What is it about head growth that has people going mad over it? Am I missing something?

I don't know but I signed up to buy a dog not a hammerhead shark so I am measuring his weight to make sure he's gaining well as a pup and less concerned with his little wrinkly fugly head.

There are many different "types" in the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. Each type matures differently, and has a different conformation. Perhaps a picture of the pup and his pedigree would be more helpful for us.

Your dog is nowhere near fully developed at 5 months old.

why in the world would you buy a dod at 4 weeks old (well if that is when you took it home) it is illegal (I think in ALL 50 states) to sell a dog before its 7 or 8 weeks old

At 5 months old, your dog is not developed enough... however, if you are expecting the "big head", then what you are wanting is an AmBully, and not an American Pit Bull Terrier.

First of all, whoever sold you the dog at 4 weeks old might as well sold you the hang papers too. No reputable breeder will sell a dog at 4 weeks old unless there are unavoidable circumstances (bitch refuses the pups, etc), and even then most responsible breeders do not sell their dogs just to get rid off them.
Second, did you buy a dog solely for the papers?

It's sad that people place so much emphasis on looks. At 5 months you would have NO idea what your boy is going to look like at maturity. I don't get the big head thing, either???

Purebred APBT are usually 35-65 lbs. Why are you concerned about head size on a 5 month old dog?

Just so you know, APBT weren't bred for their head size... and not having a head like an anvil does not mean your puppy is a mutt.

I think the OP was wanting an American Bully & got a American Pit Bull Terrier instead. Be happy. lol. In all likelyhood you got the better dog!

Blessings ...

Do you have a pedigree on your dog? How much does he weigh right now? 20-30lbs at his age right now should be about right.

I still don't get the whole "My dog has a small head its not purebred thing"

Makes no sense to me

where do you get that anyone thought you were going to fight your dog?
I do not see that in anything anyone said....
folks were just questioning why the head size was an issue....
and you can not tell them just to shut up if it does not make sense to them... apbt are not known for their head size.. so I can understand your question not making sense to them.. the ball is now in your court to explain your issue with head size... when you explain your concerns and post a pic, maybe then someone can answer your questions, or tell you that the head size is in direct proportion to your dogs body...
we can not tell you if you have a problem or not, until we know what the perceived problem is.... we do not know if the dog has a small head or if your concerns are ill founded.... relax a little, get the chip off of your shoulder and maybe you will get the answers you need...

There is a DNA test you can have done on your dog.. but they are highly inaccurate.

APBT's are not suppose to have huge heads and when you ask a question about being concerned of his head size, that sends a message to me (and maybe other people) that maybe you were in the market for an American Bully who have larger heads and a stockier body set.

And I didn't see anyone accuse you of dog fighting..

Nobody said you were fighting your dog or insinuated that.

Head size has nothing to do with how the dog will turn out; it depends on the individual dog IMO. APBTs don't have huge heads you are thinking of. Yes they are blocky in a slim way, but not huge as they shouldn't be.

It hurts when they hit your head though since they are so blocky.

American Bullies have the huge heads. I hope that made some sense!

There is a DNA test you can have done but they are very, very inaccurate and very expensive and not even worth the money.

Post up some pics! We would love to see him!

I agree... you can try the DNA test, I'm not sure how much it costs, and it may be different prices at different vets, so check around and see how much the prices vary.

No one accused you of wanting to do anything illegal with your dog. You questioned the size of the head, and you were accurately told that in all likelihood, you wanted an AmBully (big heads) vs. an APBT (medium size dogs with normal size heads).

Post some pictures of your pup so we can all check him out.. and try not to get so defensive... with this breed, you have to learn to have a thick skin, and you can't fly off the handle when someone questions you or makes a comment on your post. As long as you love him and you are being a responsible owner, then you can't go wrong.
