Default simple question
i have a question, and i dont want folks to shy away from it due to content, this is pre '76 of course...would you have rather purchased/or been given a pup off of dogs that have been kickin ass in the conformation ring, or off dogs that were proven box dogs? i dont wanna hear that "form follows function" crap either cuz there are plenty of lines that threw flawed dogs, but were unstoppable in the []. and im also not implying youd want a pup off working dogs for matching. not saying dogs couldnt have done both, but i wonder would have been more important to you....proven working dam/sire, or a pup off "pretty" parents?

Since I am interested in dog sports that exercise my dog's drive and stamina - weight pull, lure tracking, dock diving - I'd look into a game bred dog.

I'd go with proven box dogs, just like I'd go with proven retrievers, proven pointers, proven hunters, etc. If I'm going to buy a dog for a specific purpose, it's going to be the purpose for which the breed was created. If I didn't want that, then I wouldn't choose that breed of dog.

i have no need to think about why i would rather have one off of proven box dogs.i know why i would rather have one that came from proven dogs, and that's not going on here.

I'm not on the fence about the [] but this is definitely not a question I would consider lightly. It would really depend on my life situation, my capability to contain a dog and where and what I wanted to do with it.

I guess I would want whichever dog had a temperment/personality best suited to me and my lifestyle. So I guess it would depend more upon the individual dog.

Generally speaking dogs that I have are primarily pets so I would be less concerned about where the dog came from and more interested in what characteristics that particular dog had that would make it a good fit for me.

I also have a stupid question...why the [] instead of the word? Everyone does it...and I just don't get it.

Probably the proven dog, because it was back when it was legal (or less of a crime), then if I wanted a show dog, I'd go with an Amstaff instead (no I am not saying all Amstaffs are good for is showing).

Off of proven dogs, but more important to me would be who bred the dog.

Other factors how the dog is bred, if there's a tight inbreeding going on I'd be asking about the pup's grand daddy (it could be awesome if he is a daddy too)

I would take a pup from proven parents. I like the drive. I would also expect a dog from proven game dogs be more likely to display the ideal human loving temperment then dogs bred strictly for show or pets.

Of course, this does not mean that I beleive all tested dogs are perfect examples of proper temperment, nor does it mean that breeders of show or pets do not make effort to ensure these traits are present in there dogs.

It's a matter of tested dogs being pushed to their limits and still displaying a people friendly temperment, where as show and pets rarely get pushed to that point, so if their man biting threshold is higher than it should be, you may not know until or unless that dog was put into an extreme situation where this can be tested.

You could be breeding mildly HA dogs for generations, each possibly getting just a little worse than the last, until one is put into a position to display it. Now you've got a mess of dogs out there breeding more dogs with unsound temperments.

As one of the members here said "I can make any dog bite me".
Temperament should play one of the essential roles in picking up the dog, you must know the parents' temperament too, and if you know the breeder and trust him as he trusts you I think that alone will be enough to get a sound pup if it exist in a said litter.

Gimme the game-bred pup. More likely to get traits that make a good bulldog, if he comes from proven [] dogs.

This is true...but if they've never been bred before, I might still take my chances.
