Default New Law Against Animal Abuse in China

Dogs and Cats Off Menus in China?

Under a new law against animal abuse in China, individuals caught eating either cat or dog meat could face a fine of 5,000 yuan (approximately $735) or up to 15 days in prison. Businesses involved in the practice could be fined up to 500,000 yuan (or $7,325), according to the Times Online.

The draft going to Parliament in April would be the first law against animal abuse by a new, increasingly animal-loving Chinese society that no longer has the taste for canine and feline meat.

Dog meat appeared in Chinese cuisine as early as the third century B.C. and is long believed to provide warmth to those who eat it. Restaurants offering dog -- or "fragrant meat" as it's often poetically referred to -- appear throughout the entire nation. Its "warming" property makes it particularly popular in winter stews and the frigid northeastern region of China.

Cat meat, however, is primarily consumed by the people of the southern Guangdong province. Cat is not as popular because of an old superstition that the feline will come back at night to retaliate.

Waking up to a vengeful minx? No thanks. We'll leave the tail-wagging eating to Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain.

Even though that law doesn't affect me I am against it because it is their tradition and custom to eat that type of meat yet they are being threatened with jail time so that China will look less savage and more appealing to foreigners.

How can you be against it? China is all about stifling personal rights and freedom and doing whatever the government says. Well, this is what they are now saying.

The problem is, where are they going to get all of their meat from now? The world can't sustain sufficient animals for everyone to eat meat like the western world does and as everyone becomes more wealthy, they don't want stupid rice. Paradoxically however, dogs are claimed to have a HUGE carbon footprint, similar to driving a big SUV so maybe the environmental effects of farming pork will be less than eating dogs.

China will look less savage and more appealing to foreigners Do you think that is the real reason and not this:

a new, increasingly animal-loving Chinese society that no longer has the taste for canine and feline meat. I don't know?

I am not for it or against it because I live in the US and not China.

I'm against it for exactly some of the reasons you have said. People outside China know but don't really care what happens to the chinese but are seriously offended by chinese people eating dogs and cats. The chinese government knows that this is worse publicity than all the repression they carry out so they ban it. If they have been doing it for centuries I don't see why they can't continue doing so.

Because they don't want to be showing themselves to the world as a bunch of pricks. Compared to Japanese whalers they are folding rather easily.

I don't see how it is abusive to eat the meat. If they want to change the laws for how to kill the animals, then I'd understand that, but to not to allow it at all doesn't make sense to me.

But luckily, I don't live in China, so, what does it matter what I think, lol.

So you can't eat a dog in china but its ok to murder prisoners for their organs, or throw people in jail for questioning the gov.

Yea I dont think its about animal rights I am guessing it is something else. It is the same place that I have heard some serious horror stories from friends who lived there, and I dont mean one or two I mean all of them.

Have you ever seen a pig farm, they are a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEE environmental issue! I grew up around one and they had to shut down because the shit from the farm broke through the pool (literally a lake) they had lined with plastic and made it into the water supply. After that I did my research and realized animal farming as a whole is RIDICULOUS in the scope of environmental damage.
