I think this would be a great idea! I would like to get your opinion on specific literature/videos/whatever to have potential adopters go over prior to adopting a pit. I ONLY foster "pits" so I would like to get together some sort of prerequisite package for my applicants. Thoughts?

IMHO, that is what all rescue should do, I have one rescue that I am currently working with ( wholesale wise on my product ) that is incorperating giving out a breakstick with every dog they adopt out. |

You want to drive your point....hand them a breakstick. When they ask whats its for tell them, that will open up some eyes as to what they may be dealing with. ![]() ![]() ---------- Post added at 11:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:40 AM ---------- A few Stratton books, the complete gamedog or pit bull bible and a few match reports to start with. It should be for rescues aswell otherwise it is a bit hypocritical. ---------- Post added at 11:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:40 AM ---------- Anything that anybody sends, regardless of my opinion will be given to the applicant. I obviously cant give 500 things but if I widdle it down to even 20 pages, a video, and some pictures thatd be fine. |

reading only gets you so far. you wanna leave a lasting impression with a person and make sure they are ready? show them the nature of these dogs. maybe walk a dog with them in a relatively mellow environment and point out potential problems as you go. yeah i know that sounds like a risky deal, but like i said, you can read all you want, imo that doesnt make you ready.

As Colbydogs posted, in every prerequisite package there should be a breakstick with instructions on how to use it. ![]() ---------- Post added at 01:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:12 PM ---------- reading only gets you so far. you wanna leave a lasting impression with a person and make sure they are ready? show them the nature of these dogs. maybe walk a dog with them in a relatively mellow environment and point out potential problems as you go. yeah i know that sounds like a risky deal, but like i said, you can read all you want, imo that doesnt make you ready. |

I cant afford to give everyone breaksticks and books. I can explain what a breakstick is and take parts of the books copied. I just really cant afford to give everyone about $50 worth the items You can send me a PM if your ever interested, your in the same state so im sure we can even work around the shipping charges to help reduce the cost more. |

My partner and I offer wholesale pricing, its not that expensive when you buy in bulk. You can always add in the cost with the adoption fee to recover your invested money. |

have the breakstick be a Req. for them to get the dog, they must get it prior to you giving them the dog and such, also I think mandatory training classes, where they call you up and tell you the class and you verify. A really good one would be them getting on this forum, before you hand them the dog, to learn, read stories and such. Drive home the no dog parks, have some stories from here on that subject. I would also make them take a test, not a huge test, but a what to do, how to do this sorta test. I would tell them the importance of good kibble (if the dog has been in your posetion for a while then the kibble they are on) and the potential allergies that often occur with this breed. And what Woody D said too.

I think a breakstick is mandatory with this breed and how to properly use one.
Strike up a friendly conversation mentioning NO dog parks and why you shouldn't take one to the dog park. You can print up packets and copy them where ever you have a printer store (We have insty prints here) and they can print stuff up for you. Like articles from bad rap and how to crate and rotate, etc. Also ask them why they want an APBT or 'bully' breed. I for one think they should be experienced dog owners even if they haven't had a bully breed before; they need to understand the breed. They need to know what they are getting into and this breed is not anything like other breeds. If they are experienced, that's fine. I would also mention about them not needing dog buddies and they can have DA at anytime and should never leave their dogs unsupervised. Even if they believe oh if they grow up together, they'll be just fine. Explain to them that's not the case and they need to have a thick skin owning this breed. Also a good thing would be having them join here if possible. They can learn so much here. Also they need to make the dog a bully ambassador and get their CGC and possibly their TT (temperment test) .. ![]() Also explain that they need the highest quality food and not a grocery store kibble as they are very prone to allergies. Sorry for the long post. ![]() |
