Breeding is a big decision and responsibility.
Some tips and advice? Umm... Well if you are just breeding pet dogs you should consider spaying and neutering all the pups before you place them. Do you have homes lining up? Are you prepared to keep any of the pups until the get placed or will you get sick of having multiple puppies causing chaos? |

Thanks guys. I am certainly breeding to better. I have 4 pits now (2 of which are fixed) and am already have many wanting from my litter. They all adore my dogs and if they could have them, they'd take them. I am a very proud owner of pits and will only put these pups to responsible owners who I feel will take good care and make the best decisions for them as well. I proudly represent the breeds everywhere I go and have changed MANY peoples opinions of the breed by just sharing my dogs with them.
I also appreciate the warnings : ![]() as I am sure theres nothing easy and too fun about it! How about some suggestions or good thoughts?? |

How about some pics of these two breed worthy APBT. Lets see what your stock looks like.
![]() Also, do you do anything with your guys? Weight pulling, show ring, agility, protection, dock jumping, hog hunting?? Im curious what makes them worthy of breeding to you. ![]() Im a bit touchy when people come on here and start talking about breeding. BUT, if you can prove your pooches are worthy of reproduction, then Im all for it. ![]() |

Bad sign # 1 = "I 'think' they will make beautiful pups etc. etc.... - the pounds, newspapers, the general public minds and gravesites and dumpsters are full of such puppies.
Bad sign # 2 = the male dog is only 1 year old. Way too young. Bad sign # 3 - no mention of "why" you want to breed these dogs or if you did mention something it is not a good enough reason. Do these dogs have any titles? Do they meet conformation standards? Do they meet working standards (weight-pull, hog-hunting, field trials etc. etc.)??? Leave the breeding up to the folks who have been doing it? Bad sign # 4 = Do you have a mentor? I doubt it but if so, what do they think of this? Do the breed a favor and please do not do it. I'm being nice as I am sure some folks on here are gonna rip-you-a-new-asshole about this because we've all seen it and it has helped to bring this breed down = overbreeding because your dogs are "beautiful"... |

Since you don't seem to understand, people are not posting the 'bang head' smiley b/c puppies are tough or a lot of work ... they are posting it because they are frustrated the number of people who just want to breed their dogs b/c they have 'good looking' or 'well-behaved' dogs. There are beautiful and well-mannered pit bulls dying by the THOUSANDS everyday in shelters that came from people who bred for the same reasons you are. I'm sorry, but that's just the reality. |

Do these two dogs have papers? What is the objective of pairing these two? Are they both exceptional dogs in Agility, Obedience Training, Show Dogs or something? How much do you know about their backgroud...ie parents, grandparents and down the line? There are so many things you need to know about before you decide to breed.
It is sad, but many if not most of the unwanted dogs at shelters...euthanized by Animal Control...strays running the streets...and more, come from people who do care about the breed and thier dogs but do not realize ALL the repricussions from just one "not very well thought out" breeding. |

If your here asking then IMHO your not ready to breed anything. Just because your dogs seem to be great up front you always have to look further back in the pedigree to see what flaws were there. Most pups do not inherit the parents traits but rather get traits further back in the ped.
As previously asked what have your dogs done to prove thier worthy of being bred ? What titles do they currently have ? I will assume none because your dogs are rather young, maybe your female might have titles but your male doesn't so why was he chosen when clearly he is not ready nor has he proven his worth to pass his lineage onto future dogs. All your doing is adding to the over population problem, we have enough Back Yard Breeders that the breed doesn't need anymore. Honestly I can log onto Craiglist or go to the pound and find many of the same quality dogs that your about ready to try and produce. So what is going to make your dogs more worthy of a home than the ones that are currently on the ground by other BYB's ? If you really want to better the breed try titling your dogs first, after they have proven to be worthy then and only then should you venture down the road of breeding, anything short of that you are part of the problem and not the solution. |

I really could care less about all the people wanting one of your dogs. I am only concerned about the breed and the breed needs a BREAK right now. Carla |

Besides that the male isn't fully mature, you do not seem to be at all prepared if you have top ask for advice as others have already said.
Most of us here are not against breeding, however, are against irresponsible breeding. The best advice I can give you is: - wait at least a couple of more years before even thinking about it - let the male fully mature - do research and a lot of it on the dog's pedigrees - go to shows and working events - talk to your vet and consider doing some health testing - read the many many threads on responsible breeding and also things that can go wrong that are tight here on the forum. - learn the standard inside and out and see if your dogs even fit it - save up money because if the female happens to need a c-sec or other complications arose you can be looking at thousands in vet bills Those are just a few things.... Breeding is not to be taken lightly and shouldn't be just putting any old pet quality dogs together... |

Personaly i suggest you to spay and neuter. Here's why if you have to ask these questions. Not likely you have stock that is worth breeding, if you had stock that is worth breeding your breeder, the one that you purchased or recieved your dogs from would be more inclined to guide you threw the process of breeding. Anyone can throw two dogs together and have a litter pups.
Here is one important detail that you may not be thinking about. legistlation! Does this affect you and your animals? Will legistlation affect you and any animal that you produce in the next couple years? Are you prepared to take back any animals at any point, that you are responsible for producing? |
