Default Traveling with dogs
(not sure if this is the right board or not, so if not, it can be moved)

DH & I are going to Utah in June for a family reunion, we're taking the dogs with us. They both ride well in the car, have their bed, water bowl, etc in it.
I plan on taking my notebook with all their records, they are mircochipped & have up to date tags. They have their plain collars w/tags, I'll also take martingales & prong collars. Each dog will also have a short & long leash, and we'll take tie out cables, a portable pen and a battery operated fan.
We'll take plenty of their normal food and I'll mix plain yogurt with their meals.
Oh, and of course a first aid box for the dogs (and humans)
We'll either be traveling in a Honda Element and staying in a pet friendly motel, or (hopefully) an extended cab truck and 5th wheel.

Any other travel tips?
I've never done much traveling so I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks!

I don't think you could get more prepared than that. Just don't forget the poo bags.

Usually they don't eat as much. So if they don't eat, don't freak out, its very normal.

Sounds like you are very well prepared. Do you seat belt them in the vehicle? I have started doing this with Mollie and Bella. The thought of possibly getting pulled over for speeding and opening the car do and one of them bolting and either getting shot, hit by a car or taking off and not returning (which I could see Mollie do), terrifies me. So now, I make sure they are restrained and can't get out of the vehicle. Too many incidents of dogs getting shot when bolting from the vehicle has been enough to convince me that it's better to have them restrained in the car.

I know you guys will have a blast, and we want pictures. I can only suggest adding some Dramamine in case they get car sick, Benadryl for allergy breakouts, and maybe throw in a can of solid pumpkin to your kit, just in case someone gets an upset stomach.

lol, mine is still a food whore on a long road trip/camping. So were the Ridgebacks. We did drug Lynley on the long stretches because of how excited and loud he gets. And we had to put the Evo in the soft bag on the roof because he was trying to guard it.

We also got pulled over and the Ridgebacks didn't even bark so that was awesome. That they didn't try to guard, not that we got pulled over..

Dogs are so fun.

Sounds like you are good to go! Just remember to kinda alter their feeding and toileting schedule before you go for any long stretches. Don't need any accidents! Reminds me of when I was young and going on road trips and me or my brother would throw up. You never get rid of that smell lol.

Thanks everyone!!
I've forgot to mention the poop bags, but they are attached to the leashes and I always carry extra in my car.
They are not seatbelted in, we have the seats up in the back of my Element and they stay back there. The only place either dog has every tried to get out before being told they could is at my moms. Rosie used to spend summer days there and gets super excited, she just can't contain herself. LOL
It's something I work on everytime I take them anywhere (which is quite often) I tell them to stay, open a door and walk away and they stay until they are released.

All that preparing - you might get an hour away and realize you forgot the dogs !! LOL as if they'd let us leave!! Even going to work, Rosie walks me to the door, hoping she gets to come.

Don't worry!! I'll be taking at least one camera!
It's official, I turned in my vacation slip at work today!

My friend and I took Liberty with us to Kansas, in a Yaris hatchback. She slept most of the time. When we got to a rest stop, I'd run her up and down hills and let her get some energy out. We stopped every 6hrs or so, so we could all pee, and she only ate when we were settled where we were staying for the night (she'd eat when we got there at night, then eat before we left again in the morning).
I believe she had a much better time than we did.
We took her as a bad-person deterrent, since 2 girls traveling cross country can get a bit iffy.
Have fun! I love road trips. Maybe I'll take one this summer.... now you've got me thinking.
