Hi is your pit bull or any breed you may have scared of thunderstorms?
If so what do you do to keep them calm? In the event of a tornado what do you do with your dogs? My two dogs are terrified of thunderstorms ofcourse it doesn't help that I am the most terrifed of all of us. I have witnessed one too many tornadoes in my time. I actually stood on the porch as a teen and took photos of a tornado that wiped out half the structures and neighborhoods in my town. That really bothered me, infact to this day I regret taking those pictures. I guess because people died. So I am terrified of thunderstorms. We are predicted to have some pretty bad ones today and I am looking at tips to help keep my pets calm and see what others do. Also my sister lives in a second floor apartment with her dog and I am worried about how safe she really is. What is he safest place for her in her apartment. She has a middle apartment so her closest backs up to the apartment beside her closet. And next to that is her bathroom. What would be the safest place to be in the event of a tornado? Anyone know? Figured there might be some apartment people on here. She doesn't worry about storms though like I do. Thanks |

My pitx is sometimes afraid if the thunder is REALLY loud. My bassettx couldn't care less! I wipe Hunter (the pitx) down with a dryer fabric softener sheet when the storm starts coming in. It's supposed to get rid of the static electricity. It seems to work. He's not as bad as he used to be before I started doing that. Before he would want to be in my lap at the first sign of a hard wind!
My dogs go into the hallway with us and bunches of pillows, blankets, and a couple of mattresses from sleeper sofas. I know it's hard, but the calmer you are, the calmer your dog will be! We're in for some bad stuff here today too. I would not be in a second floor anything in a tornado! If your sister can't or won't go to a first floor building, the safest place is in an interior room with no outside walls. Sounds like her closet would be the best place. We're supposed to get some nasty stuff here today too. Good luck and try to stay calm. Oh, just in case you don't know, don't "baby" your dog when he's scared. Just try to act normal. |

None of my dogs or cats fear storms. I think Emm may have barked once or twice during one when he had only been here a few days. But nothing since.

Neither of my dogs are scared of storms.
I saw this on it's me or the dog, and I think it's a good idea. Get a noise machine that sounds like thunder, and turn it on the lowest possible noise setting. Any calm behavior from the dog gets a treat. Then amp it up until your at the loudest setting and the dog is calm. We've had a couple tornado warnings in the past, and I would just take Liberty with us into the cedar closet in the basement. |

Well with Troubles heart he is sedated today, we occaisionally have to give him a sedative to calm him for training purposes or when he gets really uptight. And Sasha is glued to me pretty tight. The baby doesn't seem to like the thunder either. This is the first thunderstorm since she was born. I am surprisingly enough pretty calm.

I dont live where there are tornados so I cant answer that (I couldnt handle that, Ill stick with the earth quakes lol) and my pup now is actually very brave. A loud out of the blue, boom suprised us all and made Harley jump but not in a way that he was turly scared.. more suprised.. as it was to all of us (well ok hubby son and dog were just suprised, thunder scares me still... such a baby I know) But growing up I had a dalmatian who was absolutly terrified of thunder or fireworks. We had to sedate her on the 4th of july, we thought she was going to have a heart attack when we didnt (we also had a park around the corner that did a big firework show every year, so that didnt help matters) but durring storms or fireworks we would close all the windows and lay her bed near a tv and turn the tv on to a news channel, something with lots of human voices talking, and that usually always helped. For thunder thats pretty much all we needed to do and we could go about things like normal after we calmed her down with fire works though we had to sedate her and then sit with her because as soon as I (I pretty much always chose to miss the fire works to sit with her) she would try and follow me in her drugged state, made for a funnay show, drunk dog, but she was that scared.
We go to the desert where we set of fire works right by camp and it doesnt bother Harley in the least, hed probably be right there with the people setting them off if he was allowed. Pretty sad though when theres thunder and my 2 year old son and 1 year old dog are fine... but 22 year old me is scared shitless and trying to hide it.... |

I voted sometimes, because one is and one isn't. They don't bother Rosie at all. Nick isn't too bad, but does get a little tense and more alert. He's usually a total couch potato in the evenings, but if there's a storm, he'll get up an pace a little.
He's much worse with fireworks. Rosie kinda likes them, and Nick gets pretty upset. On 4th of July we try to keep the stereo on pretty loud and it's one of the few nights the dogs get to sleep with us. |

Veronica is afraid of thunderstorms.
She never seemed to notice; but then when she was 1 year old I brought her to she some fireworks and they scared the crap out of her. We left immediately as soon as I realized she was scared...but the damage was done...ever since she's been afraid of loud noises (especially if accompanied by bright lights overhead). She doesn't really "freak out" though or do anything destructive...she just goes in her crate and puts her head under her blanket. We had some thunder a few days ago. My husband was outside with the dog. He heard the thunder, looks around the yard for the dog, doesn't see her...then realizes she is at the door waiting to go inside. Once in she promply zoomed upstairs and chilled in her crate. ![]() |

My Greyhound is horrified of T-storms. We had bad ones last night. He was wrapped around my head. The rest of the dogs could care less. They just won't go outside when it is raining.
I usually just ignore him. They were pretty severe last night and I had Casper get on the bed and wedged Ronon in between me and Casper and he calmed down as long he felt someone on either side of him. |

I must say when I was growing up our Female Keeshound was after she got fixed and moved into my grandma's house, she was not until then but man she would do the run around the house barking her head off and run around outside then back in and out it was crazy, we never sedated her but it probably would not have helped much, it was intense.
