Just found this thread. Since i live in Australia and i own them i can probly help you more than most lol.
The APBT is a huge victim of bsl here but it is NOT against the law to own them depending on where you live. Every state and territory is different in some way so you best do your homework for your own state. In the ACT and NT you can legally own breed and sell the APBT legally and it will stay that way for some time i think. I personally wouldnt but a dog from the boardogs website, its full of people who are selling good dogs but the prices are just stupid they are feeding off bsl and making money out of their pups, its not uncommon for A and S kennels to peddle dogs on there for $1800 a pup. ive never paid more than $300 from friends. your biggest problem is going to be finding a person who WILL sell you pups that are worth buying, as those types of people dont let newcomers in easily, we are very protectgive of our dogs and most new comers to the breed are invited into the circle they dont just luck into becoming friends with them. Its unfortunate but even when we keep our dogs legally you may still be targeted by neigbours or even councils who dislike the breed. Our biggest problem here is the people who have crossed the APBT and have bred them with other breeds to use for Pigging and still sell the pups into the community, they sell them as APBT purebreds and when the buyer doesnt contain the dogs the right way and they get out and maul either another animal or a person its the entire breed that is tarnished and its not known the dogs are of mixed breed and unsocialised or plain and simple the owner has no to little idea of what they are dealing with nor how to contain it. Just to clarify something, since the breed was first introduced to our country in the seventies[late] there has only been one dog attack that was a pure bred APBT. every other attack is ussually reported on the news as an APBT as it gets people watching and reading papers but if you stick around a day or so it usually comes out that it was a mixed breed or another breed entirely. If you are serious about owning one please do your research for at least six months before even considering ownership. you need to check your local council and state laws[very important lots of people buy them without a clue and can end up in trouble] check containment laws, ie, i have to have an eight foot fence minimum, and every entry or exit point MUST be padlocked at all times, my dogs need to have a muzzle at all time when not in my yard, some places you have to have a bright collar which apparently tells other you own a "dangerous breed" [doesnt work ive had people ask me why a bright collar!]. owning an APBT in Australia is no joke and takes alot of responsibility , i have owned more than the average person here and i only buy gamebred dogs and i carefully select who and where i get my dogs from, my no one rule is to never ever buy a dog that is paperless as its a sure fire way to buy poorly bred dogs from peddlers that are taking advantage of the "black market" that bsl has made. It is hard sometimes but i think it is worth it, with a little bit of vigilance and care it is pretty easy, i have never had an incident since owning them besides a couple of cats being eaten for coming in my yard, and one small fight because i was stupid enough to entrust the care of the dogs to someone who thought they knew what they were in for and made a silly mistake. As long as i own dogs i will allways own at least one APBT i just love em over any other breed! GOOD LUCK! if you have any questions or anything at all you think i may be able to help you with please dont hesitate to shoot me a pm and i will help you in anyway i can, not having someone to help you is the biggest hurdle over here and im happy to be the person who helps if it makes your life a little easier. |
