I need help explaining bsl to someone more than just the simple "they ban dogs". As my uncle is comeing over and he is very for bsl, and he hates HATES my dogs (even the ones who aren't bully, my chow mix, and gsd mix). And i'd like to explain to him the problems with BSL. I usually get pretty worked up about it but this time i'm gonna try not to. Any advice on what should be said.
My Uncle Hates the apbt, the gsd, the dobie, the rottie, the gsd, the chow, just about any dog with a bad reputation ---------- Post added at 09:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ---------- I'd also like to add that despite my dogs good behavior, he swears they are going to "snap",while his golden mix has growled at me on numerous occasions and yet it's still the perfect angel in his eyes. |

Are you open to culling your uncle?
Just kidding, of course. Calmly explain to your uncle why discriminating against a certain breed is akin to racism. Explain that just like humans, dogs will have offspring that vary in temperament and personality. Explain that while APBTs were bred for gameness and DA, they were also bred to be extra-cuddly towards people. For those reasons, and many more that I'm sure you can think of, BSL is ridiculous. Explain your love for your dogs, and then ask if it is fair for us to ban something that he loves because we have an irrational fear of it. Tell him that half of all shelter dogs euthed every years are pits or pit mixes, and BSL is really just contributing to this doggy genocide. I feel that the best thing that you can do when someone claims that your dog will "snap" is to ask them WHY they are so sure it will snap. And then, calmly remind them that "JUST BECAUSE" is not really a reason at all. Lastly, ask him why he feels that the rumors he has heard are more accurate then your years of hands on experience with the breed. And if he still doesn't agree with you, kindly point him in the direction of the next KKK meeting. |
