just being curious...it seems like most people on this forum keep their pits indoors.

I have two house dogs, and four outside dogs.

What advice do you need? (since this is the training and behavior section)

oh, I'm sorry---I'm so used to posting in this section I didn't pay attention to where it was.

it was just that based on a LOT of threads I've been reading, it seems like most people keep their dogs indoors. Which is odd because growing up, I NEVER saw pit bulls as house dogs. They were outdoor/guard dogs.

That is strange, because APBTs are not guardian breeds.

(I moved the thread)

Since Pit Bulls were specifically bred to be exceedingly human friendly I cant fathom why someone would try to use them as guard dogs. Alert barkers, yes.

I grew up in SE Michigan. Not a single person I have known in my life has kept their Pit Bulls outside with the exception of my sister and I think her problem with the dogs being in the house is that they aren't well trained. Everyone else I know likes their Pits indoors where they can be properly cuddled.

Pretty much! Mine would be pretty useless as a guard dog.. they might bark, but as soon as they would see the person walking towards them, they'd turn into a wiggling mess!

All 3 of mine live inside. I would never have an outside dog, just not my thing.

Yeah, mine are great "Alert" dogs, but doubt they'd be much of a guard dog.

hmmmm maybe this is what I mean. Oh wow....growing up around something long enough you think it's true. they are really mean though and it would prevent people from entering their yard. With all that barking and carrying on I mean.

Mine is fine in and out. When he's out he just stays in the shade, or entertains himself in the shade.

My dog is an inside dog. All my dogs have been regardless of breed. Now my Dad has always kept his larger dogs outside and his smaller dogs inside. But that is my stepmoms rule. If it were up to him all his dogs would be inside.

Honestly I've rarely seen an APBT kept outside. The most common dogs I see around here kept outside are Labradors, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers. Occaisionally I've seen a a Dalmatian as an outside dog and I've seen a few GSDs and Boxers. But most APBTs I know and have seen their owners keep them inside.

it was the EXACT opposite from me....growing up, and I am starting to think WHERE I grew up is why my opinions and experiences are so different, I saw a lot pits (they could've been mixed breeds, idk) and rottweilers, and they were always outside. Heck, I didn't know many people with small "toy" dogs that are so popular today. Everybody kept their dog outside, and that was that. We had a dog, and we kept him outside all the time. Him coming in was like on a rare, special occasion

My pit is inside, god forbid she get rained on! haha, from here on out all my dogs (no matter what breed) are going to be house dog because that's just my prefrence.
However our two family dogs that my parents still own are solely outside dogs. Those two live quite the life and are treated better than some housedogs. Growing up my father was dead set on no animal being in the house, especially large breed dogs. He felt only small dogs should come inside and since he hated small dogs we never got a house dog until I brought home Athena. Technically she's mine however until I find a place again that will allow pits, he has to live with her and he loves it.

Even my "guardian breed" is a housedog. Since he IS a guardian breed, I'd rather have him IN the house guarding us than outside in the fenced yard completely useless - lol.

I was just about to say that, Southern! Unless the dog is guarding something that is outside, like a car lot, what on earth is the point of it being out 24/7? If someone is going to break into your house all they have to do is let your dog out of the yard and they have free rein of your house. If someone starts going in your door/window and is met by vicious snarling and barking you can bet they're going to turn around and hit a easier house.

I've met many bulldogs who barking and make a racket until you get in their yard, then they lick you.

My dogs are housedogs because it's myself and my home I want my GSD to protect, and because the other one is a small dog that could be stolen or possibly escape if she was left alone long enough... My bulldog was indoors for the same reason, plus the bad neighborhood people tormented her when she was out. If I lived somewhere more secluded with a bigger property I'd make chainspots and have outdoor dogs, but I'd have indoor dogs too. I like the company and security.

If someone approaches Grimmies' yard while he's outside, he'll wag his tail and not make a peep. When someone comes on the front porch, or he hears someone outside, he puts his "big boy" bark and growl on, lowers his head, hair raises on the back of his neck, and he looks like my little (big!) German wolf

Gidget naturally "scares" people because she's a pit bull - lol. She really just wants someone to give her chicken or a cookie
