Default keeping them cool in the heat...
Just wanted to get an idea of what other folks might be doing to keep their dogs cool in the summer heat. I live in CA and it's starting to get toasty again and I can already see the dogs reacting. They spent the whole winter in their crates at night inside the garage. During the day now they are out in the yard (all gravel, no grass) or on the patio in the shade. I was thinking about installing a mist system to keep things a little more comfortable, maybe inside their kennel that is covered and protected from direct sunlight---what do you think?

Kiddie swimming pool!!!

Mine love it... and if I fill it to the top, they root around in it like they are aligators.... maybe that means they are "gator pits".

Mollie:

Bella spitting on Mollie....

Bella trying to "eat" the water...

I just ended up with the famous "goober-dork" pit bulls... oh, and Mollie is the very rare "couch potato" pit bull.

Excellent point DieselPitBull..... mine never stay out for more than just potty time, except when I'm filling up the pool and they can get in. Being as they are inside dogs as it is, I don't them overheating, so if the pool isn't ready, they only stay out for a few minutes.

Diesel thinks the kiddie pool is a huge water dish he is a huge fan of the hose though

The swimming pool picture is cracking me up, I need to buy one of those.

Last weekend we had Sully out in the backyard and we were spraying her with the hose. She loved it.

Any ideas for getting a dog used to a kiddie pool? Mine doesn't like water much.

Mine didn't take to the pool last year...but since then Bully has gotten a little more brave with water so I think when I get to Florida I'll pull it out.

Other than that they are lazy A/C pits. Every once in a while when it's nice and not really hot they will lay out on the porch, but I'm careful about making sure they aren't out there to long (they can always bark to come in) since we have no shade in our backyard.

It's the best $15 I've ever invested in a means to entertain, and keep them cool in the heat!

Bella loves the hose, so much so, that she makes it impossible for me to water my trees for her big block head getting in the way, and her stepping all over my new baby trees.

Any ideas for getting a dog used to a kiddie pool? Mine doesn't like water much.
Once it got hot, mine just got in it... I do have a couple of dogs that will not get in it, no matter how hot it is. Gizzmo and Maxx won't go near it. Titus just stands in it, then gets out. But Bella, Mollie and Zoey all three love it, and will lay down in it. I don't know how they got used to it... just from it being so hot outside, it's a good way to cool them off.... You may have to coax him into it, get in it with him, so he knows it's ok, maybe splash some water on his belly, so he will know it's a good means of cooling down. Once the heat hit, mine stays in the back yard 24/7, and every day when I get off work, I head straight home, change clothes, and outside to hook up the hose to rinse it out (between the block head's interrupting), and start filling it up with fresh cool water. I can't keep mine out of it until I get it full, and the water never stays clean for more than 30 seconds.

Harley and Jake love the kiddie pool, the trick is getting them out of it long enough to put clean water in it.

Conner won't get within 10 feet of it, no matter how hot it gets.

The hose is just plain fair game, I have to be sure and not leave it out in the yard with the dogs, or it will become a sprinkler hose.

Kiddie pool. Sprinklers. Not going outside at all and just napping on the couch (she likes that one but she needs to spend some time outside)

Or Sashas favorite outside keeping cool activity that always results in a bath:

Rolling around and laying in the dirt/mud in the shade!

If you have kids it won't take long. LOL She hated the kiddie pool last year so we got rid of it. I had my daughter sitting in her kiddie pool this year (not Sashas) and Sasha decided to dive right in. She wants to be with my daughter all the time. Now granted I was in the kiddie pool too my daughter isn't sitting up on her own yet. Didn't expect Sash to jump in. But she did. My daughter didn't like the kiddie pool so its now Sashas. My daughter does better in the big pool.

Seriously though I think the big thing is not to force the pool on the dog. Some dogs like to be in water and some don't. Your dog will get in when he/she is ready. You can coax with yummy treats, but never force it.

Good to know I'm not the only one that's had a hose funeral... the first one, my dogs tore into about 100 pieces... lesson learned! But I do hate having to drag that thing back and forth!
