Default Can someone explain why tethering is illegal to me?
Well the family was barbecuing in the back yard today while the kids were splashing around in a pool. Some of the family is weary around dogs(not scared, just..cautious) so we put the three dogs on leashes and put the end of the leashes on stakes. The three dogs roamed where there leashes(which are pretty lengthy, in my opinion) allowed. The doorbell rings and it’s the ACO, saying he’s from Savannah Animal Control Dispatch, and he understands we have three dogs and just wants to let us know putting them outside on leashes like that is illegal and it’s called tethering. Next time the dogs will be permanently removed.

Everyone was like WTF? Pretty much everyone where we last lived did that..but in a Gated Community, people a pretty touchy about dogs so..

Anyway, why is tethering illegal? Do you agree with it? I’m just asking because I’ve heard of tethering, but I never fully understood it.

It has become illegal in many areas because of irresponsible people leaving their dogs chained for extended periods of time without any food, more importantly water or shelter.

Stupid people usually always lead to stupid laws. I am for tethereing your dog if you do it right and the animal has no way to choke itself and has food, water, shelter. There have been instances where the chain spot isnt far enough away from a fence a dog will try to jump the fence and ends up choking itself common sense evades some people and it leads to horror stories of dogs that are tethered. Here you cant have a dog tethered in the back of a truck. I think we should have tethering laws that require owners to keep dogs on a leash, chain, cable etc if the dog has a possibility of getting out of its yard. It may solve a few problems but no one wants to take the time to make sure anything is done right so they just don't bother with it.

The real reason theres anti tethering laws is to deter Game-dog fanciers since thats the most common way people with a yard full of game-dogs secure them! They think it helps stamp out dogfighting in this country! Iv'e heard this out of the head of my countys animal controls mouth! Also from the director of public saftey's mouth in my county as well!
So the'll just use kennels then, In my opinion worse and way more restrictive with less square footage than tethering!

---------- Post added at 04:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:52 PM ----------

Then theres the stupid people factor as well! Some people don't have the brain capacity to tether a dog to where it can't and wont get choked, hung, tangaled, overheat, or reach it's water!

Let us not forget that group of people that think it is cruel not to let your dog just run free when it is outside (even though they'll be the first to bitch if it runs up and scares them).

Root cause == ignorance and stupidity.

Ahh. I see now.

The stupidest thing about it is...

It’s illegal to tether your dog. However, it is not illegal to have your dog off leash, as long as they don’t leave your property and is not a ‘caution breed’(long story short, your dog can run the hell off as long as it’s not a pitbull.)

I find it quite interesting, because we’re not allowed to have fences in this community, so pretty much everyone’s dogs roam around the eight streets of houses. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather my dog be tied up with food, atleast two toys, water, and be in the shade rather than having a 90% chance that it’ll be hit by the always speeding cars in this neighborhood. Anyway..yeah. Some laws just puzzle me.

No fences, no tethering and no leash law...until someone with a lot of money and a really good lawyer gets bit.

I've moved this to the General Dog Discussions in hope that you will get better responses here.

That is so goofy! I tether Sug on her long lead when I'm working on the garden outside since we don't have a fenced in property. I don't see why it'd be a problem as long as they're supervised and have the essentials!

I'm not sure if its illegal here, I know you don't see it here anymore and if I read correctly there is a law about it. I think you can tether here but there is a set amount of time you can tether. The reason its illegal in many places is people would tie their dog out and just leave the dog on the thether for hours to days at a time. And believe me after awhile the dog would break loose. Its a cruelty issue. A lot of people that have been busted for abuse, fighting, and neglect lately have had a lot of their dogs tethered. Like I said though I don't think its illegal here but I do think you can only have them out on a tether for a limited amount of time. Personally I think tethering is a good thing if you don't have a fenced in property. As long as you are out there to supervise the dog and the dog can reach water and shade. I just think its a good way to let your dog run around if you don't have a yard and you don't use a dog park. And I don't use dog parks. I don't have a yard either but thankfully I have a relative with a fence who is so kind to let us use their yard a few times a week for offleash exercise. If not I'd have to use my parents yard and get some sort of tether.

There is normally a set amount of time for laws regarding tethering of dogs.
I'm really surprised your area doesn't have one.

Sounds to me like a lousy situation for having any dog in your area.
Sorry to hear that.

People feel that it's 'cruel'
and it makes dogs 'aggressive'
it's just a load of BS.
