Default To License or not...advice needed
Hey folks,

I'm new here but I figured this would be a good opportunity to ask a question that has been on my mind since getting Luna, my 5 month old Amstaff girl. The city I live in requires you to license all dogs over the age of 4 months. This makes me nervous as a community a few hours away has taken on a ban of all pitbulls without a grandfather clause. So my concern is if this happened in Neguac what's keeping it from happening in my town? How do you folks feel about licensing your dogs? Am I being too paranoid?

i would license. if they do ban in your town but grandfather dogs in then you would be covered.
your town requires licensing dogs so following thru is the respoinsible thing to do

I hear where your coming from and that's what I'm thinking too but in the case I mentioned there is NO grandfather clause....it's surrender your animal or move. That just frightens me enough to not want to be compliant!

I licensed mine as terriers. No one said anything. That way, they are covered in a grandfather clause, but "terriers" is a pretty big catagory. I would license either way, even if I had to be specific.

To make sure I had the grandfathering nailed, I also microchipped. That way, there's no question about my ownership and dates on it.

Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't, eh? I actually just got mine yesterday. Never really sure myself if it's ''smart'' or not. My responsibility may come back and bite me in the but.

i know how you feel. we all know who we can thank for these stupid "pitbull" bans and BSL bs....
the irresponsible dumbass idiots who own our bulldog/bully breeds and Mixes.

And let's not close our eyes and plug our ears while singing LALALALALALA and instead remember why B.S.L. is being enacted in the first place: IRRESPONSIBLE 'PIT BULL' OWNERS. No one else brought B.S.L. upon us. 'Pit bulll' owners brought B.S.L. upon 'pit bull' owners. Now it's time to govern ourselves and remove the dogs from the hands of those who do not need them and/or are the ones responsible for this entire mess in the first place.

You could register them as "mixed". That's what I'm going to do with Lily. That's what it says on her rabies cert and her microchip info.

I'm thinking about licensing her as a mix. The ban that is in effect in Neguac states that any dog that appears to be Amstaff, APTB...is included in the restricted and banned dog list. So I'm not sure licensing her as a mix would help really cause she certainly does appear to be an Amstaff. I am getting her microchipped so I may just hold off on the license until I can talk with my vet. I'm with the person who said they would move if a ban came into effect, without a doubt or second thought!

ohhh that changes everything. that puts you between a rock and a hard place. when it was time for Peanut to be licensed the county sent me a letter that i had 10 days to comply or they would send an officer out to my house at my expense. i kind of had no choice so i licensed him.
how do you get the option to license them as something other than what they are? the paper that i got in the mail had Peanut listed as APBT though his color they had wrong. i would have liked to put him as something else but luckily for me my area is safe for now against BSL

You want a straight up answer ?
So that the government agency, in this regard Animal Control, can run their shelter where they might put your dog and not care about it.

do you think you could pull off Lab/boxer mix most people have no clue looking at the photos might be possible my monitor is not very good needs replaced so I may be wrong most people that support the BSL have no clue. I had a White APBT with black and brindle spots I told everyone she was a Boxer Dalmatian mix. and was never questioned on it just a an idea. I know if they find you with her after BSL is passed will be harder to convince she is not APBT than to register her as the mix now chances are you show the paperwork even have the vet list her that way you will not be hassled

Where I live you get the paper to register your dog from the vet at the time you get the Rabies shot and they get the breed from what was entered by the vet at the time you got the rabies shot

I would license. The first step in reversing BSL is by showing your county/city/town that owners of pit bull-type dogs are responsible. This doesn't only inlcude socializing/training your dog, but obeying leash laws and other animal laws/ordinances. If your laws/ordinances require a dog to be licensed, then follow through and do this in a timely manner. Your dog's breed is not banned in your area currently, so registering as a responsible bully breed owner will show them that one more owner is responsible. Plus, if you incorrectly submit information on a government document it could get you into some seriously hot legal water, as well as basically screw up the responsible owner's reputations in your area that are trying to do it the honest way.

I completely agree and have my dog licensed as a pit bull (she came from a shelter) for all the above reasons cited. In the event that a breed ban goes into effect and there is a grandfather law, your licensing record(s) for your dog will be proof of how long you've had your dog. If there is no allowance for dogs to be grandfathered in, it probably wouldn't matter if your pit bull was licensed as a poodle because they will most likely go by visual identification (i.e. someone's opinion).
