Excellent post!! Thanks for posting it, and reminding us that what may be a great holiday for us, can be a recipe for disaster for our dogs. Mine hate gun shots and fireworks, so mine will all be inside for the weekend. The older I get, the less I like the fireworks... I'm in the country on 25 acres, surrounded by woods.... which means, I'm surrounded by the perfect fire starter if someone sets off fireworks and they malfunction or don't go out before hitting the woods. Where I am, by the time the fire department got there, all that would be left would be the concrete slab.

This is a great reminder as this'll be the first 4th of July for our pup. I plan to play some youtube fireworks sounds for him tonight and see how he reacts. I'll give him treats for positive reinforcement as well.

a few years ago my brother had a beagle for hunting and on the 4th when everyone started lighting off fireworks he broke his chain and was gone... i think my grandpa found him and gave him back to the guy they bought him from the dog was suposed to be a good hunting dog but my brother hadnt yet actually got to take him out (even though hed had him a little while) so he himself didnt know how hed react... but even dogs that are "suposed' to be used to loud noises may not like the constant noises of fireworks and freak

Damn, it's begun....just had a beautiful male tan and black pit mix show up at my house. He's obviously terrified of the fireworks neighbors are shooting off. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no where to put him. It's not fair to the dogs I've already got in my rescue to take in another one. I'm trying to find him a foster, but if I can't by the morning, I have to take him to animal control. I'm having to go over to another rescuers house just to borrow a crate to keep him in for the night.

---------- Post added at 11:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:36 PM ----------

I remembered I had an extra crate stored in my guestroom. I took 5 minutes to grab the pieces and put them together outside and he ran to the other side of my neighbor's fence and climbed over. I went ahead and put the crate together (old school drop pin, it was a bitch) in case he comes back. I'm sure he won't be the only loose dog to grace us with their presence this weekend.

How sad South. I am sure the shelter I work at is going to fill up as well. Hopefully the owners will come looking. I wish people would just keep their pets inside and safe when they light fireworks.

We are going to light fireworks in a bit here but all of our pets are staying inside.

Yep, it started today. I was at work and the resident relative took Sasha out in the backyard to pee. I get home and was told neighbors were shooting off really loud fireworks and Sasha got all scared.

Took her out back to pee, she runs down the steps off the deck, pees, then runs back up. I got her a new kennel pad for in her puppy shack on the deck (one of those sheepskin fleece things) since the rolled up edge is nice under her chin when she pokes her nose out the door of it. She went in, sniffed it, turned around and ran back for the door to the house. I called her out, she runs in, turns around, looks at me like "okay, thanks, cool, now let me back in the house".

Back inside.

What's really weird is she was just totally hyper wanting to go for a walk (I mean whiny/groany/growly vocal) and I have never in the 4 years I've had her seen her that wound up.

The weekend should be interesting. I just put a little gate on the deck up at the top of the stairs so she can go out from the kitchen and be confined to the deck where someone can easily see her through the windows and know where she is. She's been loving the sun, alternating between laying on the boards after the sun warms them up to curling up in her puppy shack for some shade.

I expect she's going to be hiding out in the house most of the weekend.

He came back and I have not been able to find a foster home (I'm admittedly pretty strict, not many people want to fill out the application). Animal Control is going to pick him up and I'm going to see if I can find some where to board him that doesn't require "group play." I feel bad about sending him to AC but I simply don't have the space. I've rescued (got them fixed and adopted) about 8 stray or surrendered pits on just my block in less than a year, but sometimes you just don't have room.

"Our Sheltie/Beegle mix dog (Shelly) got out of our back yard today. She heard fireworks and took off."

And so it begins. The above ad was posted on our Craigslist at 11:09 tonight

Default Warning: It's one of the biggest weekends for people to lose their pets
Fourth of July is this weekend and I just wanted to remind everyone to make sure your dog is securely on a leash or in a fenced in yard. So many people loose their pets because the fireworks spook them. My good friends lost their poodle mix last year while at a friend's house in TN. She heard the fireworks and took off. They never found her after driving back their for weeks and putting up hundreds of fliers. It was heart breaking.

GREAT ADVICE!

We had an adopted German Shepherd (adopted him at 10 mths - he had been in a kennel at the Vet's since 4 months of age) when we lived on a house in a cul de sac. Of course, everyone wanted to come down to the cul de sac to light fireworks. Even with the fenced yard, I took him out on a leash. The poor dog didn't want to go outside to the bathroom for ten days after the 4th for fear of the fireworks.

Grimm and Gidget, on the other hand, don't bat an eye at gunshots, fireworks, etc.

Yup. This is from my community's fireworks celebration site:
Leave Your Pets at Home – Dogs do not enjoy the loud noises made by the fireworks. Leave them home in the quiet of an air conditioned room. More dogs are lost on July 4th than any other day of the year.

Neither of my dogs care, but I'm sure they don't enjoy it. If it's that loud for us, imagine how loud it is to their sensitive hearing.

Ive never had a problem with dogs and fireworks.. though if i ever did, theyd have to get through a crate, a door, another door, a closed in porch, a fence and then the neighbors fence.. im good i think!! LOL

though i knew a guy who had a dog who would go after fireworks.. anyone else heard of that? the dog was insanely obsessed.

Yes, my parents had a mini-dachsund who actually would go after them. It was scary.

Ugh... I totally forgot... 4th is one of my least favorite times. One of my dogs is a nervous wreck who needs meds, the other wants to eat people and we have many, many, many who try to come sit in our yard to watch fireworks because we're on the water where they set them off...

Great advice, if only more people would follow, I almost always find someone's lost dogs on the 5th...

Thank you for this reminder. Years ago I had my dog out in a friends back yard during the fireworks and she freaked out and jumped up onto a table and scaled a six foot stockade fence and ran down the street. I caught her and brought her home. She never even flinched at fireworks are any loud noise before this. It must have been that she was in a strange place.

Great advice! This is going to be Athena's first fourth of July so we'll see how she does. Normally nothing bothers her but we're going to be extra cautious. My neighbors boxer took off last fourth of july and wasn't found for quite a while.
