Default Walking leashed - how to deal with the unleashed
Because I am getting really fedup with them! I walk my two behaved pitties, a female and an 8-month old pup. After 3 days a many liver treats, my female has now gotten less reactive when seiing other dogs. Nonetheless, it is very, very annoying to be walking with two leashed dogs and have to deal with the sudden appearance of an unleashed dog. One was a female, the pup humped her, she growled, my female went in and the owner put his hands in when he got there and got bitten, he walks her leashed now. Another one was a male, I screamed to the guy on his bike to call back his dog, I yelled back "my dog's fine"... I yelled back that I had a female and pup, he panicked and frantically called his dog back to no avail and when he got there and grabbed his dog by the collar, I could not help tell him that if anything happened to my dogs I'd sue his ass... Generally, when I ask people to leash their dog they tell me to f%$/ off...

So, how do you guys handle situations like that?

hehehe in Mexico we dont have laws related to leashing your dog. So trust me.. I have to deal with this every single f*** day.

I do something that people will probably tell me that is a very stupid thing to do... I get in the middle, before any fight starts, even before they are too close I just stand in the middle, my dogs back to me. And make sure the other dog notices me, it has worked with mixed results for me.. but its just some much sh*** I have to go through everyday I dont even want to see if the other dog is friendly if it gets too close he is getting a very nice hello from my foot.

4 months ago I was walking a schnauzer a jack russell and a cocker spaniel, this guy walking with a GSD and a Rottie (only the rottie on leash but it was a just for show the dog was pulling him at his leisure), so they got in our way the GSD sees my dogs and rushes like hell towards them.. this time me getting in the middle obviously didnt do anything as the dog already had his mind set.. thankfully even though my dogs can be DA (funny because their so small) they responded well to me and they stayed back to me so here I am going in circles pushing the freaking GSD with my knees just to get my dogs out of his way.. the dog never redirected which is good (and that is why I decided not to hit him, I didnt want to provoke him either) just push him away and going in circles until the owner was able to tie his dog to a fence (the rottie) and then come to get the other one.. man I wanted to get into a fight with the owner real bad...

Last sunday.. 11 PM me walking my dogs again, a Weimeramer comes again rushing straight for my dogs with all the signs (lower head, growling, ears back) this time I get in the middle the dog sees me and makes a detour and stops at a tree 3 meters away from us, its owner just comes says "Leo come back and the dogs goes"... not even an I'm sorry... man.

I dont really recommend what I do! but hell I get so mad I jump right in with my dogs sometimes... when I had bigger dogs.. I would sometimes let them have it if I knew my dog(s) could handle it, if the owner is irresponsible its not my fault.. I dont know if that happens with Kaiser what I would do... I will probably not walk him in public a lot and try to stay in more private spaces for him to get his exercise, (I dont have that much experience with pitbulls fighting so I will avoid that as much as I can.. as I did with my other dogs as much I as I could)

I'm sorry I was so caught in telling my story.. I forgot, my wife uses one of those air horns she says that works fine most of the time if you do it with correct timing.. and I just read somebody at a different threat saying something about a spray...

my dog whines and cries to get to other dogs and when I tell people to "get their f'ing dogs back" they usually answer "my dog is a good dog, and they just wanna play!"
well... it's NOT because he whines and cries to get to yours that it's just all play! it gets so frustrating as I know my dog is all about fighting when it comes to other dogs...

I have resorted to take a muzzle with me everywhere I go because I came to find that even when 3 small dogs are attacking your "pit bull", or any mix that looks like one, he will be the bad one for defending itself

I'm sick of having to run around in circles to keep the other dog infront of me and my dog behind me so he won't be able to reach to the other dog, so a muzzle works fine for me...

I use pepper spray. It has worked twice. But I know it is not infallible.

I have in the past also used threatening movement and throwing rocks at the loose dog. That has worked too. I know the aggressiveness on my part makes me more vulnerable to being attacked, but I don't know what else to do to protect my dog. (I am not worried about him hurting another dog; it would probably be the other way around).

I agree with this and it sucks because I love walking my dogs but not when I am going to run into unleashed dogs. So I go other places if I want to take both dogs we walk around towns or on busier streets where there are no dogs or always leashed dogs. If I only have time for the neighborhood, I wait for the hubby and we walk together or I walk them one at a time. People really piss me off when it come to leashing there dogs but there is nothing I can do about it so I would around it. My dogs (this breed) is worth it.

P.S. I use the blow horn and it works wonders for dogs in our neighborhood!

I've heard pepper spray, or that bear mace. Also the blow horn might be good. I'm glad I live in the country... we still have dogs running loose, most are dumped out there by people that don't want their dogs anymore. But it's not as bad as it was when I lived in the city.

I know that Mace is forbidden in Canada... I'll check to get the pepper spray!

This has been a problem in my area. And actually I think it is worse in the rural area as opposed to walking in town because people out in the country sometimes think that no rules apply out here! It can indeed be very frustrating.

I have started out on a walk with my dogs and had to turn around because of a neighbors loose dogs, (about 4 to 5 small ones). They acted so aggressive to my dogs and to myself and daughter. The neighbor was outside just watching the chaos and my daughter was so upset we just turned around and went back home. Honestly, I was afraid for their dogs because I know mine would kill them just to protect myself. I just wasn't in the mood to see that.

We actually have better luck walking our dogs in town so far. The only problem is that I don't like to always have to drive to town just to walk my dogs, especially with the price of gas. Maybe the airhorn idea would work.

My son does live in town and if he should by chance come across a dog off leash while walking his dog he just boots it into the air (if its small enough), and he will do this right in front of its owner. He figures its better than his dog getting ahold of it!

I have done these things too.Pepper spray/bear spray works on non-windy days, use it on windy days, you'll get a most unpleasent blow back effect,if downwind.I have thrown rocks, waved sticks, and puffed up as big as i could yelling as loud as i could and made hostile gestures. That detterred them at the time.I also think a taser would drop a loose dog fairly fast.

I carry a chain leasha dn bear spray. I'm gonna get an airhorn too. It's really depends on the situation which one I take. The chain leash looks harmless but can be used as defense if needed and to restrain the other dog until the owner gets there.

Not sure about the taser...sounds a little dangerous to me. I own one but would not use it unless it is a large dog and it is wanting a fight.

I have gotten in the middle before when i knew the dog. it was scarey because Sasha has serious leash aggression and it was our neighbors 9 lb furry little ball of energy and Sasha hates those dogs!SHe always goes for their fluffy tails. I jumped in between Sasha and the dog with Hemi who loves little dogs. Worst he's gonna do is smush them with his paw. lol! It was a good diversion for Nick to be able to get Sasha in the house before the puppy went running to her! They now walk their dog on a leash when Sasha is outside.

Always thought, I may need to carry pepper spray because of some bad guys that may be around. But you guys are right - need pepper spray for the dogs running lose. Actually to "protect" those fluffy little innocent not trained barking goofballs from getting eaten.

Hate the "my dog is fine and wants to play" stupid sh** - excuse my words. But it has gotten so bad with ignorant people letting their untrained dogs run. And of course I am afraid that my dog would hurt one of the little innocent ones. And sure, she would get blamed. But I also know, that there are some, that may be able to hurt my dog.

We walk less lately and do more swimming or biking. It's just so crazy with those lose dogs. But when it gets colder, we will walk more again - most of my neighbors stay inside all winter. Their dogs have to do the same.

The horn is a great idea!! Will try that!!

I don't thinik dogs hold a grudge... it's more something that will set his DA off. IMO
mine got his nose bitten by one of the 3 french bulldogs and he wasn't to happy about it, let me tell you
grabbed the lil shit and started shaking it around and I love the other owners comment after the whole incident "don't ever take your bad dog here anymore!" wtf? YOUR 3 dogs attacked mine while I warned you to keep them leashed but you didn't give a damn, but when something happens it's all about screaming at the responsible owner ?

I know that Mace is forbidden in Canada... I'll check to get the pepper spray!

lmao! both are forbidden where I live ^^ so that's unfortunately not an option...

i had a scary encounter with a loose gsd, it was while i was walking with my lil sis and my tan male. the dog stepped in front of us and wouldn't let us go on our way. when i told it to git it growled at me. i picked up my young sister and set her on the other side of chain link fence that i was next to. i shouldh've been carrying something with me since i had a five year old with me too thank god i was standing next to a fence when this happened. i ended up yelling at the dog and it ran off. couldh've provoked the dog by doin that but i was in protect mode and getting ready nut out on this dog.

This is my biggest peeve right now. There is a lady who walks her 3 lb (soaking wet) poodle up and down our street and she has never leashed the dog, which I never thought much about until I got my dogs. Well, when we first started walking the dogs, I figured she'd realize they were going to be bigger and maybe do something, but didn't say much.

Well nothing changed, so I figured I'd cross the street because surely if she walks her dog without a leash, it isn't going to cross the street right? WRONG - that little monster ran full blast across the street and of course, Zoey's ears perked up and she did a play bow, but the lady comes running and you could see the look of sheer terror on her face - really pissed me off.

And you know what she says to me? "I guess I am giving your dogs some good training"...WTF? As it is, there are parts of the neighborhood I avoid because there are always unleashed dogs in the front yard, but this is the road from my house that leads out of the neighborhood. I can't change which way I go, there is no other way short of getting in a car and driving out.

UGH - I really hate people sometimes!
