Default This dog looks really overweight right?
A guy posted this on my Canon forum, I told him he needed to lose weight that he was really overweight, obviously the dog is old and I am sure it is uncomfortable as all get out. He said in his prime he was 100+ now he is around 85, I told him if he went down to around 65lbs he would feel alot better, he just put

"HAHAHA "

Really? The dog looks terrible to me

He could afford to lose some weight...that's for sure. Wonder if he's ever had his thyroid checked?

Ugh I meant to say dog in the title, I hate typing from a phone. I am not sure, he may have just been fed alot his whole life, he looks pretty old. It is funny though, outside of this little PBC circle, everything thinks our dogs are skinny lol

IMO he's a bit of a chunk butt. However the owner may honestly not realize that 1. his dog is over weight 2. that it's bad for him to be like that. To many dog owners thing they can show their love with food, a good ol' walk will be much better

Haha when I first said the dog was overweight his response was:
he just looks big lying down. hes actually pretty tall for his breed. we used to joke about him being part horse when he was a pup because hes all legs.

not sure what he weighs now. he was over 100 in his prime, but hes 14 years old now. id guess 85ish

That dog does not look tall to me, looks like a pot bellied pig

People will never understand.... There's a beagle currently boarding at my work. He weighs 33 pounds (average weight for a beagle is between 20-25lb). As soon as I saw him I said "man, he's fat, could probably stand to lose 10 pounds or so".
The head tech looks at me completely puzzled as says 'you sound like [the vet]' (which, let me tell you, is NOT a compliment). I told her that he was quite overweight, and that I've seen properly sized beagles. She shook her head at me, she didn't see anything wrong with it. And that's from a certified vet tech who's been in the field for 15+ years!

Oh I know how that goes, some of the people at my vet say my dogs are skinny because they don't look like the "pitbulls" that come in often. Of course they don't! lol

When you're lazy and fat like I was, showing your appreciation with food is the only way you know how. My last dog, craved the outside, but I kept him in 98% of every day. He got fat. He got bored. I felt sorry so I fed him all he could eat all day every day plus table scraps.

This time around, I'm a triathlete. I haven't owned a dog in three years. After he gets about a year old, my pit bull is going to stay in a constant state of soreness just like me. Some days we'll run, some days we'll bike and other days we'll swim... Heck a couple of times a month we'll do all three until we both drop.

Yep... this first year, I'll just build him a nice walking base, but next year, we're gonna train together.

In summary... Some owners don't mind fat dogs. I didn't. It was unhealthy for him, but I was also unhealthy. Like owner, like dog.

I find the best thing to do is even if you know the dog is a male you ask in how long is the dog going to have pups. That gets the message across to the people that their dog is huge.

I've been accused of starving my dogs by people with bullies that are easily 35lbs overweight.

That dog is overweight, can't say how much over because of the pic though. I like to keep elderly dogs a little fat in case of illness so they don't waste away before you can diagnose the problem.

I should post that Jim!

---------- Post added at 03:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:22 PM ----------

No, i don't think you're being sarcastic, I know you don't know the first thing about my dogs, or what you're even talking about.
In fact, your ignorant assumptiin of "I know he is a mix' further proves this point. you don't know the first thing about my dog. You shoukd really keep these assumptions to yourself.

He is a 100% pure bred AKC certified AmStaff. He was in shows for the better part of 5 years, and bred after that. All his papers are in order, and he regularly sees a local AKC certified vet. And at 14years old, has led a long and healthy life.

Do yourself a favor.

I thought he was saying it was a "pitbull" because he posted in the thread for them, regardless, the dog is fat, and if he was 100lbs in his prime, that means he was a show dog at 100lbs? That isn't the Amstaff weight range is it?

I know a guy who does this to fat women. I can't think of one who lost weight as a result.

Oh I know some owners don't mind fat dogs and some just don't know how bad it is. I'm glad you and your current dog are that active and hope you have many happy, healthy years together. However just because I do feel sorry for those dogs, and the people who own them because a lot of times they themselves have issues that need dealt with, it doesn't make it right.

That poor Beagle !! I HATE seeing overweight Beagles, well overweight dogs in general, but Beagles strike a nerve with me....seeing how I work HARD to keep my guy fit, I just had him drop from 25 pounds down to 18.3 pounds.....and he looks AMAZING . Alright I'm rambling now.....

Anyways.....back to that overweight Bully, he is Fatty and looks like he could stand to loose about 15 pounds!!

Again proving how little you truly know.
You should really make it a habit of knowing what you're talking about, before opening your mouth.
Pits and amstaffs were the same dog until 1936 , when staffs were bred separately for their temperament.

I will never understand why people like you chime in when you're so clueless.
I'm done here.
Read a book

Another comment from him, that isn't true is it?

Why thank you anytime you ever want him let me know I'll be happy to ship him up there for you to show him to said Vet Tech

Shame people say I'm starving him to death because you can see the outline of his last three ribs and when he's breathing heavy you can see the outline of his entire rib cage......I'm such a bad owner

There is someone in this area (a nice older gentleman) who didn't realize how overweight his German Shepherd was. When I met him, the dog was 174 lbs. He should have been no more than 90 tops based on his frame. He was a purebred GSD...not a mix of anything.

After helping him with some feeding issues and food, we got him down to 94 lbs which I thought was pretty darn good.

He couldn't "remember the last time he saw his dog jog."
