to think they are a dog training/behavior expert because they watch these shows. And just because you watch a show or read a book does not mean you are an expert or that you should try that crap on someones dog. That is the only problem I have. I find Victorias show very entertaining but I'm no training expert |

Not shut down? Shocking a dog repeatedly for failing to obey your command? Towering over it and basically barking at in a threatening manner? Quickly rolling the dog over and battling it for "dominance"?
He trains by threats and power. He overpowers. I'm not saying one doesn't have to be firm with their dogs. My Shar Pei/Cane Corso dog was hell-on-earth in terms of training. He was very independent and often thought that my punishment was fair to pay for what he wanted to do thus he would continue on anyway. I had to be very firm with him and make sure he knew I was the boss....not him. But I didn't have to bark at him or put a shock collar on him under his collar to try to hide it from t.v. cameras. And I'm surprised you love him so. I thought Best Friends, one of the largest Animal Rights organizations and hoarders alive, and their ARista followers/employees would be against such negative training. I figured only lollipops would be allowed. ---------- Post added at 01:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:35 PM ---------- Your dog needs to know you are the boss and what you say goes. But you can very easy establish such a relationship by working with your dog and not against him. Set boundaries, engage in obedience, spend time bonding (exercise, fetch, down time....), etc. But you don't have to do the happy dance because you threw your dog on the ground and barked at it and made it pee in submission. I don't want a dog, or horse, like that. It's a 2-way relationship. |
