Default DNA My Dog...
I just saw that the test is now available in Canada and am thinking about it... cost is $60... How many of you have DNAed your dog and what were the findings?

I have heard it's BS too. Someone DNA tested a dog at the shelter where I volunteer when they adopted her. She was part lab and weimaraner and it said she was mostly shar pei which she was not.

It could be interesting but I don't think I'd waste my money on that especially if it's BS. But you can do whatever you want, just saying it isn't 100% accurate.

If I had money to spare, I might get it done. Of course, that would only be after I had made sure that everything had been bought that needed buying, and we were stocked up on food, dog food, and all the other essentials. So yeah, if I had money laying around, I might do it just out of curiosity. But I'm not sure how accurate it is.... of course, on Maury, it's 100% correct.... you are not the father. (sorry, couldn't help myself )

None of the tests I looked at included the APBT. One even said they're not even going to put the APBT on their breed list due to possible legal reprecussions.

ABK I think you're right, they don't list pitbull... So then, all our dogs would come up as mixed breeds? And BSL would not apply?

Most dogs are ACK, so the only thing that might show up is AmStaff, but the tests are not reliable. There's a video on here somewhere of a woman who tested her Amstaff, who was backed up with a multiple generation pedigree, and it came back with border collie and a couple other breeds.

Yeah, so far the only DNA test for dogs that is currently accurate is to prove the Sire and Dam are really the Sire and Dam of your dog. Not to prove the breed.

I thought that was pretty cool. If I had a bunch of money to blow, I'd do them just for fun, but I don't think they're very accurate. But hey who knows! one might come out right.

LOL that test she used did not even have Amstaff listed as a breed it recognized. Jeffers sells the one she used. The test is from Bio-Tech. And they do not have Staffordshire or Amstaff listed as one of the recognized breeds. I am wondering why she used this one that does not recognize anything but Bulldog. And if her dog is an AKC registered AM Staff why wouldn't she opt for a test that recognize AM Staff. And Bio Tech clearly states it does not. And you do it yourself. But if you are going to try and prove a DNA test wrong and does not work use one that does at least recognize your breed. And Bulldog does not cover everything.

Really? HA! I thought she was using one that had AmStaff in their database. That was a pretty sneaky AND crappy thing for her to do.
I still wouldn't waste my hard earned money on any of them though.

And that's what I don't understand: why are DNA tests done to ID a pitbull type dog if they're not even in the database?

Honestly, I think a lot of pit bull owners are doing it to prove they're dogs are NOT pit bulls to avoid problems with landlords, insurance companies, and BSL. Unfortunately for those folks, it doesn't matter. "pit bull" is defined by certain physical characteristics when there is a ban or restriction in place, and they don't give two flips about what a DNA test has to say. If it LOOKS like a pit bull, it IS a pit bull. (in the eyes of the uninformed breed haters)

I think the Wisdom Panel MX has the most breed markers.

However the test she used is this.

yes when i first heard about dna breed testing i was thinking about doing it for pilot because i wanted to know what mix she was. but after doing research i found that none of the tests included american pit bull terrier or the other bully breeds she might possibly be mixed with. i gave up after learning that.

I did the Wisdom Panel dna test on my dog. They only tesy for akc breeds, so no apbt. His test came back faint traces of amstaff and distant traces of st bernard. Luckily the traces of st bernard are very faint as he only weighs 42 pounds. He mostly just looks like an ampbt.

That is the problem wth ALL DNA tests. If they can not find your dog's breed it willplac eit in the closest breed to your dogs marker.
