Default How did you come up with your dog's name?
Some of you might know that i adopted my second dog about 3 weeks ago. I still have yet to come up with an official name for her lol. She has nicknames that she responses too but nothing worthy of being her official name lol

But for my other dog Gottie, it was easy because Gottie was his shelter name and it just stuck. And he already knew his name so I just left it.

So I am curious as to hwo you guys came about naming your dogs?

Lucy was... a Lucy. I took one look at her, and I knew that was her name. And it's better than her old name, Asia. There was no way I was calling my dog Asia.

When I got Ethel, I wanted a matching name. Plus the I Love Lucy theme is really cute. As it turns out, she's an Ethel.

Richie named Damascus. I wanted to call him Bear.

There are lots of dog name websites. I just sift through them until something seems right. Then I teach my dog the name by saying it and giving them a treat... Just takes a few repetitions.

I was going to have a Fred and Ricky, but neither of those stuck with my Rottie. Maybe when I get more Saint Bernards it will fit.

GG became GG because when I got her, I could not think of a name...
she was a female and she was being really good... so I just referred to her as being a good girl.... I shortened that to GG and she still is...
Buddy became buddy because while we were thinking of a name for him, he was unexpected, some one dropped him off at my farm.... Judy mentioned how good a buddy he was being to GG... so we called him buddy and refer to him as GG's dog...

My pup is Athena. In mythology Athena was the goddess of wisdom. I always loved the myths and instead of typical bedtime stories I read these stories. Athena was determined, wise, compassionate, and ruthless. Athena (the goddess) was extremely loyal to those she chose to care about, she would go through fire for them. I guess I could see all those things in my girl. She's a little spitfire and won't give up at anything but whatever she does you can see she learns from it.
Of course there are times that she looks like an idiot but I still love her.
Her middle name Rose actually came from a few things. I liked how elegant it sounds and Athena has some pink (rose) coloring around her mouth. It looks like she has rose colored lipstick on at all times.

Actually there are quite a few with water, a male one is obvious, Posideon. Females could be his wife Amphitrite. Then there's the goddess of fresh water Tethys. Then Achilles mother was a water nymph Thetis. Lots of water nymphs also. PLus venus rose from the water so I guess she could kind of be considered.

When Jake came to us from the shelter they had named his Ross. It just didn't fit him. Within a week, we just found ourselves calling him Jake.

For me the name just kind of shows up as I get to know the dog.

Of course, this always adds to some pretty wierd nicknames along the say.

Grimm got the name "Grimm" because, well, he's German, and we both love literature. What better name than "Grimm" as in The Brothers Grimm (versus "The Grim" from Harry Potter or "The Grim Reaper" which are the first two things that pop into peoples' heads when we say "Grimm.")

Gidget was dumped at the shelter as "Raven." Then she was renamed "Spork." We thought "Gidget" was a much better name for her since she's petite and bubbly

Jaeger got his name because I was browsing baby names and Jaeger stuck out. I don't like the usual "Max" or "Duke" or whatnot. Never met a dog named Jaeger in person. Means "Hunter" in German... I also pronounce is Jay-Ger, not Yay-Ger, makes it a bit more uncommon.

His middle name is Faolán. I got it from the Eragon books, looked it up and it was "Little Wolf" in Gaelic.. I was actually going to name a puppy that I tried to adopt, a pure sable GSD pup, Faolán... but we won't go into that... The stinking rescue did not even check me out before going to the next adopter...

His full registered name is Melody's Double Trouble Jaeger... My name is Melody Double, and my goodness he lived up to the name

Wiz Khalifa- I'm a fan of this hip hop artist of the same name. Wiz, short for wisdom, and Khalifa, meaning successor, as I hope my new pup is a successor to his fathers wisdom

Sasha is my first dog that I ever got to name. Most of my dogs already had a name, parents named them, etc. I was saving the name Sasha for a Siberian Husky. I was seriously considering the name Ziva for Sasha. You know like Ziva from NCIS. Would have been a bad choice though can't imagine my little scaredy dog sharing a name with a badass former assasin. My husband hated the name Ziva because we already had a dog with a Z name. But I did like the meaning of Ziva it means "Bright or Radiant in Hebrew"

Well he said "Why don't we call her Sasha you've been saving that name for awhile" and I said no I'm saving that for my husky one day. Well we go and meet Sasha we had already set in to motion the adoption we just had to meet her. When I saw her my husband handed her over to me and I'm like you are such a pretty girl Sasha. It just kind of slipped out without me thinking about it but she was indeed a Sasha. And she has been Sasha ever since.

I like what her name means too "Defender of Men" well she may be no defender of men but when push has come to shove she has protected us when need be from potential dog attack, potental mugging, and a fire that started upstairs in our neighbors apartment when we were asleep she woke us when she started smelling smoke. So I think she has earned the name by now.

I went with S names and just kept going... I have a touch of OCD, so it worked out...LOL. When we got Simon my b/f kept talking about names like Bones and Kane and to me it just sounded like wrestler boy names, so I looked into his eyes and was like, "nope, this one is a Simon...look at him." Simon took his name quickly and we call him Si for short...pronounced "Sigh"... so we can say "Si, Si, Sweet as Pie.." I know. We're dorks.

The others are Sophie (a name I always loved and thought if I ever had a kid I might use, but no kids... only dogs), Sampson (for my chi... thought I was being cute, but he ended up being 17lbs, so it was no lie), and Sadie Symber... I found her in December, but she wouldn't come to that so, I just threw some letters around. She's so unique looking we often say she's her own breed... part kangaroo, part fox, part retreiver... Symberoo Fox Terrier... even tho I think she's a goldie/cocker mix.

I also had a Mr. Bubbles (he liked bath time), Iggy Poop (when I worked in music), Ladybug, Major (our GSD with one floppy ear...it was an ironic perfection...he was always saluting), Buster Smooth (our cat... we don't have him anymore.)

I've never had problems with pet names... I usually help my friends come up with theirs. Each dog seems to have it's name already picked out and it's waiting for you to figure it out

Ike was here for 3 days before the hubby was browsing aimlesly on the inernet and came across a picture of President Dwight D Eisenhower. Ike kinda looked like him and his campaign slogan was "I Like Ike!" which was his nickname.

Rita was Princess, but it didn't suit her rough and tumble personality. I wanted a shirt name for her and my husband thought of naming her Rita after the Beatles song "Lovely Rita". The Rita in the song is a meter maid and seems to be dressed "like a military man" implying a bit of tomboy but is also lovely and feminine just like our girl!

Get to know the dog and take inspiration from anywhere you can find it. The right name will come.

When we picked Harley at the shelter he had no name. So as soon as it was official we had 4 days to fgure out a name before we picked him up so I was thinking like crazy. Had a bunch of cute name ideas but they were all either to mean or to sissy for him. I didnt want a sissy name because hes a strong breed but didnt want a mean name to scare people more than they already are of pit bulls. We are also car/racing people so we hoped something automotive related would work but nothing we tried fit his look. Finally we went to Petsmart to get him a collar and leash and such and we passed the section of Harley Davidson leashes and without thinking I said "What about Harley?" and just as quickly hubby replied "thats perfect" so without a second thought Harley he became. We arent even into harley motorcycles but whatever lol he is my 'harley' and orange looks awesome on him.

And our little kitten (he was a stray who just showed up and hasnt left) got his name of Booger when I pulled up and saw that MIL left the bag of cat food outside and the little twirp (who was already bossing MILs cat around) was trying to sneak food out of the bag because he ate what was in his bowl (he was super under weight when he showed up so we slowly built up his food but he didnt like the idea) and I said "that little booger" and my 2 year old son said "BOOGIE!" so wa-la the bossy little kitten is now Boogie
