I've heard that white or light colored dogs have more skin allergies, but do humans have a tendency to be allergic more to light colored dogs? I've always gotten a little itchy around Simon, but lately my skin has been really getting red and itchy to where I have to take a Benadryl or something. Anyone know anything about this or ever heard of this? I'm not allergic to any of the others, although they are all still itching from the flea issue. But I've been itchy around Simon since he was a puppy. Same thing with my parents pooch.

From what I understand its the dander that triggers allergies. Maybe the dogs you react to produce more than the others. Could also be from the flea issue.

Worse comes worse talk to the doc about allergy shots. I know some poor souls have allergies to all dogs and take monthly shots so that their family members can keep dogs.

fleas will make you react very badly if they have them. also some people who has soft and or sensitive skin, their hairs make your skin itchy. hub has this problem.

Not sure about skin color affecting allergies, but human's allergies change every 7 years or so. I would bathe the dog you're allergic to more often and see if that changes things. Maybe you're allergic to Simon's saliva, so after he licks himself and you touch him, that's when your allergies are worse. Keep working with it and see what others say here, talk to your vet, even pet store employees who may have advice. Good luck!

The dander is what people have a allergic reaction to. Easily solved(since I tested positive to everything in the world except corn and a horse) The allergist gave me this advice which has worked, Once weekly douse your dog w/ DISTILLED water-it eliminates temporarily the pet dander. Works on dogs and cats-good luck

You can spontaneously generate an allergy to something, especially if you've been over-exposed to it. I'd probably go to an acupuncturist rather than take meds, but it's your call.

What type of dog food are you feeding? Some dog foods (generally the expensive and healthy ones) keep the dander down.

I am horribly allergic to fur dogs (GSD's ect) but any real short haired dog I am fine around. My pups sleep in the bed, lay with me, ect and there is not a problem.

What you could do is have a safe room if getting rid of the pup is the last thing you want to do (which I totally understand)

Make it your bedroom, where it is pet free and it's your room.

I would recommend an air purifier. I got one for when I was having seasonal allergies and within a day I could actually sleep at night.
Even though you're having a dermal reaction, I think you'll notice a difference with the air purifier, especially if it's a dander problem.
Also, my best friend had 2 dogs (now only 1) and 4 cats and worked in a kennel, and she's allergic to both dogs and cats. She just got used to sniffling and occasional sinus infections. So, it can be done.

i took a nap with him today and i think it IS his saliva... his fur didn't itch me, but as soon as he started licking my face, it felt like i was going to have to scratch my face right off... it turned bright red and got all bumpy... weird.

i have two air purifiers... i wouldn't dream of living without them. they DO help control a lot of stuff in the air.

yep... it's the dander... itched like mad today after we went to do errands. getting the distilled water this weekend, although we're scheduled for t-storms all weekend, so i'll have to wait til monday. simon doesn't do the bathtub very well....
