I'd get in too much trouble. Someone would start reciting media horseshit around me and I'd go HA on them and it would be a mess. I'm better off leaving it to the people that have a higher tolerance of stupidity.

I'm impressed as hell with the people that really do it for the dogs and who understand dogs, but I think there are too many fluffy bunny "oh look see what a wonderful person I am I'm volunteering" types out there that do more damage than good.

Sooner or later I'd end up trying to kill one.

It's hard not to flip out on people.. I really have to bite my tongue.. a lot. The SPCA I volunteer at is also a low cost clinic; some of the people that come in there are so freaking stupid. Lots of blue Bully males (intact of course) come in just to get Rabies vaccines and all of their owners are "making money off of them".

This guy came in the other day with a Pit Bull pup that couldn't have been more than 3wks. old. My friend & I walked over to him and asked why he was there. Said the pup wasn't eating solid food and was throwing up regular milk Pup looked SO sick. We asked where he got it (since selling a pup under 7wks. is illegal), and he just mumbled some crap.

We had the adoptions director come out to talk to him to try to get him to sign the pup over and come to find out, it's his sisters pup and she has the mom. He wanted to sign the pup over, but she got on the phone and wouldn't allow it. Poor pup.. it probably died.. it was so sick

I have very little tolerance for people so would not be a good idea for me. My meds help but not enough to put up with some of the idiots.

I take pictures to post on CL and PF for our local kill shelter. Ironically it has helped a lot since most local people didn't even know that shelter existed. I will go to adoption events with them as well. I ignore the politics and trust me there is plenty of it going on. But when anyone says something to me about anything that annoys me, I just say "I'm just trying to get animals adopted" and smile and walk off.

It's not worth my time to get involved in shelter politics. I have my opinions and I am still learning the gig, but in the end, my time is better spent posting pictures and marketing animals than arguing with people that I don't care about anyway.

I agree there are many people that just want to make themselves feel good for "being a volunteer" but if there efforts help atleast one dog out, then in my eyes its worth it. The shelter I go to, you see nearly 99% of all dogs intact and with DA, but that just shows me how ignorant the "owners" are. So when I go I try to walk as many dogs as possible, teach them simple commands and restraint. But I also try to educate these potential adopters or even staff on the breed(s) because in all reality these dogs are products of their environment and owner; hence why i have no compassion for people!

I used foster dogs for our local HS when we had the time, haven't for about 6 months because of work although it looks like my hours are going to get cut so probably will again soon. "Pit bulls" are fairly rare up here though, very small town so mostly small dogs and mutts.

I have been a volunteer for the Seattle Humane Society going on 5 years now. I first started doing Adoption Support once a week until my schedule changed and I wasn't able to get there that often.

Now I help out with special events and am one of the few foster families that will take in bully breeds.

Not as much as I used to and at our shelter volunteering means fundraising and I prefer to be more hands on with the dogs. I'm not a people person. So I don't officially volunteer at this point. When I go in its either to drop off needed supplies or just to pick 1 or 2 dogs just to spend some time with, give them some love. Even try to teach them commands such as sit and stay. I mean a dog that understands even that much has a better shot at getting a home. So that is what I do. But since losing Trouble I have had to stay away from the shelter because I get too attached to one and get heartbroke when I can't bring that dog home. So I hope to soon be able to get back down there. But right now its just not a good time. Though every other month I do try to drop off supplies, I just can't spend as much time around the dogs right now.

I am fostering my first rescue... and I really support and push for a local rescue here. They are helping me with Cooper, so I give them all the support I can, donate, push for them, give them lots of push on FB. Not sure if all that can be included in "volunteering", and I would do a ton more if I could.

i am just now getting back into volunteering but after reading a post on hear it reminded me of why i got out of it. I used to volunteer once a week at a local SPCA shelter it was a satelite shelter and With my shop during the day and teaching at night i am only free friday, sat and sunday so i would go in on sat and like everything i would take owner ship and do manual labor....the stuff the fuffies dont do. And It never failed someone would ask me on a weekly basis what i did to have to do community service (Court Ordered) and why i chose the shelter, or like the comment made here in an earlier post that they knew the person was up to no good! then they found out he had done nothing wrong! that is being PREJUDICE! prejudging some one before you know what is going on.

so i guess that is why i am happier just fostering for a local Bully rescue. you dont have to deal with the people who are volunteering for different reasons other than the dogs

I did rescue for almost 20 years and was on the board of directors at a local Humane Society. At some point the bs, red tape and fur momma mentality became more than I could stand and I do what I can outside of the spotlight.

I foster cats a lot... but I think I've done my last litter for a while. I currently have 7 kittens and 4 adult cats here.. and it's CUH-RAZY!

I also do animal control for a living.. so I get paid but still. lol

I was a full time all breed rescue for a long time. I'm taking a big break from it now to pay off my credit cards, deal with my rescue "rejects" that I have and rest my attitude a bit.
I still do transport, give out gift certificates for rescue raffles(free grooming) and guide(yell at) people.
But me sooo tired of people

I work every Saturday at a private all breed rescue and have done so for 5 years. I work with great people, mend fences, fill holes, sweat, provide medical care, mostly just work with the dogs. When I have time I do home visits. I also foster puppies, when one gets adopted, another comes in... Seems like we have no shortage of "Alabama ditch dogs" around here. I like the fostering best even though with every new pup I lose sleep and sometimes shoes..... I like the fund raising least. Just did a great fundraiser last month, just one idiot..... wanted to trade in her 10 month old GSD (that she got for grandma) for a better trained one..... After all these years, I finally have a failed foster, (Abby) and I think when this last one goes I need to take a break from fostering and give Abby all my attention for a while. We'll see how long that lasts.... I love puppies!
