do we even know that this guy HAS dog stealing, AC calling neighbors? has that ever been mentioned as a concern of his? on that vein, he probably shouldn't keep the dog in the house while he's gone, because what if one of these fiendish neighbors breaks in while he's at work for his 10 hour day? heck, they could get a puppy and a TV for their trouble. there will be no one in the house to protect the pup while he's gone right? maybe it should just be that if you can't keep your dog physically with you 24/7, than you can't be considered fit to own one. shelters and breeders alike should shun you, and AC officers should prowl your streets...

I'm not precisely sure where his house located but I do know Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida State...

How could anybody possibly predict or know if anybody would have an issue with dog "STEALING"? Do these dog thieves make a special announcement or go door to door asking if it's okay to steal the dogs? Also, LOGICALLY, the puppy will be way more vulnerable to dog thieves being outside than inside...Yes, it is VERY Possible for a dog to be stolen from a thief who broke into the home, Lord knows it's happened before. The odds are much GREATER though with the pup being outside. Simple Logic. Now, don't you think your overreacting with this 24/7 our stuff...come on now...

What we're basically saying is one, the pup is too young to be left alone outside...it is only 11 weeks old. We also have been giving him advice and our OPINIONS... To me, IMO, there are numerous safety issues. Ultimately, it's his decision and nobody, to my knowledge, has condemned this person for pondering the notion or even with him keeping the puppy outside...We're simply offering him Ideas, stuff to think about...Concerns of ours that we're sharing with him on a public forum.

Another thought: if you're worried about people stealing him(which is definitely possible on a chain set up and less likely but still possible with a kennel), maybe you could keep him in a crate and hire someone to c ome let him out during the day/walk him? 10 hours is too long in a crate but depending on weather/crime, keeping him outside may not be good, either.

Actually, if you would rather keep him inside until he is a bit bigger, I've seen kinda mini free standing kennels that could actually go inside the house if you have the space. They sell them as outside kennels for small dogs.

I think i'm with retro on this. There's a lot of paranoia of areas in which they don't even live. If the risks aren't too great and the pup has some shelter I'd have him outside as I don't want a molly-coddled retarded dog when its older that won't go outside on it's own and if it does it screams the place down for its 'mommy'.

Default Moving my dog from inside to outside
My pup that's 11 weeks old, i'll be switching him to a outside dog. I'm going to move his crate outdoors on the back porch which has a roof over it. Going to put him on bout a 25' chain and cover his crate to keep him warm.

I'm kinda worried bout the chap and his happiness. Tho he may enjoy it even more cause he'll have more freedom. His current situation is we lock him in his crate while we're at work, about 10 hours a day. So maybe this maybe better for him.

Is 11 weeks too young?

I believe he might be too young. Keep in mind a young pup can be taken off by a hawk. How big is he? Size and location will be a big factor, and weather (though, I guess it's not too cold in Florida, lol).

Yeah that's a good consideration, but he's too big for a hawk. I'd say he weighs about 20-25 lbs. A golden eagle yeah, but I don't think there's too many round my parts.

Actually, and this is coming from a wuss to the cold, it does get quite cold in Florida...I'm a little north of Tampa and it's known a few times of the year to get below 30 degrees (usually at night) Now that is FREEZING...

I actually get real cold with anything from 65 degrees and less wind has major issues with the feel like temp as well.

I do think 11 weeks would be too young. I do have issues with leaving dogs outside but it's mainly because I have a serious distrust of people in general. I don't look down on the people who do keep dogs outside as long as they're cared for properly.

OK...I see where you're coming from...

But i don't think people who have a large dog in the house all the time should have dogs. I'd think a dog would enjoy being in the yard more. I mean I have a lot of backyard.

LOL! People can say what they want, but FLA gets cold. It's cold outside to me right now and it's prob 60.

I wouldn't just leave my pup outside 24 hours a day. When we get home from work I'd let him in with me. I just think it'll be better than being cramped in his crate for 10 hours per day. Plus our cat keeps him company.

on another tip, your dog will eventually do fine outside. but i do agree with CHJ and the majority of the people on here. wait till your pups around 6 months or even longer it just doesnt seem to be a good idead to keep such a young pup on a chain.

I'd worry about him getting stolen at that age but maybe you don't have that problem in your area. I don't know about others on here but I would wait till at least 16 weeks. And I don't know how cold and windy it gets in Florida but my dogs love the hay. Built my two a big dog house and put in lots of hay, at first only had the pillows in there but now they can dig in and sorta make nests in there.

And I don't think there is anything wrong with a dog living outdoors, sometimes with my dogs one or the other comes inside and usually they don't want to stay long. Can't imagine keeping them in a crate part of their lives.

It just goes to show that people have different opinions!

I'd be worried at any age. People steal Pits all the time. Someone stole two of my friends three year old Pits...two different occasions!

I had to throw Goren outside when my parents came (they own the house and no dogs are supposed to be in it) well after I put his bed out he has not whined...well he did get caught on the tree 2 times so he could not get to his bed then he wined but now whe has it down pat, been out there since Monday morning and is loveing it. He would not go out in the summer time it was to hot for him but he is takeing to the fall...I was scared he would whine at the 35 degree weather last night but I tossed his bed in the doghouse (its cramped for him I have one from petsmart I just baught comming the 16th or so that I build myself, I cant wait...but till then he has to deal with a medium size one he can fit in but its TIGHT) well he loves being outside now and does not bark at all or whine I think he likes the smells and sights he is seeing...I would not however put a dog so young outsided, Goren is going to be a year next month, if he were 11 weeks...or even 6 months I would question it..maybe now while I was in class and such for the day but not at night that young.

another issue may be...if he barks all day...how close are your neighbors?

Pending on how close your neighbors are...you really should be considerate to them and it may prevent difficulties later...

yes this is a good thing to consider, I would plan to start training if you are going to leave your pup outside in the day by doing it on days your home...dont go out and see what is wrong when he barks or anything you know but if you can tell its not going to work yet its best you find out when your home instead of getting a complaint or angry neighbor that might take matters into there own hands instead of telling you
