Default "What kind of dog is it? ..... oh ....." - short rant
Every time I go through a drive through for a coffee, the girls at Tom Horton's (canada's dunkin donuts) go nuts for my dog. They will say how beautiful she is and how well behaved etc etc.

Then comes the questions - either "is that a boxer?" or "what kind of dog is it?"

Now I'm not someone who will lie about my dog's breed, but I am getting there.

I will tell them that it is a pit bull and then they say "oh".

Conversation is over in a flash.

They saw what a great dog she is but one word will turn them away completely.

I can imagine this is the general plight of all bully owners.

Anyhow that's my rant.

One person (a dog supply shop owner) told me to tell them it is a staffie or just a terrier (something the general public will just say ok cool).

Do you guys do this? I'd feel wrong denying my dog. =p

I haven't had any bad reactions yet, but I say she's an AmStaff mix. Oh, ok. And the conversation is back to her being cute!

I have had reactions like this before. Luckily the guy at the drive-through that I frequent loves pit bulls. The first time he saw him he stopped in the middle of his sentence and went "WOW! That is one beautiful pit bull you have there!"

The way I feel about it is if my dog is behaving well and they think he is adorable, I am proud to say he is a pit bull. I have changed a few minds on the breed by showing off his good behavior. If they don't like it, I couldn't really care less. I didn't get my dog so that everyone else would approve of it. I say be proud of your dog and just tell the truth. Maybe you will get those girls at the drive through to realize that 'pit bulls' aren't so bad after all. And if not...who cares? She's still a great companion

I think the neighborhood I live in is over run with cute little old ladies because when i introduce Puck to them they always say Aww how cuuuuuute. I don't think they know what a pit bull 'is'. Which is fine with me.

I do say amer. staff a lot but that was what he was labeled as when I got him from the rescue...I still see lab or whimerriner or something tall in him though lol but either way if they know that is a type classifyed as a pit bull then I say yes it is and normally get positives but if they do not...like my uncle this last week at the hospital where he saw aww and all this about photos but then commented about a "pit bull" being in his building and he told the land lord if anything happens the dog will be leaveing...I did not say anything to him about the ignorance because I was there for my grandfather and did not want to start a family fued he will learn one day I think.

I have a Terrier mix, she could be mixed with anything. Sweet as can be and a model doggy citizen. But even telling someone she is a terrier mix will end the conversation and people will quickly walk away. Sadly we live in a time where even the word Terrier is taboo. Its sad too, people are missing out on knowing some great dogs.

I tell people that Jersey is a StaffyXMastiff which is what she was labeled as when we adopted her from the shelter. Most people will look at me, grin, and say, so she's a pitbull. I say probably, but to be honest, she is a mixed breed mutt, because her momma was a tramp. LOL.

I agree 100% with Brooke, excellent response. I do not "lie" about my dogs breed to anyone. I do not want to give credit for an excellent dog or temperament to another breed. Every time people deny our dogs breeds, I think that was an opportunity missed to change somone's mind. And as stated above, if it doesn't change the persons mind, who cares??

If you got a pit bull because of what other people think, then there are other issues there. Thanks to everyone out there showing the world what a wonderful breed with have in a responsible way!!

I agree too you shouldn't lie. That is almost telling the person that you are ashamed of your dog. Or if you say shes a blah blah .. and they can tell that it is something else they may thing that you are covering it up what your dog is for a bad reason. My girlfriend was worried about saying what kind ours was around our neighbor hood. She now finds out that the dog across the street is boxer and a couple houses down they are fostering a pit boxer mix. I say tell people with pride and show how good they are.

I always told people what my old bulldog was... One of the reactions was an elderly couple, I was sitting outside of a coffee shop with her, she had her pink coat on and her rose ears sticking out all cute like... The woman asked if she was friendly, her name, yadda yadda, while she was petting her she asked if she was a boxer mix, I said no, a pit mix... She patted her head one more time before walking away, and being older said loudly when she thought I was out of earshot "Damn PIT BULL, wearing pink, named Tinkerbell. I've seen it all."

Just ignore it... Educate kindly where you can, be polite, and don't give people a reason to think your dog is bad.

I get it all of the time, and its always when my dogs are together, but I never say pit bull, I say that one is an APBT and that one is Ambully, they always look confused, and say I havent heard of an APBT but i have a pitbull and mine is way bigger than both of them

Most people say Tyson looks like their 4 month old "blue pit"

He is shorter and very small in general lol

Oh the best one was last week I had Tyson walking around the little circle track here, this dude said, oh that BT is cute I have a blue pit thats the same color, I said ummmm BT? He said Boston Terrier, I breed pits and that baby guy could be pretty close to them with a bigger head and shorter, hahaha I just walked away.

I never deny my dog, she is great and that is the end of the story.

I also agree with being proud she is a pitbull and changing people's minds about the breed. My entire family was in shock when I told them what she was but they all love her now - and she is better behaved than 95% of the dogs we meet anyhow.

My gf's mother reaction was literally "it is going to eat all the babies" - as my gf had 2 new nieces and a nephew. Meanwhile her dog, a minature sheltie growls at the babies and has nipped at tons of people.

I wouldn't mind people not liking my dog if they all weren't so retarded.

Just remember... you can't fix stupid.

I get some raised eye brows every now and then, but Bella is so friendly, that people who do raise their eye brows usually say, "Wow, she is really a great dog.. I guess they aren't all like what you see on the news"... which then leads me into my rant about the irresponsible owners vs. the responsible ones.

Mollie is DA, so I don't take her very many places where there are other dogs. Sometimes she does great, sometimes not. So I avoid taking her places with lots of dogs that will overwhelm her.

HAHAHAHAHA

I tell them Abby is Amstaff because she is.
I have owned APBT before and it would depend on the situation and the person I have had neighbors that I knew would cause me grief and I lied also lied to a landlord. but this was always done to protect the dog from Stupid people

I tell ppl that Luna is an Amstaff and I have gotten the response "oh that's just a pretty name for a pit bull". Then I tell them that she's not an apbt but I wouldn't mind if she was because they are amazing dogs too.

you'll get used to it, every where I go it's a beautiful dog that everyone wants to pet until they hear American Pitbull Terrier. They know it is too but it seems the words scare them. It's hard not to respond with "of course he's friendly, I feed him kitty cats"lol. Its been amstaff lately . Some communities LOVE pitbulls it just depends on how much brainwashing they've been subjected to by the media.

I usually get positive reactions with my dog. I once went through the drive through at Wendy's with my pitbull Boss, and the guy at the window gave him a plateful of hamburger patties, which was greatly appreciated by my hog of a pitbull. The only trouble was when Boss tried to actually climb through the window of my car into the window of the drive through to get more hamburgers
