i have a question, and i dont want folks to shy away from it due to content, this is pre '76 of course...would you have rather purchased/or been given a pup off of dogs that have been kickin ass in the conformation ring, or off dogs that were proven box dogs? i dont wanna hear that "form follows function" crap either cuz there are plenty of lines that threw flawed dogs, but were unstoppable in the []. and im also not implying youd want a pup off working dogs for matching. not saying dogs couldnt have done both, but i wonder would have been more important to you....proven working dam/sire, or a pup off "pretty" parents?

I guess I would want whichever dog had a temperment/personality best suited to me and my lifestyle. So I guess it would depend more upon the individual dog.
Generally speaking dogs that I have are primarily pets so I would be less concerned about where the dog came from and more interested in what characteristics that particular dog had that would make it a good fit for me. ---------- Post added at 11:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:44 AM ---------- I also have a stupid question...why the [] instead of the word? Everyone does it...and I just don't get it. |

I would take a pup from proven parents. I like the drive. I would also expect a dog from proven game dogs be more likely to display the ideal human loving temperment then dogs bred strictly for show or pets.
Of course, this does not mean that I beleive all tested dogs are perfect examples of proper temperment, nor does it mean that breeders of show or pets do not make effort to ensure these traits are present in there dogs. It's a matter of tested dogs being pushed to their limits and still displaying a people friendly temperment, where as show and pets rarely get pushed to that point, so if their man biting threshold is higher than it should be, you may not know until or unless that dog was put into an extreme situation where this can be tested. You could be breeding mildly HA dogs for generations, each possibly getting just a little worse than the last, until one is put into a position to display it. Now you've got a mess of dogs out there breeding more dogs with unsound temperments. |

Temperament should play one of the essential roles in picking up the dog, you must know the parents' temperament too, and if you know the breeder and trust him as he trusts you I think that alone will be enough to get a sound pup if it exist in a said litter. |
